THE WILD WOMAN OF THE NAVIDAI). About a year since nn account wns published in the Victoria Advocate respecting a strange creature, whose tracks had been discovered on the banks of the Navid.id, near Texana The foot marks of tlii3 creature re sembled those ofa woman.am! a report was circulated to the ellect that a wild-woman had made her retreat in the forest of the Navidad. Within a few weeks several attempts have been tnado to capture this singular lioing. Mr. Glascock pursued it for several days with dogs, and at one tunc an proached so near it as to cast a lasso upon its shoulders. It however, with great adroitness eluded tin snare, and fled to a dense thicket, where it could not be traced. Mr. (ilntcock slates that he was near a small prairie en closed by the border forests of the river, when the cicUr.re emerged from the woody, and ran across the prairie in full view, it was about five feet high, resemblini a human being, but covered with hair ofa red dish brown color. In its hand it held a stick about six feet lonir, which it flourished from side to side, ns if to regulate its motions, and aid it when running at lull speed. Its head and "neck are covered with very long hair, which streamed backward in the wind. It ran with the speed of a deer, and was soon out of sight. The dogs pursued it, and came so close upon it at a small creek, that it was compelled to drop its stick, which was taken lv its pursuers. This slick is about six feet Ion?, straight and smooth as if polished with glass. Several other parsons have repeated! f seen the creature, and thev all concur in representing it as a hu man being, but so covered with Mian jjy bairns to resemble nn o'urang ou lang. It has frequently appr mdtctl 'the houses of the settlers in that neigh borhood during the night, and stole Various articles among oilier things it carried off a quantity of towels, one or two books, and has also taken sev eral pigs. One of Us nests were found in the loresl, in which were several napkins, folded up just ns they were taken from the house, and a Bible marked J. J. Wright. A bill for washing also enclosed in the I'ililc. The foot-marks of this strange being liavc been traced to the bottom of the Navidad, but it has eluded nil attempts to capture it. I he old settlers in that section say that these foot-marks have been noticed for ten or twelve years, nml that several vcars njro there were other foot-marks, indicating that three nf these creatures were in company. Within the last year the foot-marks of onlv one have been noticed. Mr Glascock intends to collect a pack of good hound3 atiij resume the pursuit, and he is continent that he will sue ceed in capturing it. lie has incur red considerable expense, and has ex posed to great hardships and danger to secure it, thus evincing his-full be lief in the identity of this mysterious being. It is not improbable that dur ing the war of the devolution when the people of that section wrro driven from their homes by t'ie victorious army of Urren, some children might have been secreted in the woods or left there, and their relations never returning, have become like wild beasts, clothed with hair, nnd feeding upon herbs and such small nnimals ns they can capture or piller Iroin set tiers. Houston Texas) Telegraph. Society ih -Z'iiii.aijklimiia. The Daily News stales the estimated pop ulation of Philadelphia at the present time to be 350,000, or, in other words, 70,000 families. Of this number, only 200 families have a competency for support above manual labor; 20,000 .depend upon mechanical and profes sional branches: and the residue of 47,000 is divided into two parts, viz: 30,000 who labor or arc desirous of laboring, and 17,000 who resort to illegitimate and criminal means for n livelihood. Of this class, G000 are supposed to be beggars; 4000 who depend uporufce oflaJ of the streets and what they can eollcct from the .feitchens of the wealthy; 3000 who oteal; 100 who starve for want of nny kind of support; and 3000 who follow a promiscuous livelihood. Such is the state of society in Philadelphia and the elements which compose it. A negro boy in Louisiana, during the cholera, hearing his lather say that the disease would soon be along that wav, left his work and betook himself to the woods. Being found by his overseer fast asleep, he excused himself on the ground that not being prepared in mind to die he had gone to the woods to "meditate." Out said the overseer, "how was it that you went to asleep? " "Well, I don't know, massn, how dat was zactly, biT. 1 speck I ovenprayed myself." ' The Bellasl (Me.) That fatal malady, typhoid fever, preyed upon ihe vitals of the deceased for some four weeks and then wrested from our em brace our friend John V. The wri er ol this trifling memento to departed worth, was intimately acquainted willi the deceased from his infancy an I can testi'y io his many commendable q-inl ilies. In lite untimely death of litis talented youth, society has lost one of its brightest ornaments, and morality one of its main supports. I J is unohlruisive manner and mild deportment elicited ihe admiration, and his upright benevolent and obliging disposition, the warm esteptn and lasting regard of his numerous school males. He was an obedient son, an affection' ate brother, and an agreeable nssocinte. He tins led a name identified with morality, hon esty and clf-ib lity, nnd nl-o, a wound which, like the waters of an intermitting spring, will seemingly be arretted in its course, but which iiguin will burst forth in all the ttiribulency of grief.
