Immigration is the absorbing ques
tion with our Webloot neighbors.
Tbe Oregonian publishes accounts
of enthusiastic meetings, having for
their object the attraction of popu
lation to Oregon. The Agricultural
society have published a book of
statistics, a copy of which we have
received, having in view the same
object. While these proceedings are
going on at Portland and through
out the Willamette,some three hund
red emigrants from the Western
Atlantic States are passing down the
Valley of Snake river, some in des
titute circumstances, .endeavoring
to reach the promised land of Ore
gon and Washington. Would it not
be a pious notion for the Immigrant
Aid Association to send out assist
ance in the way of transportation
and supplies to enable these people
to reach their destination.
Col.

load of vegetables and corn meal
to their camps a lew days ago, and
found several families without bread J
without money. They I

getting along the best way they
could. To those who had money
he sold and to those who had none
and some

he gave, until their present wants
were supplied. One old gentleman I
he found who hud lost a son, killed j
by Indians, and another whose wife ;
had been killed by tbe accidental
discharge of a rifle. These people, '
notwithstanding the completion of I
the railroad, have come all the way j
from Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kan- |
, etc., with ox and horse teams, j
in primitive style, suffering perhaps ,
twice the hardships of those who |
came at au earlier day, depending
wholly on themselves aud making
calculations for receiving sup

Tins Reynolds creek placer dig- j
ging», some four or fire miles north
of town, on the east branch of that
stream, attracted considerable notice
last week, and as a friend had kind
ly located a claim in cur name, we,
in company with Bill Norris, went
out on Friday to take a look. Ar
riving at the discovery claim we
found the Martin brothers and Mr.
Reynolds engaged in trying to pros
peut with a string of five sluice .
boxes, but with an insufficient head j
of water ; consequently it will be j
!
impossible this fall to form aoy just
estimate of the working value of the
mines. We tried but one pan, which
gave a few colors, but not from the
best part of tbe claiip, as they have j
begun at the lower end in order to j
get drainage and dump, when tbe 1
best prospects are obtained a hnnd
red yards above. The gravel and
clay in these claims look very well, '

wash. 1
Leaving our horses at this point, j
we made our way down the creek
about a half mile to our locations,
but found the bed of the stream so
full of boulders and large fir timber j
though tho latter is so sticky
and tough ns to be very hard to j
i
as to be uninviting as a location for
mining unless the ground should j
j prove immensely rich. We did not
; prospect here as the space between
the trees and rocks is so thickly cov
' ( . r ed with a heavy growth of willows, j
I vine maple and other vines and ;
j shrubbery, that it would require |
more time than we had at command j
to clear the ground preparatory to
commencing, and tuen irom appear- •
| ances we judged the soil to be very
deep. _ . , , fc , . , i
Returning, w*e visilea the oia An-1
toine ledge, which crosses the creek j
near the discovery, and found some
of the queerest rock we ever saw.

the rock in the Antoine. The min

and elected Wm. Martin Recorder.;
The district is known as Reynolds j

very fair diggiugs.
