This the first Monday in Jan. 1904 after the general election in Nov ember, the members elect being pres ent and duly qualified, the board organized by electing H. E. Buck president, with the following hers in attendance: president: T. G. Stephenson, J. D Weeks, G. Smith; J. E. Stanfield, sheriff, and Parham Williams, clerk W. L. Dyer was elected attorney for the board, and his salary is fixed at $250.00 per year, payable annually for the ensuing term. Matilda Hodges is retained matron of the Poor House at $10.(10 per month. Hy Hawkirs was elected j tnitor of the Court House for 1904 at $12.00 per month. Shepherd & Jordan are elected phy sicians for Poor House and Jail tor 1904. was mem 11. E. Buck. S. Warrant No. 91 drawn D ie. 31st, 1903, on Township fund 14 Range 1 west shoul I have been drawn on T. 14 R. 2 west, and the same was paid by the treasurer. In order to correct said error, said warrant will be charged to T. 14 R. 2 W. and so endorsed on said warrant. D. H. IIobb3 former sheriff, made his report as required by law upon the county convict, camp treatment of convicts. Report was received, approved and ordered tiled. T. B. Minyard is granted to March 1st next'to begin work on the arte sian well. and thn J. D. Weeks and T. G. Stevenson are appointed to receive the lumber to be placed on the road by R. M. Edwards, and paid when received. The treasurer is authorized to loan W- L. Jordan $500.00 out of school fund on 160 acres of land, when title is approved by the attorney of the board. Mr. J. E- Stanfield died at his home, here Friday morning at 8 o'clock and was interred in Odd Fellows' cemetery at noon on the next day. His death was a great shock to everybody in the county. Being a man of fine physique, never complaining, the announcement of his death came like a lightning stroke from a clear sky. He arose as usual that morning, attended to his nome affairs, ate breakfast and was about to leave for his office, when suddenly taken ill, he retired to his room to rest on his bed, and soon as soon as possible and report to the board. Ike S, Hat vey reports the roads in Beat 1 in fair condition, but the ap proaches to bridges are bad, especi ally so is that of the iron bridge south of Lexington, also that at Williams creek, built by R. C, Barger needs attention. II. E. Buck reports the roads in his beat will be inspected and fully reported on the next meeting. The treasurer is authorized to loan J M.,Weeks $525 on 120 acres of land out of school funds when title has been approved by the attorney of the board. G. S. Rogers and T. G. Stephenson are appointed to inspect bridge to be built by W. D. Robertson across Jor dan's creek. J. D.Weeks and W. L. Smith will inspect the bridge to be built by W. D. Robertson across Old river. The selection of the jury is post poned to the February meeting of the board. J. D. Weeks and T. J. Stephenson will inspect the county jail and re port the necessary repairs at the next meeting of this board. W. P. Tackett will be refunded $3.60, being a double assessment. W. A. He was popular and had many warm friends in every part of the county who attested their regard by attending his obsequies. One of the largest funeral processions ever witnessed here followed his re mains. Mr. Stanfield was born in Brooksville, Fla., May 16, 1851, and over half of his life was spent here He had served but four days of his second term as sheriff when overtaken by death. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C. Z. Ber ryhill in the Baptist church, the large seating capacity of which was insuffi cient to hold the attendance. He was a member of Lexington Commandery who acted as a guard of honor, while Lexington Lodge performed the last sad rites at the grave. Levy McGee, of Shenoah Hill, was in the throng Monday. All of the members „f both houseg with one or two excep .•_ . , tions were present. At the hour of . n °P enin K the conteat for the speakor ship of the house was the absorbing topic. Representatives Thomas, of Washington county,Smith.of Holmes, Millsaps, of Clay, Brown, of Adams and Barbour, of Harrison, were the candidates for speaker. All of them withdrew, however, excspt Thomas and Smith, before a vote was taken, and the withdrawing candidates with out an exception all voted for Thomas. Thomas having received a sufficient number of votes to elect him before the calling of the roll had been com pleted, Smith's name was withdrawn and Thomas was declared unanimous ly elected. Mr. Thomas had been a member of the House of Representatives for the two terms preceeding this. At the last session he was chairman of the committee on Ways and Means and was made chairman of the select committee to investigate the officers the penitentiary. L. H. Moore, of Rosedale, was elected president pro tem of the senate without any opposition. J. G. Murray Jr., of Ripley, was reelected secretary of the senate without op position. The usual accompanient of door keepers, pages, postmistresses, ser geants-at-arms have been selected. The committees will be appointed this afternoon and the legislature will be ready for work. Only one committee has been named so far—the judiciary committee of the senate, of which W. B. Walker, of Aberdeen, is chairman. Speaker Thomas has announced publicly that he has selected J. G. Millsaps, of West Point, to be chair mau of the house judiciary committee. At a joint session of both house* last week. Miss Mattie Plunkett was re-elect*d librarian, routing her op poneits with great ease. Tomorrow the contest betweaa Myar* and Brown for supreme court clerk will come up in the house. I may say that the members of tha legislature and all the visitors concur in the opinion that the new capitol i* a magnificient structure and by far the ineit capitol building in the Sonth.
