T TORN PAGES CALIFORNIA. The Washington correspondent of tho liaiuinoro Sun in a letter of the 21st ult., says, in rcaanl to tlio slave ry excitement and California, that The best thing that CWrress rati .'do, is to, perhaps, do noiliinir. They might do well to give California some necessary legislation, pass the appro priation bills, and adjourn. The al terative measure is to protract the session, merely with n view to the exhibition of scenes of strife, confus ion, and perhaps, violence. As Gen. Cass said yesterday, "hard words may lead to hard blows." The northern men, who, until re cently, have taken little share in the slavery discussion, have got up their blood, and are hurling fierce defiance at the South. Horace Mann's speech was a declaration of war. He de clared that the North would not yield an inch, even to avert the calamities of civil war. Tliaddeus Stevens preached a crusade against the ac cursed institution. Col. Missel's speech ol to-day, was full of scornful taunts, and fiery invective, and fierce dentin ciation against the South. These arc men who are addicted to no gasco nade, and they mean what they say. It appears to me that the North his assumed n Irghcr and holder tone than at any former time, and that the argument on which they rely is the sword. Gen. Cass's speech in reply to Mr. Clements was the warmest and most eloquent that he has ever delivered, and because it came from his heart. If his was not the tone of defiance, it was that of despair. Ho warned the South that th'ir threat had drioen the North to the. wall, and he declared emphatically, fur himself, that he cou'd not stand it. The claims made by Southern men in behalf of slavery, as nn institution, he utterly repudiated, and in fact, his whole speech consisted of objurgations, against the South, and the expression of a positive belief that the question must lead to civil war. Gkhat Union iJi:E'mu iv Ni;w York Citv. Pursuant to a call, signed by between two or three thou sand of the most respectable and sub stantial citizens of New-York, invit ing n meeting of their follow citizens, irrespectie of party distinction, in favor of sustaining the Union by the permanent settlement of the two great questions now agitating the Nation, upon the basis of the Compromise Resolutions introduced into the Senate of the United States by the Hon. Henry Clay, there assembled at Cm tic Garden on .Monday hist, the largest public meeting ever witnessed in New -York. Wc are informed through the Tel cgraph, that the number of persons present was not less than ten thousand. Mr. Woodhull, the Mayor of the city, presided. Mr. Whiting and other gentlemen addressed the meeting, all of whom spoke warmly in favor of compromising the question of slavery, nnd wore eloquent in spcuking of the perpetuity of the Union. A n epitome of the brief remarks of' Major Gen. Scott, who occupied a position on the platform, has been transmitted by llie Telegraph Reporter, as follows: 'He expressed his strong attach ment to the Union, which he bad ser ved for nearly forty-two years, and disclaimed nil party considerations in li is devotion to our glorious confeder acy. He said he was charmed with the admirable spirit of conciliation manifested by those present, an I with the complete harmony which perv id ed the whole immense assemblage. For himself, he stood there neither a pro slavery man nor an abolitionist j neither a Whig nor a Democrat ; but aSa firm, unwavering friend of the, u...m. u. m on..!, n.c. no irusicu would never be destroyed." ! All the proceedings were evincive , of the most ardent patriotism, and the greatest unanimity of feeling and pur pose prevailed amongst the congrc 1 gated masses. , !tinrt DISUNION. Some of our contemporaries and some of our correspondents, will per sist in anticipating the possibility of ii-'ii!iion. No sooner has the good ship of State thrown off the "threat ening" surge like spray from her bows, than again we hear the cry from some seared landman, "breakers ahead I" True, true enough, there arc "frraii ers" and those who choose to go out from ihe ship into their own.frail tiny bark, will riot be slow to find them. Singly, or in fleets, they will but dare the tempest that must overwhelm them. From the south or from the north, the same inevitable fate men aces the foolish advontuier and his crazy bark. Happy it will be for them if the staunch oi l ship should still bo within helping distance of their drowning cries. And once aboard again, what a fata must await them there. The dirtiest powder monkey who has stood last by the ship will decline with proper dignity, the equiv ocal honor of their acquaintance. But there is a question which seems to have been overlooked by the agita tors of disunion. Who is to carrj out the practical department of the project? Wc could split tho Union into fragments by a stroke of the pen, and declare it dissolved beyond reme dy before the next issue of the Sun; but wc should bo at ,1 loss to know where to look for a corporal's guard to help us carry out tho notion. Wc think wo see our good citizens passing by on the other side, throwing a glance of pttv this way, in quest of the man who dissolved the Union. Perhaps some half a dozen loafers iind who don't know but we may slan der to that extent even that fashiona ble c'.iss of society might discover a chance for a little gratuitous notoriety with nothing more disastrous than a lunatic asylum ahead, and take a hand's turn for a day or two with us. But what would all tho rest of the folks be at? There is something so terribly startling in tho following facts, and so fearfully exemplifying the grievous sin and extreme peril of blaspheming the name of the Eternal, that had we not made minute ami careful inquiry, even among the very haunts of those living where the occurrence took place, we should have believed the whole to bo nn exaggerated rumor of some ordinary nnd every day casualty, rather than the awfully true narrative of a dreadful judgment. On the morn ing of Sunday l ist, a married woman, residing in the Friars' Fields, named Sarah Morgan, was observed with an infant in her arms, near her own house, disputing with a woman named Eliza, bcth Volan. A quarrel of a very vio lent character, so far as words went, shortly afterwards ensued, anil in re ply to an observation made by the woman, Sarah Morgan exclaimed that she hoped that God Almighty would strike her blind, deaf, dumb nnd stiff if she did not revenge herself upon her in a particular manner. Aimost directly she staggered, let her child fall from her arms to the ground, and would herself apparently have fallen but that her neighbors immediately assisted her into the house. Dr. Stack was promptly in alien dance, who, wc need scarcely remark, continued to render her every assis tance which medical skill and human ity could suggest. From the moment that she was thus mysteriously strick en, to the hour of her death, at half past one o'clock on Wednesday morn ing, the only words she uttered, and just after she was borne in, were, " Lord, have mercy on my poor soul have mercy on my children !" and then her voice failed her and she be came dumb, her sense of hearing was destroyed, her eyes became glassy and sightless, and in about sixty hours from the moment in which she was struck down, Death placed his icy hand upon her, nnd she became a corpse. This fearful event has pro duced a painful sensation even among the abandoned creatures of the locality in wliidi it occurred. Monmouth (Eng.) Merlin.
