Her eyes sparkled with a happy light, and she moved with a lithesome, air step. Sorrow hud never thrown Its dark shadow across her path, but see was deatined ere the ilny'a festivities had hardly begun to have the sui.shine sliut out from her heart by itb somber piuloik. Upon that morning her husband gave her an affectionate kiss and a cheery good bje at the door, and, telling her to come along as boon as she could get the children ready, hurried away to the muster-field, as he was the chief gunner. Soon after hia arrival there, "Boom!" went the tannon, and cheer after cheer went up from the assembled multitude. Boom after boom rent the air, and the patriotic cheers of the people rev erljerated with the reports over woody, hilte and mossy dells There was oue more gun to be fired and then the speaking would begin El lington put in a Litger charge ot pontic: than he had ever before put into the oW gun The crowd fell baifc.soiue o I them chipping their hands to their fcara t deaden the sound The gunner ought hold of the siring, the pulling f which fired the piece, and taking his rap in his right hand twirled it above his head ad with bis left gave the string a jerk Then came a report which fairly shook the earth No cheers, though, mingled with the frightiul tontussiou, but Instead came groans and cnes of horror The gun had bur-led and-poor Tom Elhr.ton lay dead twenty feet from where the cannun had stood , with half of his head torn away by a piece of the flying metal, which fortunately had stmck no one else. Poor Tom! His death was instanta neous and must have been painless His cap was still clutched 111 his right hand, juust as he held it when he waved it for the las time above Ins head Tenderly his friends placed him on an Improvised stretcher aial started sadly for his home, from which he had departed so light-hearted and happy only an hour before His wife was jut prepanug to leave for the muster-field when the sad news of Tom's horrible death was gently brokCn to her. Mother and children WiUie, aged 10, and Kane, S met the sorrowful proces sion at the door and gave way to a grief which taused tender tears of sympathy to flow from the ejes of all present Yes, the Fourth of July had eouie again. and the bitter memories ot the last Inde pendence Day came forcibly and painfully to Widow Ellington and opened afresh the wound that generous-hearted time bad partly healed. Her sad, heart-aching retrospections were not her only troubles, Her husband was a poor man, dependent upon his daily labor for their support, and since his .death she had had a hard struggle to keep the wolf from the door. Often had she denied herself food, that the hunger of her children might be appeased. And this anniversary ot our glorious independ ence, aud of her husband's death, found her larder empty ai.d the last cent gone. Over on the common soire thirty or forty boys had assembled to consider in what manner they should celebrate tbe great est of all our national holidays. There was no need to buy powder for the can non, for there was already subscribed more money than was necessary for that purpose. There was going to be speaking and a big d.ui.er, as usual, but the boys wanted something more. One ot them proposed that they borrow the blacksmith's anvils aud make tLeir own noise. An other suggested that they put their money together and have a pyrotechnic display that night. Finally a boy, a handsome, manly-looking fellow of sixteen, with honest, serious brown eyes, mounted a stump aud said "Boys, 1 will tell you how we can make this the happiest Fourth ot July wc have ever known.'' "How? How?" cried a dozen or more of his companions, in umson. "You know." went on Hal Reed, the speaker, "that on the last Fourth poor Tom Ellington was killed. This is a sad Fourth or July for his widow. My mother who gives her sewing and helps her in other wavs, savs that often she has not enough for her children to eat. Even to-day she will have no good dinner, unless she goes to the grounds, and vou know, she couldn't do that, for it would make her too sad when she thought of poor Tom, and the last Fourth. The boys now gathered around Hal who after counting the money, said: "Eighteen dollars! Three eheersl" and they were given with a hearty good wffl. "Now, boys, fall in Una, two by two, and let's le marching.' After forming in line, Hal, who was authe liead, aud who had a great fondness tor anv thing military, cried. "Right about, faeal MaieW" awl tho procession started toward the village. "Wonder what in the world those boja are up-to now?" was tho question several ?meu asked each other when thy saw the lads approaching. The bos aid not a word, but marched to a grocery. Twenty-five dollars were invested Ja provisions, -white the other ekrhteea were to lie given to Mrs. Ellington for etothea, the boys not knowing what was Beedwl in that line. The groceries were nuwkj ap into pot eels, so that each boy could have some thing to carry, and the strange pieces siou started for Widow EMwgtott'S. She could not imagine what it an meant when she saw them open tito gate and come marching up to the house.
