Judge W. H. L'ate of Jonesboro,
well known to our people, died at
Toledo, 0., where he had gone in
the hope of being restored to
health, on the 24th tilt. His re
mains were brought hdme, Jones
horo, where the entire population
turned out to do honor to his name
and pay the last tribute of respect
and effection to his memory. Kevs.
J. D. (’. Cobb and J. F. Jernigan
conducted the services.
In our last issue, we were led tp
making a statement in reference
to the court house indebtedness,
which is not true, ami hasten to
jnake acknowledgement and correc
tion. The annual report from the
clerks office contained the item.
To amount Theodore Reed judg
ment. with interest to March 21st
1893, $26,662,26.” While this
amount due Mr. Reed is correct,
only about S3OOO. is on the Court
house debt; the balance being
county scrip, bought and held by
him, which was secured about the
time of Sheriff Haskin’s admistra-
A
non.
In this connection we would
state that the annual report shows
the County finances in a fair con
dition. The receipts for the past
vear from all sources were $lB,-
33. while the expenditures,
amount to only $11,324.89, leaving
a balance in favor of the county,
aud to be deducted from the total
indebtedness of, $7,513.44. At
this rate, the county will soon be
out of debt, and her finance* be
{Hit on a cash basis. We are now
doing very well, and can’t afford
to monkey with “court house
movals,” “new court house,” or
any other visionary schemes from
any source.
Although the state election is
over twelve months away in the
future, six candidates for the
gubernatorial stool are out wrang
ling and beating the mid-summer
air, with the almost certain pos
sibility that when the time does
home for a selection they will all
he “dead corpuses.” Their names
tire: Judge E. E. Bryant of Fort
Smith, Col. John G. Fletcher of
Little Kock, Attorney General Jeff
Davis of Russelville, Hon. J. E.
Wood of Marianna, Col. E. W.
Rector of Hot Springs, and Hon.
A. F. Vandeventer of Morrilton.
You are right Mr. Hyphen.
The editor of the Times makes no
pretentions to ever having been a
“globetrotter.” But he does lay
. claim to very definite and accurate
knowledge of North-east Arkansas,
and if you will come down we will
i^ ve U some eBBOns the
of your state.
EDUCATION PAYS.
College men are holding responsible
poaitjops everywhere. Hendrix Col
leoe semis out men who succeed.
Only a few boys from a county are ex
pected, because the requirements are
high and few boys are prepared tor
college. Those who are prepared find
It best to enter a genuine college where
faculty, library, and laboratory gives
the best returns, and association with
mature students is peculiarly helpful.
Teachers looking to highschool work
Should train at Hendrix. Expenses
moderate. Term begins sept. 27. If
you are interested in higher education
send for catalogue and write freely to
