Bur lington I'ress. WASHINGTON COUNTY. Walton's Daily givcs an account of a homicide, or somethiug worse. at Montpe lier: At about midnight of Wcduesday. April 24th. Patriek Gibbous, a youug Irishman of about 40 years, was killed by a stab. There had been a dance at Vil lage Hall, at which Gibbous and other Irishnien were present looking on. Two Irishmen living here. and three young meu from abroad left the hall about mid night when Gihbons seized a chair and followed them down atatc Street to the space between the American Ilouse and D.Dewey & Co.'s store, where, within perhaps live minutes aitcr leaving the hall Gibbous was killed. An invetigation is now being made,so werefraiu from giving the rumors of the strect, except the well authcnticatcd one. to wit, that the Irish men had drank enough to make them ugly. This is the third death by violcnce in Montpelier since the settlement of the town. aid liquor was the cause in each instance. The tirst )ersou killed was a negro at the old taveru staud, long since removed, known as the Eaton tavern. The other two victims were Irishmen, Conigan and Gibbons. Gibbous lelt a family. In a late date, Walton's paper modiiies and adds to its former statemcnt : The name of the man killed on Wedncday night was Patriek Fitzgibbon, au employe on the railroad, residiug near this villagc. It is remarkable that his father was sud dcnly killed, on the Central railroad. at Sandusky statiou. The examination of Mr. F.'s body showed a stab, clearthrough the heart and touching the liver. A siugle blow donbtless resulted in instant death. Up to the time of writing this, the examin ation ot every body, likely to throw Iiht upon the aflair, has been so far private that ouly a few have been admitted. It is piobable that suflicient will be elicited to warrant a public examination, wheu, of coursc, the faets developed will be made known. We suspect that two theo ries prevail outsideof the examining mag istrates, which are that Fitzgibbon was killed in self-defense by some one he assail ed with the chair; or,thatin the darknes3, he was killed tbrough mistake by one of his friends. The bodv was found bv the side ot the chair. On Saturday public ex amination ofoiie of the three young men was commcnced with a view of determin ing whether he shall be held to appear at the County Court. Five person-i only left the hall a few minutes prcceding the kill ing of Fitzgibbon. Three of these were strangers, agents of Boston and Xew York houscs. They say that they re monstrated with the two Irishman, when. to avoid a disturbance, in the hall. the three young men left, and the two Irish men followed them Patriek Fitzgibbon aud Martin Costello, a brother-in-law of Fitzgibbon. The medical testimony was that the wound was inflicted with a two edged dirk, and that death must have been nearly Instantaueous. The Freeman, received later, gives this version of the aflair: Tliere was a dance at Village LTall Wednesday evening, Three young men actiug agents for city merchants viz: Chas. A. G. Swasey, YV. G. Chapmau and Edward Wasserboehr were in town and were present at the uanee as spectators. Between eleven aud twelve o'elock, two Irishmen, Fatrick Fitzgibbou and Martin CosteUo his broth- er-iu-law, who were the worse for liquor, came mto tne nait and took seatsnear Mr. fawasey anu lus iriends. Fitzgibbon and Costello made some louu talk. and Mr. Swasey tried to quiet them. Tliis natu rally made them more noisy, aud Fitz gibbon threatened to " lick " Swasey when. for the purpose of gettiug him out of the hall, Swasey told him to come out doors and fight if he wauted to. Swasey Wasserboehr and Chapman then left the hall and the Irishmen tollowed, Swasey taking a chair which he threw at the Irishmen as they were coming down the steps. Swasey and his two comrades then ran towards thc Pavilion, followed by Fitzgibbon with the chajfc and Costello Wasserboehr and Chapman rcached the Pavilion without trdnble, bnt Swasey was overtaken near Mr. Dewey"s store by the Irishman with the chair, aud fell, the Irisbman falling over him. He then got up and ran between the American House and Mr. Dewey's store. Immediately af tersvard Fitzgibbon caught somo one be tween the 6tore and hotel, saying, Now. my boy, I've got you," and was stabbed by the persou whom he caught, the knife piercing his heart and killing him instant ly. About the same time Costello ex claimed, " Patsey, are ye dead," and screamed "inurder" severai times. Was serboebr and Chapmanhad heard the cry of murder, and were alarmed for Swasey, who had not appeared, and they returned to the hall aud inquired for him. Shortly aftcrwards Swasey eame to the Pavilion without his cap, and with his clothes and facc muddy. His account of himself dur ing this. interval was, that he had been hid under a shed in the rear of Mr. Dewey's store, and had come out as soon as he dared to, but that he kuew nothing of the homicide. Costello told a coufused story at the inquesr. Swasey was examined and discharged, aud Costello wgs held for trial, on the sup positiou that he stabbed his brother-in-law, thinkiug it was Swasey. It is a bad aflair, and but for rum would uot have oc curred. Rev.
