THE EVENING- TIMES, WASHINGTON, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11. 1900. DECLINES IK AMERICAN The Stock Market Influenced , , Depression in Loudon. I'liir! Avenue Hie Exception to the Tendency. IUkIiibt H.niillly From the Start Other Trnetloim Irrejru Inr An Averntce Drop of llnlf n l'cint In the Hallway SccuritlcN. NEW YORK. April 11. The Stock Mar ket opened active and rather unsettled, chiefly in sympathy with the London mar ket, Jii which declines were shown for the greater number, of American stocks. Bal timore and Ohio, common and preferred, wa,s an .exception to the general tendency ot the market at the opening of the busi ness, but later on it moved more in uni formity with the general market. Third Avenue was also a conspicuous exception to the general tendency of the market, the Etock rising rapidly from the start. The other local tractions were irregular. Brook lyn Rapid Transit and Manhattan furnish ing the bulk of .the activity. The early losses in the railway lit averaged about 1-2 point, but the bulk of the soiling seemed to be for professional account. The weakness of the London market was said to- beJn-jwirt owing to the unsat isfactory progress of the British forces in Africa, which was regarded as likely lo postpone the tettlement of the war. The inonejt market in London was also mate rially higher. .Koreign houses did not deal lery heavily in this market at the openinj of business. New York Stock Market. -Corrected -daily by "W. B. There was a further sharp de cline early in the day, in which nearlv the entire list participated, but before noon a rally occurred which looked like the possible beginning of a sustataed up ward movement. The elements in the sit uation are unchanged. The wiling has been largely professional, but jsoa fairlv heavy realizing has been induced by the decline. The important people ha'e for the moment largely absented themselves from the market apparently, perhaps with the idea that a bniall reaction will be good for the real health of the upward movement of prices. It is impossible to know what the immediate result will be, bttt with conditions so uniformly favorable careful market people are as conadent a ever that before man day have pass ed fbe tendency toward a Higher level of prices muet overcome any oppoeltioa from the boars. Call loan rates were 3 mad 8iI-2 per cent this morning. Talk of the bank statement is confident. The gross earnings of the St. PH for the ftret wee4v of April were 8W.1Q6. an in owwc of ?9.S4. The increase in the gross rwige for the year to date is ?5.1S7.I61 at the rate of ?4.00,03 for the year. Tkeee handsome figures which were pub lished this morning did not prevent a continuance of the decline of the grangers early today. The meetfug of the Continental Tobacco Company which takes place today was the subject of much discussion In the Street, especially as the securities of the companj were again weak. It is said by people who oHght to know what they are talking about that the earnings of the company been much lens than expected and that even the preferred dividend has not been earned, to say nothing of any surprus for common stock. There is to be another payment of bark dividends on the preferred stock or the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company in the near future. It is stated by people in au thority that the full 24 per cent that will be due on the stock on July 1 will be paid up before that date. When this step has been taken there will be no bar to a dis tribution of Burplus profits among the common stockholders and as the amount of surplus profits among the common-! stockholders, and as the amount of the surplus is immense there can be little doubt that an S per cent rate will be es tablished. Talk in the Street regarding the stock Is bullish. There is also bullish gossip regarding. Tennessee Coal and Iron. A very large majority of the holders of the preferred stock of this company have accepted the new common stock under the plan of the company announced a few weeks ago. The strength of the Baltimore and Ohio securities continues to attract attention. There is talk of favorable developments regarding the preferred stock, but a? to what their nature Is to be the gossipers differ. Third Avenue spurted again this morn ing in the characteristic Third Avenue way. It went as high as 122 in the first few minutos of tiie day. Mr. Law son, the Boston broker and spec ulator, has Interviewed himself regarding Sugar again-, and this time he asserts trat that stock will sell many points lower in the Immedial- iuture.
