The results of Health Officer Woodward's
tour of inspection or the crematory plants
ofottiercitles.wltl the view of determining
the future system of garbage disposal of
Washington, do not materially cliauge the
situation. But two of the incineration
processes weio at all satisfactory, and
it is not tertain that either of these will be
acceptable. At any rate further time will
be taken for Investigation.
The two systems that becmed to be near
est the desired standard were the Smith and
Brown crematories, respectively, the first
being operated in Philadelphia, the other
in Wilmington. Del. By the Smith method
the general waste is disposed of in the same
waythegarbaEeis.andbythesamepiocess.
The Brown plant consumes) the garbage
only, the dead animals being otherwise
diiposed of.
By the Brown system garbage is dumped
into one large furnace, and is consumed
by the nseor petroleum, hot air aud steam.
It dif-poses or 00,000 tons of reriiFe daily,
at a tout of abnut SI 0,000 per annum.
WHAT BROWN SYSTEM WOULD COST.
it. is believed that to establish such a
plant herii would Involve an expenditure
or nearly, tr uot quite, $50,000. Wil
mington health officers say the Brown
crematory is the Best for this city out of
all that had bocn inspected.
Dr Woodward, accompanied by Mr.
S V. Bayly, representing Contractor
Warfield, will next visit Pittsbifrg aud
St. Louis, to examine the Mere reduction
plant and the Roder crematory, the former
being ued in St. Louis. They will also
inspect the Simoiie method at Cincinnati,
and if necessary will thru go to Richmond
to investigate the Eagle by&tem.
There is to be no relaxation in tho
effort to get the best s stum extant, and the
question will not lie definitely hcttlcd for
several weeks.
Meanwhile Mr. Wnrfield's temporary
contract for the four months ending Oc
tober Bl , is in force. All the specifications
of the five-year contract, relating to collec
tion and disposal and dally rervice, are ap
plied, nnd it -will be the effort to have the
cremutory or other improved process in
operation by November 1.
Dr. Woodward's report or his iccent visit
to Philadelphia and Wilmington will be
submitted to tho Commissioners to-day.
SMALLPOX HOSPITAL CONTRACT.
The contract for the construction of the
smallpox hospital has not yet been awarded,
although most of the difficulties as to the
appropriation has been overcome.
The building inspector is of the opinion
that a first-class disinfecting plant can be
introduced for not to exceed $1 ,G00. This,
added to the cost of construction under the
lowest bid received, will uot consume the
appropriation, a balance of $1,059 re
maining. To construct a stable for housing the
horses -will probably cost $1,000, and this
would leave nothing for funnelling the
hospital, but it is believed that Congress
will appiopnate sufficient money to de
fray this expense, since, if all the buildings
and the disinfecting plant are provided, the
deficit will be comparatively quite an in
significint item.
The Cedar Cliff Cement Company objected
to the Commissioners deduction of $52
from its contract price for cement furnished
the District. Attorney Thomas submits
an opinion to the effect that the deduction
was proper. The delay in delivers of a
consignment of cement necessitated the
purchase of a large quantity in the open
market, which effected a saving to the
District ot the amount involved, and the
Commissioners deducted it from the next
payment made on the contract.

pairing mains and erecting nnd repairing
hydrants, $30,904.75; total, $90,000.

Is fixed at $2.25 per day, taking effect
July 1, 1895.

Virginia avenue, between Seventh and
Eighth streets Eoutheabt; in Seventh
street, between K and L streets south
east: in D street, between Eleventh and
Twelfth streets southeast; in Bright
wood avenue, between Sheridan and WThIt
ney avenues; in alleys of square 776; in
alleys of square 408; In Kenyon street,
between Thirteenth and Fourteenth streets;
In I street, between Second and Third
streets southeast, and in Lydecker street,
between T2slin and Sherman Jivenues.
Property-owners in L street northwest,
betweon Connecticut avenue and Seven
teenth street, object to the laying ot a
sewer in thnt thoroughfare. They were
represented before tbo Commissioners by
Col. TV. T. Tdoore, Mrs. A. W. Fletcher
and F. J. Tlbbetts.
