Y. REPUBLICANS DON'T WANT STRONG PARTY IN THE SOUTH BY A WHITE SOUTHERN EDITOR Obviously Republicans are making a strong bid for the Negro vote in northern states, Gov. Dewey’s record is not too good on issues which are vital to the Negro, but the Chicago platform, on which he presumably stands is more specific and more favorable than the Democratic platform. In brief, it appears that Negroes should decide upon the basis of what the respective candidates say during the campaign before voting in November. Negroes, and all other minorities, should also be sure they hit one or the other parties so hard in November that they’ll know they have been hurt. Minorities, and especially the Negro, do not owe either party anything. However, before going to the polls Negroes should consider a few facts.: All of the things mentioned below are true, and can be verified by any clever and impartial investigator. They' include: The Republican party has been in power, with some brief exceptions, almost continuously since the War Between the States. During all these years there has been no sincere effort to build a real Republican party in the deep south. Goodness knows there is almost nothing complimentary to say about Southern “Democrats,” however, it is obvious that the Negro has received more benefits during the Roosevelt regime than dur ing all the years since the Emancipatin proclamation. About the only visible results of Negro loyalty to the Republicans is appointment of Negro city mail carriers and the sending of money to buy up delegates for G.O.P. candidates for President. (Needless to say, this money never reached the poor people no more than Democratic pre convention money ever reaches the rank and file.) If the G.O.P. has ever made any serious effort to see that the Negro and other underdogs in the south secured the ballot, his effort was so secre tive that not even the Southern Negro knows anything about it. As for the record of Southern Democrats in this matter, all there is to say has already been said. Furthermore, it is too indecent to discuss in “mixed company.” The only time Republicans have carried any southern states in a na tional election (in many years) was 1928, when the Hoovercrats went to and fro, whispering that the pope had already packed up and was ready to catch the first boat for America, and move into the White House along with Al Smith. Republicans have seldom had any effective help at election time from southern whites and one wonders why they’ve never made any real effort to build up a party in the south by doing something worthwhile for poor whites and.Negroes. Furthermore, Republicans have never hesitated to use, and encourage the use of the Negro as a whipping boy when they felt there was the slightest chance to get some electoral votes in the solid south. For instance, a day or so before the G.O.P. national convention met, i southern newspaper editors received a pamphlet captioned in black-face type: “The Only Sure Way to Abolish the Fair Employment Practices I Committee.” Perusal of the folder disclosed that it said, in language i which Herr Goebbels would envy, that the sure way was to elect John W. Bricker, president. (Even non-gamblers would be safe in wagering that this folder was not sent to editors of Negro newspapers). Other items, indicative of the difference between G.O.P. tactics in the north and south include: Down here the people who say they are Republicans are the same peo ple who most violently oppose Negroes, Jews and other “furriners.” With few exceptions, it is the FDR-haters W’ho incessantly lambast the mi norities. One could go on for pages like this, but it’s unnecessary. And, do not forget that Eugene Talmadge and Thomas Linder, two of the most anti-social men in the south, held conferences with Republican leaders during (or just before) the Chicago convention. A Chicago news paper quoted the Georgia ex-governor as saying that the only friends he had now wre Republicans and Talmadge has never denied the state ment. This is not a defense of the Democratic party it is simply a few facts about the record of the G.O.P. in the south. (It would require a more ingenious mind than the writer possesses to think of anything nice to say about Southern Democrats.) Meanwhile liberals, (radicals, Communists, reds, anarchists, or what ever the status quo boys wish to call those who believe in the simple doctrine of the brotherhood of mankind as taught by Jesus), must decide between Dewey and Roosevelt in November.
