There was another cabinet council yexterdav, at which our rela tions with Cuba were fully discussed. I lie members of. tho cabinet in favor of immedi ate and energetic steps taken against Cuba were: . The President, Secretary Ontherie, Secretary Davis, Secretary Campbell, Secretary dobbin, Secretary McClelland. Against any decided movement for the present, were Stcrctary Marcv, Attorney General Gushing. Secretary Davis was in favor of the most decided action to compel an immediate npol ojjy, from the Captain General. I um told that Davis is very violent, and urges the strongest measures for reparation. ' Orders have been sent to Peiisacohi, Nor folk, Philadelphia, New Vork, and Boston, to have till available vessels and material pre pared for immediate service, and instructions have been issued to all naval otiicers at thoso points to hold themselves in readiness for sea. It is thought that n portion of tho Mediterranean fleet, us well as tho Brazil squadron, will be called home for the emer ge n ey. Preparations for War Energetic Measures Contemplated. Washington, .March 30, 10 P. M. Another consultation with his Cabinet has determined the President to draw from the different stations every vessel which can pos sibly bo spared, und order them forthwith to join the (iuif squadron. A largo portion of tho late navy appropriations will ho expended in providing steamers, ostensibly to trans port provisions, but really to transport men nd military stores to our Southern coast. A decided step is to he tilscn, and the conse quences left to take Care of themselves. War is the only theme discussed on the streets to day. An extra session of Congress is regarded ss impracticable, as only three of the South ern States could he represented. President l'ierce Will adopt Mr. Polk's plan, and con sider a state of war existine;. 1 am happy in being able to assure- you tl ut the policy now resolved upon by tint government, hits the Cabinet with it as u unit M sentiment, and that sentiment adopts im mediate action fur the recent insults which ur 6 ig him been made to sillier under, and rtvleTs to obtain redress have been forwarded to those who will too gladly see them car ried into execution. One vastly important feature, brought about by the recent irans:c ons in mid about Cuba, relluctiug upon our nat'onal reputation is, that whilst the gov- rrnment will not er.cuur ge (filibustering it will not for the future, tind it incumbent up on it to listen to the various reports of schemes on foot for invasion. DEATH OF COL. McCLUNG. Tho Jackson Mississippi;!!!, of the 22 d nit., gives tho following particulars of the suicide of Col. MuClunr, of Mississippi: "Our community has rarely ever sustained greater shock than when on Saturday last it became known that Col. Alexander K. McClung had come to his death by bis own h mils, at his lodgings at the Eagle Hotel. The weapon used was a pistol the ball en tering behind tho right ear. Its report was Indistinctly heard by some of the house, but it did not uwaken suspicion of a serious occur rence. Some half hour afterwards n servant bad occasion to visit his room, when life was found to bo exlincti Those with whom the deceased had conversed during the day had received I rem hint no intimation of his inten tion, nor did ho leave behind him any expla nation of the cause which prompted tho mel ancholy act. He was about forty-one or two years of nge." With all his eccentricities, Col. McClnng was, confessedly, one of the most intellectual men in the South, 1'he Mississippian (al ways opposed txi him in politics) pays him the highest compliment: "His talents were of the highest order. His genius was great nnd original. To a rieli and vivid imagina tion, sparkling wit, withering satire, nnd a cultivated taste he added a logical and in tensely severe precision of thought. There was nothing cuumwnplam in anything which emanated from bis brain. Whether as a writer or an extemporaneous speaker, the same preeminence marked bis productions. Kilt the profession of arms best united him. He was n soldier by nature, nnd no Richard or paladin of old better merited than he the title- of "Jon-Hearted!" A Patriot after his Hountt Land. Tho following; is a copy of ono'ol two thou sand letters applying for bounty lands under tin, law of the last session of Congress, which were received yesterday at tho Pension Bureau. Your friend, Altos Burnt. A Model Jury. We saw in one of our English exchanges that two men were lately indicted ut the Stafford sessions for stealing port wine. Thoy went to the White Hart cellar, nnd having got drunk.stole a bottle of port from the bin and hid it. It was deemed essential tlmtthe jury should decide whether the stolen wine was actually taken from the bin in question, and this could only lie done by tasting. Two bottles were accordingly handed up, but so dillii-ult was the point that the jury were unable to arrive at liny satis factory decision unli they had finished both bottles. They then convicted the prisoners on w hich the prisoners' counsel remarked that if they bad not lone justice to their cli ents, they had ccrtahly done justice to the wine. trfiMoney is a lottoinlcss sen, in which honor, conscience sal truth tuny be drown. d. THE WAR. Describing the receut storming of s Russian redoubt bv the French, tho London Times says : It appears by the last accounts that, the purpose of the allied m-neruls is still fixed on the prosecution of the siee by menus of a honil rtrdinciit, followed by nil assault. Two expiTiuifiitul attacks have been ina.le bv the Fiem-h in two different wnys, which serve to show that it is not easy to gain an sdvniitazo ovtr an indefatigable antnyotiist, ft appears front l.otli the KiieMnn mid French reports that in the night of the 21.st