WASHINGTON POST DROPS AAU SPONSORSHIP OF BOXING MATCHES By Al Sweeney WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (ANP) —The reactionary District of Co lumbia chapter of the Amateur Ath letic union took a terrific jolt this week as the Washington Post, liber al morning daily, announced on its sport pages that they were dropping the sponsorship of the District AAU boxing tournament “in the in terest of tolerance.” Although Dan Ferris, national secretary of the AAU, has told the PRESCRIPTIONS FAITHFULLY COMPOUNDED You can depend upon Thrifty Pharmacists to compound your doctor's prescription exactly as it is written. The district i AAU, however, chooses to bar col |ored amateur championships be cause of what it chooses to call its ■duty to ‘Washington’s social phi i losophy.’ “The Washington Post also finds itself with a choice. In the interest of tolerance, it chooses to with draw from the sponsorship of the DRA2K_(© newspaper and the “Battle of Belts” tourney that was formerly backed by the Washington Post. Edwin B. Henderson, chairman of the committee on recreation for the NAACP in the District of Columbia, wrote Eugene Meyer, liberal editor of the Washington Post, pointing out that “mixed” boxing wasn’t pro hibited by law in Washington and professional mixed boxing has been going for years in Washington with out any “incidents.” He asked that the Post prevail upon the local AAU “not to restrict events solely to white boys.” The Washington Post, carried the following double column announce ment on its sports pages: “For two years, the Washington Post has sponsored the District of Columbia amateur boxing cham pionship tournament known as the Battle of Belts. There have been re peated requests that entries of col ored amateurs be accepted for the tournament. “The District of Columbia Ama teur Athletic union has consistently refused to permit colored boys to AAU boxing tournament, and here with does.” Mrs. Agnes Meyer, wife of the publisher of the Post, is a noted lib eral and heads the committee the Wilkie award that honors outstanding Negro journalist. ASKS CHURCHES TO LEAD IN ESTABLISHING NEW ORDER OF HUMAN BROTHERHOOD NEW YORK, Jan. 14 Em phasizing that racial tensions today are no longer “local” problems, but have world-wide consequences, the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America in a special race relations message called upon the churches of America to take the lead in establishing a new order of human.brotherhood. “The doctrine of racial superior ity in the modern world is dynamite. When we consider racial tensions to day we are not dealing with some lo cal or sectional or even national dif ficulty which, however serious, has strictly limited consequences,” the message declared. “Either we find a way of destroying the antagonisms of race and the lust for power, or Gruen Veri-Thin Cecile, 17 Jewel Precision move ment. 49.75 The exquisite elegance and enduring accuracy of a precision-built Gruen express exactly your feel ing of thankfulness for the return of a loved one.
