C. Luker were 1 standing in front of Russell's | store on Main street, a J'oung! follow on a small black mule, sad dlclcss, and almost bridieless, rode up to the rack and was about to dismount, when the officers above named with quick preccp tiou noticed that he was a suspi cious looking character and car ried a six-shooter slung uround his body. In the twinkling of un eye, a six shooter, in the hands of the officers, was brought to bear on him on either side, and he was informed that the laws of Arkan sas did not permit the perambu lation of traveling armories, and moreover that they (the officers) knew him and wanted him any how. I Taken completely- by surprise l>y the quickness and keen preemp tion of the officers, the young vil lain could do nothing but. surren der and shuck off his six shooter. By this time a crowd had gath ered around and the youngster was recognized by Dr. W. H. Hill and others as one John Litten, a notorious young horse thief, who some four or live weeks ago had stolen a horse down about Little Hock, and been pursued through this place. Without further cer emony the young scamp was lock ed up in the calaboose, where lie had remained but about an hour, until Mr. Jno. Young and Dep’ty Marshal Basey arrived in town from Dover, making inquiry for him and the mule he rode to town, which it seems he had stolen from a farmer over in Newton or Boone county. Mule and thief were soon on their way to Dover, where the mule was turned over to the owner, who had followed him that far, and the thief to sheritf Petty, who will take good care of him until he is dealt with according to law. This same Litten, wc under stand, was sent to the penitentiaiy two years ago from this county for assault with intent to kill on a negro down about Gaila Rock. M essrs. Luker and Quinn de serve much credit for quick pre ception and promptness displayed in the capture of this notorious character. The Editorial Excursion. Last Saturday, in accordance with previous notice, brought the; editorial excursionists—about fif- j ity in numoer. i» e nau calcula ted upon joining tiie excursion at this point but were prohibited by circumstances beyond our control. We know we missed a good time, and what we regretted more we missed making the acquaintance of our visiting brother quill-driv ers. We had the pleasure, how ever, of meeting them for a few moments at the depot as they re turned and became acquainted with several. We trust all enjoy ed their visit to our state and their run up our way and that they may be returned in safety to their respective homes. In this connection, we must tender our thanks to the gentle nanly, clever and efficient Sup’t if the Ft. Smith road—Mr. Theo. Hartman—for a kind and cordial nvitation to join the excursion. _ •» Damp Meeting at Gravel Hill.