of February the Russians succeeded in throwing; U with irrest rnpidity a new redoubt on the rL'ht hank of the cartelling 1is!'bul. Within forty-eijlit hours Gen. Cunrobert resolved to force this new position, ami the attack wss riiade be fore the work llrtd bccii completed. A lurise IRnly f French troops, under Gen. Moueto; advanced in the ni'ht of tba SSd, against this redoubt. The Zntinves rushed upon the in-lieiK-hiiiviils wilh the utmost bravery, nnd i saniruiiinry contest ensiled, which co-'t nearly null of llnse admirable soldiers. The lius sian inf.ii;ry regiments of SeleiiL'hinski and Volhyma, tinder (.ien. Krotislvltoff, defended the work with frrent steadiness, and after a severe oomVat the French column was com pelled to retreat. This unfortunate result bus been attributed to several causes the disclosure by spies of the French plan of at tack, the firs, of the Russian vessels in the harbor and fiom the surrounding forts, and a want of steatViness on the part of one portion of the assailants, who are said to have left the Zouaves to bear the brunt of the engage ment. " We are unable to determine with . certain ty whut amount of trutfi there may be iu these statements, but it is undoubtedly true that the Uussiu us appear to have expected the attack, and had occupied the position with a small army rather thnn with a detach ment in proportion to its extent. On the side of the French the force consisted of only half a brigade of Zouaves, 1,601) strong, two bat ta'ilions of marines, 2,3nO strong, and 400 vol unteers, in all less than 4,5oii men. The Russians were 10,000 strong, and the unfortu nate Zouaves fell into n regular ambuscade. Neverthelea, such was ill dauntless vigor of these troops that they stormed the redoubt ami held one half of it against fearful odd's, when the Russians succeeded in outflanking the column; the marines were separated from the Zouaves and driven back in all direct ions, and the bitter were Completely surrounded by the enemy. A second time they succeed ed by sheer hnnd to hind righting, in com pleting the capture of the redoubt, but no sooner had the Russian infantry fallen back than the batteries and ships opened a terrific tire upon the work and rendered it complete ly untenable. It was not till then that Gen eral Jlouet who was twice severely wounded, ordered a retreat, and though the niu'ht was disastrous from the loss of many Hundred lives and the failure of the chief object, the gallantry displayed by the Zouaves was such that this repulse mny well be ranked with their most brilliant achievements. To the Officers and Soldiers, ai d the Defen dants of the Officer and Soldiers, of the Army of the Revolution. It is suggested, wherever n standard was raised, n sw ord drawn, or srun tired in defence of liberty, or one drop of Revolutionary blood remains, that yon call meetings throughout the Union and pass resolutions, binding your selves, and urging your children and friends to bind themselves, to vote for no man, w hat ever may be his political opinions, in the Senate or House of Representatives of the. United States, unless he pledge himself, If elected, to do an act of long deferred justice in voting the half pay for life solemnly prom ised by a Continental Congros to keep to gether a sufTering.starving army on the brink of ruin, by whose patience, perseverance, faith and valor the present generation are indebted for a tree nnd independent Government. The old cry that the Government was too poor to pay their honest debts can with truth exist no longer; but now, with an overflowing treasury, the ballot-box, nnd that nlone, is your only hope and last resort. Friends and lovers uf our glorious Revolu tion and of out glorious Declaration of Inde pendence from British rule, bo firm and stead fast like your forefathers! When elections take place, be prepared to tn.ikc one grand rally, rush to tlie polls and the ballot-box, di'posile your votes for men upon w hom you can rely to obtain for you your long neglect ed rights. )o not consider yourselves hum ble petitioners or servile beggars to a body without heart or soul, but consider yourselves Americans and freemen; that ) have it in your porter, through the ballot-box, of trVik ii tr yourselves heard in tones of thunder throughout the halls of Congress. A Descendant of a Ucncral Officei, Who asks nothing for himself of Government. It is hoped th.it editors throughout the Union loving justice nnd national integrity will give the above one or moie insertions in their journals. To tub Point. Wo have never seen scriptural quotations more aptly applied, than in the following dialogue, which took place at thu t ible of Bishop Doaiie: It is stated that Bishop Doane.of New Jer. bcv, is sirengly opposed to temperance. A short time since, Rev. Mr. Perkins, of the same denomination, and a member of the or der of "Sons," dined with tho Bishop, who, pouring out a glass of wine, desired the rev erend gentleman to drink with him, where upon he replied: " Can't do it, Bishop, wine is a mock er." "Take s glass of brandy, then," Baid the distinguished ecclesiastic. "Can't do it, Bisho)), 'strong drink is rag ing.1 " By this time the Bishop, becoming some what restive nnd excited, said to Mr. Per kins : "You'll pass tho decanter to tho gentleman next to you," ' "No, Bishop, I can't do that,' woe unto him that puttelli the bottle to his neighbor's lips.' " What was the peculiar mnn'.al condition .r n,iril Ht ito of the Bislion at this Maize of the proceedings our informant did not state. f jy"The Michigan Expositor, in comment ing on the remark of a contemporary that "the snow in this vicinity is two feet deep, observes, "It is two AnefJ deep here." -g?""l love to hear n hearty laugh," says s pleasant American Magazinist.
