Th«* Crawford County plan, so called fDim the fact that it originated in Crawford Coun ty, Indiana, is attracting attention and gain log popularity with all partied! The Democ racy of Colusa County, California, are the first to adopt it on this coast. It originated with the Republicans of Crawford County In 18ÔH, and is substantially as follows: Instead of the primary and convention system as ut present practised by all parties, an iniquity entailed upon thc juJUics of the country by Martin Van Huren, Uie party about to make nominations gives notice through the Chair roan of the County or District Central Com mittee, as the ca&e may Is?, that on a certain day the men»l»era of the party named in the notice trill meet at their resjiective places or voting and there vote directly by ballot for their choice for candidates to l»e elected at the approaching election. Judges, tellers, and clerks are appointed to receive, count and record the votes, as at a regular election. These returns are sealed and transmitted to the Chairman ol the Central Committee, who has called the Committee to meet on a certain day, when the Chairman, in the presence and with the assistance of at le-ast a majority of said Committee, shall open and rount the returns from the various precincts and tho man having the highest aggregate number of votes for each particular office Fhall be declared the nominee of the party for thut office. The plan is well considered and guarded against members of the oppos ing party or parties taking part and control ing nominations, but ns we have not the de tails before us of it so as to lay its workings before the leader. It is certain that the present method of choosing candidates is faulty, and that it is a means of corruption that almost any thing would l>o an improvement on. trust the Crawford plan will be found to work wo!!, and that it will be universally adopted by all parties. are unable to give the gist We Giant |M)wderhaF been the theme of coriBiderabc discussion since the sad accident last week. properties except that it is quicker and stronger than any other substance known among blasters, except nltro-glycerino, which is said to be thc active principal in the pow der.
