(From tlie "Modern Mrreuii ) Ore asalng 51.000 to the ton is said to have been uncovered in a mine owned by J. M. Day, which Is located In the heart 01 the little village of Grub Gulch. .Madera county. The vein is from sixteen ;o eighteen inches in width. The shaft is down in it nearly thirty feet and the gold bearing ore taken out already is ery rich. Grub Gulch is located on the Raymond Wawona Road to the Vosemite Valley, al most twele miles from Raymond. It stands on the flank of a peculiar sugar loaf hill vhih rises abruptly out of the gorge of the Fresno River, opposite the mouth of Trench gulch. This hill bears the name of Indian peak, being used in early days as a signal station by the abor igines, the embers of whose signal fires are still to be seen on its summit. The peak is ribbed with gold-bearing veins running in all directions. Most of them are, how ever, of a very low grade. Several mines have been operated on these veins for eight or ten years past. One of them, the Mammoth, contains an enormous ore bofly, but it has not been profitably operated, al though electric power generated at the river was transmitted to the mill located at the chaft mouth, and used for hoisting ore from the mine. If anything substantial comes out of the recent discovery made at Grub Gulch, it will surely arouse Interest among mining men in the neighborhood, and may be pro ductive of many important developments. COALING SHIPS AT SEA. An Important Xavnl QncMion Aivnlt IriK' Solution. (From the Knjrinccring Xcwf,) The importance of the question of coal ing at sea increases directly as the increase of sea-power, and with the probability of fighting naval wars far from home shores the ratio rises enormously. England's firbt line of defence is said to be the ene my's coasL She is well supplied with coaling stations all around the world. But were she blockading foreign ports, how large a portion of the blockading fleet would be worse than ineffective, because itself subject to possible attack by supe rior force while steaming between block ade and coaling stations. The greater the distance to coal the greater the number of vessels continuously off station, and, with Guantanamo only fort; -five miles away, only three-fourths of the American ships could be kpt ac tually on blockade service. Germany fully appreciates the necessity of an apparatus for coaling at pea, as indicated by the statement of Rear" Admiral Pluddeican, who said recently: "It will be ab.-oluttly necesoary to take coal from z. collirr at sea " McyadiJAnos i'or CouKtlpatlan.
