Griffin -was the one to go tills time and it is not likely that he -,vlll-ooii hate a chance to glv.- the public such another ride -was dished out I" them on Ponce de Leon, in the fourth race. Biva was the favorite !a the event, be ItilS very heavily backed while no one ai parcnlly wanted any part of old Ponce. It was whispered oil over the rliip: that he was on the shelf nnd every one steered clear of him. From the fall of the flnfr Griffin adopted the very tactics, that wero sure to defeat him. He went to -work with his bat the first jump that the horse made and nt'er let up on him until the wire was readied. As Ponce absolutely refuses to run under the whip he sulked the eutirc trlpnnd in con- MMuence rimsheit second. There was som dissatisfaction expressed attho tullus, but Judge Martin very seldom makes u mbtakc in nutters of this kind and lis dollars to dnuchuuts that Griffin received his just deserts. There was a irritable slaughter of the nine bookies that did busluc;s. The four favorites that won were every one of Ihem hammered at from the time the liettins opened until the starter's little rtd flag; fell nnd they flashed away from the post. Velvet Rose, Pomace and I)r. Faust were the ones played in the opening event. At the finish Velvet Hose was the only one to Ret any part of the. money, nnd she was a bad ttil ul to Juanita and Uelvini. This representative of the I'lestel 6table did not have the easy time that llallle Gay did in Ills race, but nevertheless managed to cash, which was just as much good to his backers as If he had won by six city blocks. It was a hard fight, and Washburn only landed Siv.i a winner by a head from Ponce do Leon, Willi Siberia a. neck behind. The betting In the fifth race looked -cry e.lsileiou for a time.
