Prices for American Mocks at London,

solidated Gas, and the local transportation
shares made gains on the lightest trading
of the week.
The Iron and Steel shares were inclined
to heaviness at prices a shade under those
recorded at jesterdaj's closing good
many usually active shares were abso
lutely neglected during the first hour, and
the ticker was in idleness a greater part
of the time. Just before the appearance
of the bank statement traders sold thc
market, and prices yielded easilj.
The bank statement was quite as unfa-'
vorable as expected, loans showing an in
crease of (21.152.500 and the surplus de
oreasing (2,973,700 The deposit account
showed an increase of (18.S69.600. Specie
increased J2.264.00d There was no stim
ulus in the statement for a dull market.
A further disposition to sell was responsi
ble for a rather heay tone, but the
changes were unimportant

bofoie. The first dH.vt, were strong and ac
tive, prices advancing rapidlj in manv
stockb, but during the latter part there has
been n leturn to the dullness and sagging
markets of two or three weeks ago The
public huvmg has, been frightened off ap
parent by the wmall declines 111 prices on
realizing and the bears have been active.

little business Negatively, however, the
situation ls satisfactorj enough The in

are selling short to people that are strou

than that, however, there are conservative
financial people that look for a return or

The policy being pursued by the Na
tional League clubs 111 securing the signa
tures of the btars of the diamond to con
tracts calling for increased salaries is no
doubt calculated to strike terror to the
hearts of the lesser lights and swing into
line any who might be inclined to follow
the fortunes of the proposed American s
sociation. In the event of the major organization
being unable to crush the new associa
tion, it would remove from the market the
more desirable plajers the men without
whom the national game would be like
"Hamlet" with Hamlet left out. and vho
cause the turnstiles to plaj a medloj dear
to the heart of thc magnate.
The conception of such a plan, however,
has proven far easler'than its execution,
a, the plavers realize that they are In a
good position to dictate terms and are
therefore holding off That the proprie
tors are read to make concessions is evi
denced by the fact that Hanlon "went the

Montreville, and is said to have promised

the club this time were not responsible
The incident ocurred in the fourteenth
round of the much talked of battle be
tween Joe.Cjans, of Baltimore, and Spike
Sullivan, of Ireland From the verj start
Sullivan was completelj outclassed. The
climax came when two minutes and seven
teen conds of the fouiteenth round had
elapsed Sullivan, arising from .uiothei
knock-down, was so groggj that he could
tcircelj stand. Referee Charlej "White in
terfered at this stage and declaied Gans
the winner.
One of Sullivan's seconds, Dan Donnellv
of Boston, concluded to take matters into
his own hands When White's back was
turned, Donnellj' dashed across the ring
and struck the refeTee a terrific blow upon
the left eje. DonnIIj's, knuckles laid bare
the cheekbone and nlso tent White head-over-heels
into a box In a jiffv a rough-and-tumble
fight was in progress Police

Baetjer, of the Johns Hopkins field and
track team, and Phjsical Director Mack
dermott hare made the final selections for
the Georgetown games. This is the first
team tb represent the J. H. U. since Mr.
Mackdermott was installed as a member of
the faculty. After much hard work the
first lesults of the training are now be
coming apparent, and the team as selected
will be the nucleus of further work dur
mg the year.
In spite, lioweer, of the efforts of cap
tain and coach the men are not whii 'is

McCoppin, night operator for the Norfolk
and Western Railroad at Higb Station,
noticed a light in C D. Higbv's general
store at 3 a m. Peeping in the window, he
saw a burglar working at the safe Mc
Coppin awoke Higby and his son and the
three went back to the store, where a
wagon laden with goods stood outside. The
burglar was still working on the safe and
Higby, sr , fired on him through the win
dow. The fellow was struck on the head,
but quicklv regained his feet and tried to
escape but was met at the door by joung
Higbv and a hand-to-hand encounter took
place
The robber finally broke awav but was
hred at twice, one bullet penetrating the
lungs and bringing him to the ground. He
was fatallv wounded, but was brought to
this citj and lodged in jail Papers on his
person show he had served three terms In
the Ohio penitentiary, which institution he
left three weeks ago He first gave the
nnnu of Johnson but being told he would
die he said his name was braham ork

police station is a torn, mangled ear which
up to Thursday night was attached to the
head of a Hjde Park burglar. This ear is
the onlj piece of evidence which the police
