NEW YORK, .March 12. Material ad
vances wore scored in the stock market
this morning at the opening of business
and the dealings were in very fair vol
ume with interest well distributed through
out the market. Sugar Refining was par
ticularly strong and active, but, after the
initial dealings, the stock developed a.
tomewhat reactionary tendency. People's
Gas, also, had an uncertain tone after a
strong opening.
The industrial quarter was generally
strong with active dealings in American
Steel and Wire. Federal ?tel -and the to
bacco stocks. Anneonde Mining advanced
very sharply in the initial dealings. Ac
tive features of the railway list were Mis.
pouri Pacific. Union Pacitic, the granger
shares and Pennsylvania. The local trac
tion issues wort generally heavy, notably
Metropolitan Street Railway There was
little that was new bearing on the market
developed over Sunday, but sentiment
seemed to be cheerful and interest was
again keen in the expect ed operation? of
the new Currency law. The London mar
ket was reported buoyant both on the suc
c?6 of the British forces in Africa and on
the heavy over-subscriptions to the Brit
ish loan. Foreign houses were buyers to
a main extent in this market.

Unknown Indians Discovered on a
Hudson Bay Island.
A Primitive It nee Thnt Scientists

Home llcforc Christopher Coluiii
Ihih Soiled Westward First Saw
Other I'eople About u Year Affo.
NEW YORK. March 12. On a bis island
in Hudson's Bay a hitherto unknown tribe
of BsUimo has been found.
Whalers discovered them, and the au
thorities at the Museum of Natural His
tory, hearing the news, sent Capt. C. Cic
nier to investigate then. How well his
work h.is been done is evi lenojJ j' the
glass cases now at the Museum, fli'eu with
the strangest exhibit that ever came even
from the strange northland.
Until the last few months these people
had never seen a white man. The island
which they inhabit is called Southampton
Island, and is almost as large us the State
of Maine. It is at the northwestern end
of Hudson's Bay. For centuries this tribe
has not had the slfghtest coinmunica'ion
with other Eskimo. When discovered they
were still living in the stone age, and
knew no metals until they were introduc
ed within a year by visiting whalers, and
today they live just as they did when they
first emigrated from no one knows where.
Their residence probably antedates the
discovery of America by Columbus.
They speak a dialect different from that
of any ot. er known tribe. Their huts re
built of the skulls and jaws of whale, cov
ered over with skins of animals. Snow
huts are the fashion among other Eskimo.
In the middle of their primitive dwelling
stands the stone lamp (raised a lit Me from
the ground) which lights the home, heats
it. cooks the fowl, serves for melting snow,
drying clothes, and the psrfectl'ig of some
of their weapons and implements. Among
the Greenland Eskimo this lamp is hol
lowed out of soapstone. but on Southamp
ton Island the lamp is made of a Hat plec
of limestone, around the edg? of which
narrow pieces of limestone are glued.
Their pots are made of tlie same material,
one slab serving as the bottom and fur
others Tor the ends and sides of the (Uieer
rt sniiari not ever made. The nine is
made of deer's blood, grease, and lisa roe.
One glance at the Inside of one of these
pots lined with this pitchy mass is enough
to take away a white man's appetite for a
week.
Into the limestone lamp, which is an
oval, a foot or so wide and about two
inches deep. Is put oil from whale blub
ber. The wick is a piece of moss. The
pot Is placed over the lamp on a support,
on which hangs a piece of blubber which
melts from the heat and feeds the lamp
continually.
The dres of these people also differs in
design from that of other Eskimo. The
women's clothing Is made of the skin of
the reindeer, sewed skillfully and neatly
with needles of boue and sinews instead
of thread. The chief peculiarity lies in
four bags, two on the shoulders and two
on the legs. No one can see any use in
these bag, for they are sewn shut, but it
Is a tradition that formerly they were
much larger and were then used for carry
ing the children in. The style still per
sists, however, though children are no lon
ger carried in this fashion. Another pe
culiarity of feminine fashion on Southamp
ton Island is the head dress. Nothing like
it has been discovered the world over. The
women plait their hair in two plaits, part
ing the hair in the middle. The ends of
these plaits are then brought over the
shoulders and introduced into two tubes
of deerskin, about an Inch in diameter and
two feet long. From the lower tnd of
these tules hang v.hisps of hair, suggest
ing that the plaits which are actually
only long enough to teach the upper end of
the tube are so long that they iun
through the tubes and hang out a little.
Even among Eskimo women there is 'glo
ry in the hair."' and the fashion holds,
though every one understands the polite
fiction.
The members of thi tribe live altogether
by fishing and hunting, the whale being
the chief article of diet. The bone har
poons they use are tipped with chipped
Hints, as well a their arrow's and f pears.
The ingenuity with which they utilize the
whalebone is mot surprising. Cups and
buckets are made of it by bending it .-ound
and sewing on the bottoms Whalebone
serves them for weapons and implements
of utility. They even press it into service
for niakins tobocKaniike sleds. Some of
their sledges are made of walrus tusks as
runners and with deer's antlers as cross- j
pieces On so large an island as theirs i
there is an abundance of game, such f.s the j
seal, walrus and caribou. There are cnly j
hftv-eight persons in the wnole tribe, so
it is probable that it has decreased largely
during the centuries.
The island is thirty miles away from the
nearest point on the -diore of Hudson Bay,
where there is a colony of Eskimos, and
It is only once in a very long time that this
strait freezes over. The tribe cherishes a
tiadition that about seventy-live years ago
this happened, and two hunters from the
mainland visited them, though the visitors
were as much astonished as their hosts to
know that there were other men on earth.
Each tribe believed that they were the only
ppople in existence. Strangers never sited
them again, nor did they make any attempt
to return the call.
In the large amount of valuable material
which Captain Cromer has brought back
with him are many curious implements and
weapons. The huge bone earrings with long
pendants are primitive jewelry indeed.
There are hows and arrows with flint
points or heads, and harpoons of bone sim
ilarly pointed with stone. Combs carved
out of ivory, walrus tusks, and many curi
ous ivory ornaments and carvings are
there; pipes made of stone, bone needles,
sinew thread, raw hide dog whips, arrow
heads wrapped in intestine, and carried in
this fashion to replace those thai might be
lost in the chase. They also carve in slate,
and stone, and some of the quaint little
ligurcs of polar bears, musk ox, reindeer
and walrus, as well as of human beings,
will interest every beholder.
The arrangement of all the exhibit is not
yet completed, and it will probably be sev
eral weeks at least before this curious col
lection is placed before the wondering eyes
of the New York public; but when it Is, a
special visit to the museum for its study
will repay everyone.
