HEARD OWN BURIAL SERVICE Dying Millionaire Had What Might Be Called a "Rehearsal" in His Bedroom. When Mr. Parker Mason, a shrewd and level-headed millionaire of the United States, was on the point of dying a few years ago he conceived the quaint idea of having a rehearsal of his own funeral service in his bed room. He called in a Presbyterian minister, and a few members of the church choir, and the full service was rehearsed In his presence and that of his family and a number of his friends. The clergyman preached an eloquent and touching sermon on the virtues and charities of the dying man, and the choir sang appropriate hymns. At the conclusion of the service, which the millionaire had followed with the closest interest and attention, he warm ly complimented both clergyman and choir on their performance, and after dismissing them sent for an under taker and made the necessary arrange ment's with him and had a personal in terview with thi pall-bearers. He died ten hours later, and was buried with the same service to which lie had lis tened when alive. Montreal Herald. Where the Fault Lay. As the Irish police recruit strolled along on his first turn of night duty, loud yells of "Fire" rent the air. He bolted quickly to the spot, and found a house well alight, with a man half hanging out of an upstairs window. "Help! Help!" he yelled. "If I jump, will you catch me?" "Sure, an Ol will!" replied the po liceman readily. So the man jumped, only to crash to the ground and He there stunned. When, a few minutes later, he recov ered consciousness, he looked up at the constable reproachfully, and mur mured feebly: "I thought you said you could catch me?" "Begorrah!" replied the Irishman. One of the Inventions of the great war was the art of shooting a machine gun through the propeller of an air plane without danger of hitting the propeller blades. The French aviator, Itoland durros, was reported to be the first man to employ this device, which was used by hundreds of air fighters throughout the war. Before that time the machine gun was mounted above the aviator so as to fire over the propeller blades. Ma chine guns may also be mounted In a revolving turret or In the rear of the airplane. The Browning machine gun will fire 20.000 shots at the rate of 000 per minute. State Valuation of Vermont Bank Stocks -AND WIIY- Pottery-Maklng Simplified. WATERMAN Craduate Nurse Phone 2-21 Wiuu. I'.., -A A recent issue of the Morrisville Messenger made an er ror unitentional, of course in giving the State valuation of the stock of the Lamoille County Savings Bank and Trust Com pany at $50.00 per share, when as a matter of fact, the valu ation was $220.00 per share. This erroneous statement of the Messenger purely unin tentional affords an excellent opportunity to place before prospective depositors a fact as to the exceptional strength of the Hyde Park Institution. The managers of the Lamfoille County Savings Bank and Trust Co. feel that they have great reason to be proud of the standing of the Hyde Park Bank, because with only three ex ceptions and those banks have been in business many years longer than the Hyde Park Bank NO BANK IN THE STATE RANKS AS HIGH, ACCORDING TO THE VALUATIONS PLACED UPON ITS STOCK BY THE STATE OFFICIALS AP POINTED TO MAKE THE APPRAISALS, AS THE HYDE PARK BANK. What is there in state valuation of bank stocks that is of interest to depositors? We know of no bank in Vermont today that is not respon sible, but the depositor generally makes a deposit 'with the ex pectation that it will remain in the bank for years and he may properly ask: "Is the bank where I think of making my deposit exceptionally strong? Are its affairs conducted by men who make 'safety first' their guiding principle and motto?" What is there in the State appraisal of bank stocks which evidences the comparative strength and stability of the differ ent banks? Under the laws of Vermont the State Bank Examiner is called upon to make a rigid investigation of the affairs of each bank twice each year, not only to assertain its strength, but in cidentally to decide upon the valuation at which the stock of the bank should be placed in the grand list. If the Bank Examiner finds that the mcv.agers are reck less; are careless in making their investments; u he finds that the managers of the banks are speculators or gamblers or that they are unfit to manage and control the savings of their de positors, then the depositor naturally looks further and says: "It is my duty to place my savings not simply with a good bank, but with the safest and best bank of my acquaintance." The State Bank Examiner, the State Treasurer and the State Tax Commissioner constitute the State Board of Apprais al. They decide, as to the solidity and strength of the bank and especially as to its surplus and the character of its assets and having taken into account all these facts, they place a' val uation upon the stocks of all the banks in the State and only three have been found by that Board to be entitled to a higher valuation than the Hyde Park Bank. This can mean but one thing and that is that in the esdma tion of the State Board of Appraisal, the Hyde Park Bank stands for fidelity, for stability, for safety and for conservatism If in the opinion of the reader, the foregoing facts prompt the selection of the Hyde Park Bank as a place of deposit for a portion of his savings, that Bank will welcome both additions to his former acco'unts and the opening of new accounts.
