; A I-REXCHMAN' VIEW Let not the tbe South delude herself. Her soldiers arc brave, he diplomatists adroit She is keeping back the cotton of which Europe has a pressing need, she is flattering certain political jealousies by predicting the approaching dismember ment of the United States : bul notwith standing all chances in her favoi, the South will bo deceived in the object of her ambition. It is possible that weary of the war, tbe North may submit to the sepa ration of some of the states between the Alkghanies and the Bca ; but the new Roman empire which was to extend as far as Mexico, the new civilization founded on slavery, all this is,but a dream which is even now vanishing, a bubble which will burst in the first breeze. To succeed, the South must have the help of Europe, and this help she will not have. What ever may be the sufferings of the man ufacturing classes, and whatever the scheme of diplomatists, there is one fact which towers above everything else, and that is slavery. Victory for the North is the redemption of four millions of men but triumph for the South is the per petuation and extension of slavery, with all its miseries and all its infamies. This is the feeling of Europe, and the knowl edge of this feeling will hold back more than one government. The multitude, whom great politicians despise but dare not defy, the fanatics who believe in the gospel, the narrow minds whose concep tions do not soar abovo liberty, the silly hearts that melt at the recital of the suf ferings of an unknown negro, and all that mass of sentimental people who throw in to the balance their love of right and of humanity, these laws get the better in the end. The world belongs to those ig norant beings who care not a straw for political combinations, and who set jus and charity high above their own inter ests. Frenchmen, is it possible that the cause of slavery ever should become popular with as? Our fathers once fought in America with Lafayette and Eochambcau to uphold freedom there. This is a part of our national glory, and it is the ser vice then rendered the United States which has caused us to be regarded in that country aa brothers and friends. Shall we obliterate the memorable past ? Shall the name of France be associated with the triumph of the South, that is, whatever we may do or say, with the end less perpetuity of slavery '? It is impos sible. France, we are told, never fights for a selfish interest, but always for an idea. I accept this proud motto, and 1 now ask, if we give help to the South, what idea shall we bo fighting for. La houlago. Ship Island Contrabands. The "contra bands" continue to come into our lines ; certainly I have many of them here, and have procured good places for many more on ships of war and merchantmen. 1 have four as my own servants, and found them ready, intelligent, capable and use ful. One of them was house servant to a wealthy widow: lie helps my cook, has the solo care of my table, and waits at it with a grace and scadincss that I have never seen excelled. He is a yellow "boy," say twenty-five years-old. I have another as black as ebony, upright in his carriage, finely formed, and lithe as a leop ard. He came from Mobile, by land, to Biloxi, twelve miles from here; there got a little "dugout," about ten feet long (a canoe made of a log hollowed only large enough for one person.) In the night he put off, and in the fresh brezce was over set twice in the dark. He lost his oars, and, after a long struggle, succeeded in getting the water out of his canoe and paddling with his hands. In tho morn ing he was seen two or three miles from the shore, and a boat was sent to pick him up. When he came he had nothing on but shirt and pants no hat nor shoes. All were lost, and ho was thoroughly drenched and weary. He had been a long time in tho rebel army, and was at tho battle of Corinth. An Englishman, Scotchman, or American striving in such fashion for liberty would be a hero ; bu1 he is only a nigger, and deserves only a "walloping." Need Dow. , Cavalry at Derby Line. Over fifty men being more than the quota called for from Orleans have been recruited at Derby Lino for the new company of Cav airy. They have been sent on to Burling ton. Messrs. Allen and Chase havo hown great energy and activity and been very successful in raising men. Recruit ' ing has not been so successful in the wes tern counties and the company still lacks a few men. T hero will bo a chance a few days longer to enlist at Dorby Line. StawlarJ , TUG IKO 1)1 u i: CORN SHELLER! J. B. BAND'S PATENT. Patented August 13th, 18G1. In presenting this new invention to the agri culturists of our country, but little need be mud to convince any intelligent man that this is the best machine for shelling Corn that has ever been in nse, for several reasons : 1st. It shells all the kornels from the cob. 2d. It shells with great rapidity. 3d. There is a less number of pieces consti tuting the machine, consequently less liable to get out of order, and it costs less than any other Shelter in use which is suitable to shell corn with. Below are a few names of Farmers and others who have seen this machine, and have expressed themselves satisfied that it is the best and really tbe cheapest machine in the market. E. E.
