The past week in the stock m.uket has

than that, however, there are conservative
financial people that look for a return or

The policy being pursued by the Na

doubt calculated to strike terror to the
hearts of the lesser lights and swing into
line any who might be inclined to follow
the fortunes of the proposed American s

being unable to crush the new associa

more desirable plajers the men without
whom the national game would be like
"Hamlet" with Hamlet left out. and vho
cause the turnstiles to plaj a medloj dear

The conception of such a plan, however,
has proven far easler'than its execution,

good position to dictate terms and are
therefore holding off That the proprie

The word "spj" has an tiglv sound, ow

jet in war limes spies afford an armj aid
which is as valuable ab it is highlj re
munerated One of the maxims for com
manding officers. In a book for their guid
ance written bj Lord Wolselej, is that a
successful spj must be petted and made
much of The m magement of spies is
verj difficult. Out of everj ten emploved
by the officer commanding a war district
he ls fortunate if one gives him truthful
information It is a most important thing
that spies should not be known to each
other. Great caie is generally taken bj
officers that each spj shall imagine that
he is the onlj one who is employtd
It 1 verv necessarj that all bona tide
spies should have about their persons
some means of proving themselves reallj
to be what thev represent themselves
Tor this purpose a coin of certain date,
a Bible of a certain edition, a Testament
with the seventh or fifteenth leaf torn out,
are gcnerallj emploved
Bj their means a spj who was emplojed
b an officer in a neutral State, making
his wav to the headquarters of the armj
in the field, could thus at once make him
self known to the intelligence department
there. In some instances it is considered
that a password or sign should be em
ploved, as it is less compromising. The
putting tip of the right hand to the light

gesture, is sometimes emplojed
The more extenbive the ramifications of
the sjbtem the better are the chances of
escaping detection Itiserj necessarj that
officers of the intelligence department
should be provided with speciallj- prepared
paper, upon which letters can be writ
ten in ink that docs not become lsible
until it has been subjected to gome chem
ical process. It is also necessarj that a
letter in ordinarj ink xbould invariably
be written on the same paper containing
the infoimation that it Is rcqimed to keep
secret
Although a spj runs the great risk of
immediate death. If he is detected, jet the
senice is not without glorj' at "times,
and it is certainly exircmeij luerathe.
