Wednesday morning we first went down to the Mecca and received our final "courtesies" (good for ten days). The Mecca has one peculiar feature, which the unwary stranger in hasty search of an important and necessary adjunct to all hotels "tho' we never mention it" is very apt to have forci bly impressed upon his cranium. The ceiling ayont the booblack's room through which you hastily seek entrance into the convenience is very low, and traversed with metal pipes. These make themselves evident to the traveler's skull, an he be not the more careful. Just why in a city of high buildings of which the Mecca is one there should be such anachronism, we let the gentle reader ponder for himself. While at the hotel we learned that the "grand banquet" to the Association, which had been advertised to take place this day, had anticipated its set date twenty-four hours, and was now a thing of the past. With the memory of another "banquet" gorging our soul, we drew a breath of relief on our own behalf and heaved a sigh of regret for the Association. Then we boarded the State street cable and, by way of the Kenneth, where the feminine con tingent was taken up, proceeded to the Fair. We decided to take in the sev eral State buildings this morning, and proceeded at once to carry out the work in hand. The Day State building was first visited. Various artcles of ancient date are here exhibited; old tables, uncomfortable-looking chairs, and a colonial wardrobe or two, take the mind back to the days of Indian mas sacres, armed worship, steeple-crowned hats and perforated Quaker tongues. In glass cases about the rooms are shown ancient legal documents, title deeds, newspapers, etc. The most noted of these is the original "informa tion" against a wicked citizen charging her with the practice of witchcraft "against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth," upon which present ment she was afterward tried, convict ed and executp&V We read the docu ment carefully, and found that the legal verbiage of that day could hold a pretty trood candle to the linerual in tricacy of the profession of to-day: an other proof that in many things the sires wore worthy progenitors of thei sons, and up to snuff in making a plain statement obscure to the understanding of the laity. Vermont, Connecticut and New Hampshire were visited, each in turn and many objects of antiquity and in terest inspected. Finally, we entered the Mount Vernon building, an exact eproduction of Washington's old home. and Virginia's contingent to the great Fair. It is filled with articles of "ye olden time," of special interest to those who love to poke anions; the ashes of the dead past. With reverence we looked upon objects at one time familiar to him who was "first in war, first in peace," and ever will be "first in the hearts of his countrymen." A harp sichord, once the property of Martha Custis, is of the collection. Its strings are hushed and tho fair hand that once compelled them into sweet sounds are dust; but in their presence are born of love and reverence sweeter harmony than ever waked the silence of old Vernon's sacred halls. This morning we are to meet by ap pointment, at 11 o'clock, one of Iron ton's "boys" in the happy days gone by, and his better half Mr. and Mrs. F. Scoville. As the hour now closely approaches we repair to the Court of Honor, and strictly on time we grasp Frank's extended hand in cordial em brace and renew the acquaintance of her whom we had known as schoolgirl, bride and matron. For a time even the Fair was forgotten in question and re sponse concerning friends and ac quaintance, and in recalling the scenes and incidents of the time "when we were boys together " All this time our ears were filled and our souls were thrilled with sweet strains from Thomas' famous orchestra, near by, and realism winged its darkened flight to other scenes. Our party, now of eight, then cross ed over to the Mines and Mining Build ing. Our entrance was marked by an agreeable sunrise, for almost the first person we ran against was Col. A. J. Sypher, Highest of all in Leavening Power.- Latest U. S. Gov't Report fl O mm 1 s&m Amwrmx pure Building, and found it rather uncom fortably crowded. We were told that interest in this exhibit never ceases, and that from opening to closing tho building is packed with people anxious to see -the living products of flowing river, encircled lake and "vasty deep." Certainly there is enough of curious life in the big glass tanks to challengo the wonder of the multitude. Sea turtles, conger eels, gold fish, gars, catfish, brook-trout, pike, buffalo, crabs, shell- formerly of Iron Mountain, lisn Qf innumerable species, etc., pass- and now with the Bullock M'f'g Co. of Chicago. His many friends in this see tion will be gratified tof earn that he is in excellent health, has congenial em ployment, looks young as ever and is still a hopeful candidate in the matri monial primary. Col. Sypher has charge of the Bullock exhibit, which is contiguous to the Missouri depart ment of the same building. He intro duced us to Col. tlovey, in charge or Gabriel's ledger. the Missouri exhibit in Mines and Mining, whom we found a most cour teous gentleman and perfect in the de tails ot his charge. Now, dear reader, we can't possibly give you, seriatim, an account of the thousands of things here exposed to the inspection and ap plause of all the world. We will, therefore, "lump it" in asserting that Old Missouri does herself justice in her 4 exhibit of her subterranean riches an exhibit in variety and value exceeded by none in the building. The Kegis- ed before our eyes in bewildering eon fusion, and when we retired, after two hours' survey, our memory tried in vain attempt to classify the things we had seen. All was a jumbled mass of beautiful and hideous, appetizing and nauseating. All id all, ichthyology has few charms for us; we are no disciple of Isaak Walton, and ttiero are no big fish lies recorded against us in Then we took in La Rabida, an exact reproduction of the Convent of that name in Spain, where Columbus found shelter in time of trouble, for himself and son, and where it The Gauntlet Taken. We saw that it was properly and plainly labeled, that Iron county might receive due credit. We were right at home in this section of the great Fair, for here are large photographs of scenery familiar to all persons hailing from Southeast Missouri: Iron Mountain, Pilot Knob, Granite Quarry, Bonne Terre, the Shut-In, etc. In this build ing stands Montana's solid silver statue one to another; which goes far to prove that in portrait-painting the artist of old was as uncertain in delineating the human face as is his humble successor in the great newspaper of to-day.
