The Democratic State senatorial conven tion for the Fourteenth district, comprising Alexandria city and Alexandria, rrlnce William and' Fairfax counties, assembled In the opera house at Alexandria at noon yesterday and by acclamation renominated Capt. George A. Mushbach to succeedTiira feelt as State Senator. Thecomenlion, which was composed of the representative men ot their respective counties, was called to order by llr. J. M. Love, the chairman f the Democratic committee of Fairfax county. Mr. J. B.T. Thornton, of Prince William count-, was selected as chairman, and Mr. Jas.E. Clem ents, ot Alexandria county, secretary. As there was to be no contest, the usual for malities incident tb the organization ot a convention wero dispensed with, and Mr. Leonard Marbury, of Alexandria, chairman of the district democratic committee. In a speech complimenting Capt. Mushbach on his record in the legislature, placed his name in nomination" for a tccond term. Thcjiomiuatlon was seconded by Messrs.F. W. Richardson, ot Fairfax county; II. M. Orows, ot rrlnce Wllllac: county, and A. A. Lipconib, of Alexandria county. Mr Lipscomb, In his seconding address, slated that lie supported Capt. Mushbach for the State senate because he was for the return ot Hon. John W. Daniel to the United Stales Senate. On motion ot Mr F. W. Richardson the rumination was made by acclamation, and Messrs Mooro and Richardson, ot Fairfax; Lcachman and Judge Lipscomb, of Prince William; A. A. Lipscomb and VeiUb, of Alexandria county, and Marbury and'Fick Hn, of Alexandria city, were appointed by the chair as a committee to wait on Capt. Mushbach, notify him of his nomination, and to escort him to the hall. After an absence of a few mlmlfes they returned to the hall, escorting Capt. Mushbach, whose entrance was greeted with applause. Mr. 11. W. Moore, of Fairfax, then Introduced Capt Mushbach, who. In becoming terms, accepted the nomination, after which the convention adjourned. The celebration of the fifth anniver sary of Alexandria Council, No. 33, Jr. O. U. A. SI., took place In Odd Fellows' Hall, on North Columbus street, last night, and was attended by a large throng of the members and their friends. Mr. Frank SI. Anderson, of Washington, was tlieorator of the evening, taking the order as his subject, and addresses were also made by Mr. A. W.iShuuk, of Washington, and by State Councilor O. D. Hopkins, of this city. The anniversary sermon oftbechurchwill be preached on Sunday next in the SI. E. Church South by the Ucv. J.T. Williams. Messrs. Charles" Beudheim and Louis C. Bailey yesterday announced themselves as candidates for the lower branch of State legislature. With Mr. Wm. II. May al ready in the field and Mr. E. B. Taylor, of this city, and James E. Clements, ot Alex andria county, as probable candidates, the fight promises to be a hot one. The con vention which will make one ot these gen tlemen the Democratic standard bearer will be held early In October. It Is understood here that the restry of old Christ Church have extended a call to the Ucv. William M. Clark, rector of St. George's Church, Fredericksburg, to fill the pulpit made vacant bythodeath of Rev.Dr. Suter, and that Dr. Clark will accept the call. The members of the vestry refuse to deny or affirm the story. The members of the Columbia Fire Com pany have thought better of the proposed disbandment of the company, and thepa per containing the names of those who pledged themselves to do no more work at fires has been destroyed. Stenmer City of Richmond Arrested. A warrant of arrest was Issued yesterday at the order of Judge Cox for the arrest ot the steamer City of Richmond, which has been plying all summer between Washing ton and Colonial Beach. The Slaryland and Washington Railway Company yesterday filed suit for the con demnation of land and the appointment of a commission to appraise value against the Northwest Eckington Improvement Com pany and others. The condemnation of a right of way asked for is Inline of Rhode Island avenue extended, where the road Is expected to run. The improvement company's land sought to be seized Is lot 35, Metropolis View. The others named in the suit, through whose land it Is proposed to extend the road, are Nelson E. Luckey, Thomas F. The meeting was called to order shortly after 11 o'clock by President A. O. Heaton. About sevcntyfivedelegates were present, representing a membership ot more than 500 members, scattered through out the country. After the convention bad been called to order, B. H. Collins made an eloquent ad dress ot welcome, to which President Hea ton appropriately responded. There was a considerable amount of pre liminary business, including a roll call, the reading of minutes, reports from the com mittees on credentials and rules, the ap-. polntment ot standing committees and the consideration of business brought over from the last meeting. At the, afternoon tesslon the following officers were elected: President, A. O. Heaton, this city; -vice resident, Joseph Hooper, Port Hope, On tario; tccretaryGiMirge W. Uice, Detroit, Mlth.; treasurer. Dr. A. L Ffther, Elk hart. Ind ; librarian and curator, W. C. Stone, Springfield, Slats.; superintendent of exchange. W.- J. Hanotaux, the French minister ot foreign affairs, and Prince Lobanoff arrived In a landau, followed by Gen. Dragomlroff, with Gen. Bolssct, on horseback. Their appearance was the sig nal for renewed shouts of "Vive Russie." President Faure, "accompanied by M. Ribol, minister of war; .M.'Besnard, min- -ister of marine, and numerous other offi cials, senators, and deputies, arrived and took up the positions assigned to them 3n the reviewing stand. President Faure then drove along the line. At luncheon President Faure made a speech, in which he said that be rejoiced to see around him such distinguished friends ot France. France was pacific, he said, and, confident in her power, would intrust her destiny with assurance to her sons. Among the guests at' the luncheon were Prince Nicolas, of Greece; Prince Lobanoff, and Gen. Dragomiroff. The extension of the road to Cabin John and beyond is ot course in prospect, but the company Is not prepared to say Just when the Traditional line will be"completed. Mr. Ernst Lent, the well known instructor of piano and guitar, will reorganize theWash ington String Orchestra, introduced with so much success last spring. This year two concerts with the assistance of prominent soloists will beglvenatMetzerottMusicHall. The orchestra is to be increased to sixty performers, and rehearsals will be resumed In the early part of October. The pro gramme comprises several novelties. Be sides the numbers for the String Orchestra alone, some pieces will be given with six or eight pianos, a feature so well received last season.
