whilo tho Rochester, which had found it
diflicult to get to us and tho Express,
which had now come np, were gradually

pastsceniing liko a terrible drcnm, I am
npproaching thc city. It can acarccly

or lost by the wrcck of thc Swallow. Thc
probabilhty now is that a great many Iivcs
have bccn lost, but how many no onc can
tcll. Therc appcnrs to havc bccn ovcr
thrcc hundrcd passengers on board the
vcsscl. Those who wcro on the forwnrd
part of thc boat wcro saved, ofcourse, as
tliey could makc their cscapc to thcsliorc;
hut many ol tiic passengers iu thc stcru
must havc been drowncd.
