The electric lights of the Rosa had juat been turned on, and the boat was looking its best when a throng of ladies and gentle men accompanied by a minister passed into the ladies’ tabiii to th«- amuxement of Capt. The bride is one of the belles of Osceola, and the groom ia connected with ti e government operations in the river near that plsce.-- [Memphis Appcal- Avalanche, Jan. 2nd., )BV2- Filling the Gaps. Christmas Eve, the Baptist church presented a magnificent sight. A Chiinnay had been improvised, and Santa Claus was there! The little folks were put through a programme of music and song, after which their little heaits were msde to swell with sadness and disappointment, as the I prettiest snd finer present* were dis-1 । tributed among the overgrown babies of the audience. It was afterward! explained, that the best presents' were given the grown folks as re- j > wards for their polite attention and • geed behavior during the evening , Christmas day was observed, pret ; ty much aa it has been for the past 1 twenty years in Osceola; the older ■ people, those who have leached that time of life when the pop of a fire cracker has lost its charm, spent the ( dsy around their own fire-sides, or with friends and relatives, discussing ’ Christmas aa it used to be when they ( were boys snd girls together. On r the streets, the usual mob of mixed humanity collected and when all had been eerved with a morning drink, the proprietors of the saloons closed up, and spent the rest of the dav with their families. Did we say aii ( closed up? That’s a mistake. Bur , lers saloon was kept running al) day. [ where several scraps occurred; fu | ing mid quarreling, cursing swearing were the leading ba । of this establishment during ri. and people shuuned it, In t around the square. Laie in tin: ev , etiiug, three pistol shots rang out . । elMr and distinct, and with the . echoe* went out the report “George -1 7 illrnan was shot by Nick Summer*, Jin Butler's Saloon.” To many it waa I “tidings of great, joy” not of * Sav ( ior born, but a “bad negro dead.” The Coroners jury, which sat on the case in the small hours of the night returned a verdict of jus tifiable homicide. Nobody to blam*! Ah! is this the final decree! Is there to be no reward —no punishment. No dryin g away the tears of a heart broken mother and father, wholie beardlea* boy was led to stain his young hand* in the blood of a fellow mortal, through the it Huenoe of strong drink, snd those who deal in it? And what of George Tillman; who, rendered crazy with drink, and with mnrder-iii his heart, at the mo ment Lia light was extinguished? will he, n, the weakness of hia intel lect, be held responsible for the part he played in this horrible tragedy; who oan anawar? But if Christmas day had a sad ending for some, others enjoyed it to the full. Pnrti-'S, sociables, en tertsinments snd balls foil we I one another every evening during the entire week. Among those whose home* were thrown open to the young people were Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Driver, Mrs W. P Hah-; Mr. and Mr*. Jas. D. Driver; Capt. and Mrs S. S. Semmes; Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
