Mr. EniTon: 1 fonrnril you for publication in the Watchman, wliicli I am glad to say has, for ti long time, consulted the interests of the farmer, by devoting a portion of its columns to the imports nt subject ol Agriculture, a commnn ication on the uso of Teat and Clay, by thoso who till the soil. It was written by 0. 11 War ing Jr., a pupil of Professor Mnpcs. This young genttcman lias recently delivered an ablo and in teresting course of Lectures on the importance, to fanners, and to our country, of intelligent, scientific, practical, and profitable farming. H was my good fnrtuno to attend Uie course. I had only to regret that so few of the fanners, in tho Legislature and in this vicinity, found it con venient to attend. Will you confer on your ag ricullural readers, the favor of giving them the substance of one of his lectures, in tho follow ing communication, copied from tho Norlhorn Farmer, Utica N. Y. Perhaps, in justice to Mr. Waring, I should say, that at tho close of liis lectures at Washington Hall, in Montpclicr, it was unanimously resolved, on motion of Gen. Walton, that tho thanks of the audience bo ac corded to Mr. Waring, for his able, interesting, practical and instructive Lectures. A LisTC.Nr.n. The ubc of Peat and Clay In Ag riculturo. ur O. E. WAIU.NQ JR. While the Agricultural Press is engaged in the discussion of subjects of minor im portance to the practical farmer, they should not forget those subjects which from their self-evident nature are admitted by all, and the use of uliicli is undoubtedly nf the first importance in the cultivation of land. A mo np these subjects there is nono more worthy of careful consideration than that now before us. Tho chief value of Peat and Clay as ap plications tn the soil, depends not on their similarity of constitution with the plant, but on their power to absorb fertilising gases, retaining them against the solvent in- iiuence of water, and yielding them to the necessities of grontli. l'cat thoroughly turned tn carbon, charcoal, ami clny do not in any appreciable degree, enter into tin; constitution ol plants, but remain as per manciit absorbents in the soil, always net' ing 09 forwarding agents from tho iitinos phere to tho plant. Over nine-tenths of the dry weight of nearly all cultivated vegetables is derived from water and from gases always present in the atmosphere. Of these gates tho principal one which plants must receive through their roots is ammonia. This is the source from which they obtain their nitrogen. It is well known to all in the fumes of hartshorn which is merely water saturated with ammonia the same odor must have been noticed in stables and in other places where animal matters ore un dergoing decomposition, It is naturally a vapor in f its pure state, or combined with the carbonic acid of the atmosphere, (making carbonato of ammonia,) and consequently passes into the atmosphere immediately on its formation in exposed localities. From the immense amount of animal putrefaction continually going on it must be evident that the atmosphere is imbued with it, and that 'I ammonia formed must pass away into the air, unless prevented by some means which shall hold it fast. To do this is the chief office of charcoal in all it. forms, (peats, mould, &.c.,) and of clay, which from their great powers of ab sorption will hold on U,ati immense bimiiint, and prevent its loss, or rather to prevent its distribution, for when going into the atmos phere it is Mill ready to be returned to the soil by rains, and that field which contains the best supply of absorbent materials will derive the greatest benefit from the htnmo nia, which, from the improper management of manures, lias been throw ii away by their owners. The sources of. .ammonia in tho atmos phere arc not confined to exposed manure heaps, but there h going on in all parts of the world, on laud and on the water, such on amount of animal decomposition that ammonia is furnished in immense quantities to the air, whence it is always absorbed by the water passing through it as clouds, rains, &.C, and by them eventually returned to the earth. If these waters fall on lauds not containing absorbent ingredients they carry the ammonia back to the atmosphere on their evaporation. Absorbent materials, sucli as peat and clay I lie lurins most n- Tuilablc to the former have the power of robbing this gas from the water and retain ing it during evaporation, yielding it only to the growing plant. Tho presence of ammonia in rain water accounts for the reviving clfects of a show er always shown on plants. No such effeet could bo obtained from watering with spring water, unless previously mixed with tomc form of ammonia, in which casu the same result would be the same as that from the rain. Probably the best way to test the absorb ent pmier of peat and clay is by the expen ment described by Prof. Alapes, which is tn take three barrels of pure sand, and through cue ofllioc mix a few haudfuls of charcoal, through another a little clay, leaving the third pure. Pour the brown liquor of the barn yard on the third barrel, and it will pass through unaltered. Pour it on cither of the others, and pure water will be the result of tho filtration. The fertilising gases and coloring matters, in short, all impuri ties will be retained by the absorbents, which if applied to the soil will be found to posess all or the manurial virtues of the brown liquor. If we wish to bo more accurate and prove that these substances do actually ob tain ammonia from tho atmosphere through means of rains, we have only to place a email quantity of each under a gutter spout during a shower, After drying it wc can preceive no changn from its lormer condi tion, but analysis will show it to contain am monia, and its application to the soil will show that its manurial power is increased. It is owing to this properly oftlicclayor carbon that soil has the power of abstrac ting the odor from tainted meat and similar impure articles of food, when buried in it. It is on account of the same property that a good florist will not