THE VÄUBY FARMER-DEVOTED TO THE MEREST OF PARMBRS, filfiCMAHiGS, UND WORKING MEN.
VALLEY FARMER.
AB LEY INSTEAD OF OATS.
Id No. 3 of our present volume,
we published a communication
from a correspondent, in which
the writer asserts his confidence
that be can grow s many bush
els of barley per acre as of oats"
the one 4& lbs, the other 32
Iba.
Hiring abandoned the cultiva
tion of barley for many years
peat, we were unable to judge of
Iba correctness of the assertion,
bat it struck as at the time as
being worthy of further notice
and further trial. That bright
barley straw is superior to all oth
er straw for stock, and perhaps
nearly equal to good hay, we
have Kite doubt; and if 48 lbs. of
pain can be grown cr,i the same
amount, of ground which would
produce bat 32 of oats, we wo'd
at oaee abaudon the cultivation
ef the latter und take to the for
mer. We incline to think the
wetter is stilt in error: yet there
can be little doubt but it less oats
were grown, and more barley, wc

are universally ndmittca to im;
a great exhauster of tho soil, and ;
have so long cropped oar poor
lands with it, that a ohnngo isnb-
aolutily desireablo. Barley is no
great impoverisher of tho soil, and
leaves the ground in a fi no mel
low condition for wheat. Th
grain, whan ground, is, in our
opinion, superior to corn, oats or
any other grain. Mixed with cut
hy,italks or somothing of the
kind, stock greatly relish ir, and
readily fatten on it
Wür not our friends givo tho
subject a little attention, and sow
a few acres of barley the coming
spring! if it i only for experi
ment? Our word for it, their
parses will be none the lighter,
and their stock none the poorer
next spring in consequence.
The mode of cultivation is, or
was when we helped our father to
raise it, similar to that of oats.
It, however, only requires about
two-thirds as much seed por acre.
Like qnts. it spoils easily by heat
ion. and on this account shoulil i
MVtr be stored away in a green'
or damp stnto. Tho straw of
spring barley is mostly too short
for binding. In our boyhood
diyi it was cradled, raked' into 1
largo bunchoe, thrown on tho tho dung bo in food heating con-
wsgon with a "barley fork," and dition, cover it bix or eight inch

There are but few farmers who
re not aware that it sometimes
happens that seed corn, or a large
proportion of it fails to germi
nate, having in some way lost its
vltslity. The cause which pro
duces this remark;. bio result, is
but vaguely understood, but it is
generally believed to bo in somo
way com looted with the cold .of
tho preceding win tor. It does
not seem probable that tho vitali
ty of corn. like poach buds, is al
ways destroyed whon tho mercury
sinks lower than n given temper
ature, but other causes doubtless
have something to do in the m It
ter. We should not think it
straoge that corn which had not
boon thoroughly dried out before
tho occurrence of the extremely
oold weather should tail to grow,
bot further than this, we shall
not pursue the subject nt present.
It is a safe and economical plan
which some farmers dopt of test
ing their stod corn every spring
before planting time comes, by
potting some ot it to sprout. In
this wny, if any portion of the
seed, or all of it. has lost its vi
tality, the fact is asceitaincd be
fore it is planted, and thus a vast
amount of perplexity, labor, time
ml moans is sveidsd.
Ihs spring of 1862, (if our
memory is not at fmlt.) will lon
no remombcred among corn-grow-srs.
Hundreds, perhaps thous
ands of sores in our own country
bad tobe rsplantod, the seed, in
many instance?, having been to
tally worthless, and in far more
so little grew that it was best to
remark the ground. In order to
bo prepared for a like emergency
in future, every farmer should pu t
some of his seed corn to sprout,
in order to ascertain, before the
tim arrives, whether it will grow
And as the past winter has boon
unprecedentedly oold, it is high
ly necessary that this be attend
ed to the present spring. Let
oa bo sure that we plant good
seed. I tut. Farm.

The plant should bo cut down

in a thrifty condition; tho second
season they may he cut down

spring cut them down within two

they grow out agnin, (say two