use new flower pots. Fresh burned clay absorbs immense amounts of ammonia, and would rob the fertilising gases from the soil within the pot, preven ting its use by plants, as their roots cannot enter the spaces between the particle of clay where the ammonia is stored, rots are left exposed to rain and other atmospheric iuflueuces until saturated with gates, when they may be used without injury to the growth of the plants, II the pot gets broken it i pounded finely and put in the bottom of another one, where it absorbs ammonia Jwhicli becomes available to roots from its finer Mate of division. When applied to 1 ind, peat and clay retain all gases brought to them by rains and ar rest those arising from the decomposition ol matters in the soil. As divisors in compost, they place the manures in such a stale of di lution (if the word may be applied here) that they nrc prevented from injury by lite fang lug" From increased bulk they may bo more evenly spread on the land. Their greatest value, however, in this case, ns well as in those bclorc named, depends on their reten tion of all gases resultant from decomposi tion. These they arrest in their escape and permanently fix until the rootsof some plant shall traverse iheir pores in search ofthem. The amount of valuablo matter thus saved is much crater than would be supposed, and if any person will place a small quantity of manure tn n glass vessel, and expose it to the action of sun and rain, until more than nine-tenths of its weight begone, the fuel that '.here is no difference between fire and tic composition except that the results of the latter arc more easily retained from being more slowly formed will strike that person rather forcibly, ami ten chances to one that hu will set himself at work to save his mon ey, by the use of absorbents. Another use of these substances is to take up the fertil izing constituents of the liquid excrements of animals. The liquid manure of a cow is estimated, in Flanders, at 610 per annum. It cannot be worth less than that here. In most cases this is all lost, while the expense of saving it with peat is trifling. A very good plan is to dig out the bottom of the still to the depth of about two feet and fill this with dried peat, (muck, leaf irnuld, or other vegetable deposits) may bo used as vvnll.) It will absorb all of the liquid man ure, and the heat of tho animal while lying down at night will greatly facilitate Us de composition. When saturated, say once in two or three weeks, the muck bhoiild be re moved. Persons keeping their cattle in open yards should have never less than six inches of muck on the ground, and this should be often removed. That taken off should be composted under cover, that the soluble earthy mailers ba not washed away before applied to the soil. Peat used on light coloitd soils will, by darkening their color, render them wanner, on the same principle that makes; a black co.tt 'winner than u white one, when worn in the sun. It mellows heavy clay soils. and renders sands retentive of manure. Clay compacts light blowing sands nod thus fits them lor more profitable cultivation. It has the same power us charcoal in rendering them ictculive. Thorough attention to these two articles will he repaid in all cases with increased unci permanent profit. Both peat and clay are constant in the soil, and in their unceas ing effect in the abstraction from rain water of atmospheric fertilizers, and the retention of tire organic part of manures applied. Important to Drinkers. The following correspondence exhibits the views of one of the most eminent physician and surgeons of New York cily on tho na ture, tendencies and necessary consequen ces of Alcoholic Heverage, regarding the question primarily in its physie.nl aspect. We publish it for the benefit of whoever it may concern. Dr. Williams to Dr. Carnncliait. New YoitK.Oct. ISOa. Cahnociian, Prof. Surgery, Aic, Dr. Carnochan's Jlepli. Ni'.w York, Oct. 23, IS.Vd. Beau Sm : In relation lo tour inquiries directed lo mc, as to the physiological effects ol "alcoholic drinks, I unhesitatingly- an suerthal they are in the highest degree per nictous and physically. It belungs to i tie divine lo expose and dwell upon Ihcsotroiv till inllueuccs upon the moral constitution of man, by the use ol intoxicating liquors. As a surgeon, however, having vast oppurtuui ties ol experience, in hospital and private practice, I must declare that 1 always look upon patients who havo been in the habitol using spirituous beverages as least likely to recover from serious maladies, or from the shock following capital operations; and also as those most likely lo enquire longer time for tho cure of disease of a more simple character, 1 have at times met Willi case:, of fracture of the bones occurring in persons of intemperate habits, in whom the bones would not unite by bony material, but re mained flexible and useless on account of the union being ligamentous. IJi-sulu des troying the recuperative action of the sys tem, the use of spirits lavs the foundation of many diseases, which in. first only disa bling men from pursuing tho vocations of life, ultimately induce imbecility, paralysis, apoplexy, and death. It would be impossi ble in a communication, short as this must necessarily be, lo mention all the untoward results which the use of spirituous beverages entail upon humanity, and how these results impede and counteract the efforts of the medical practitioner. Suffice it to say, that the continued use of intoxicating drinks sops the foundation of lile, destroying Um healthy action of the nervous systAn, pre venting the nutritive powers of the stomach from filling their natural office, viluting ihu blood, and depressing the vital functions of the whole system. To conclude, I would say that intemper ance initio use of alcoholic drinks is tho great pest of modern society, and those who have the moral courage lo Maud boldly for ward in the cause of tiro grand moral reform which is now agitating the country on this all-iiiiportont subject, will merit the enco miums of all mankind.
