r CHOLERA. For the Post itt. Editor; had thought for lomo lime that t loins ftiturs perloil I would drop f.w IboughU upon the itilijoot of Cholera to ' the numerous reader! of the Post, j your ontent; and as the season is approaching when this seourga of the human moo is most likely to make its appearance, this is probably s suitable a time as could' be selected. The history of cholera is a curious one, and its spread by contagion or otherwise a mooted question, and does not materially olTiiet our presentpurpose. Much has been said about the Exemption of pint-wood reyiont from the ravages of cholera, and all without til shadow of a foundation fur the truth of such An opin ion. I could give numerous init unites of tlie visitations of cholera in pine regions of the South, in the spread of the disease in 1848-9. This section was visited in the Hummer of J 868 with epidemic dgientery of a low grmle or typhoid type; also the past Summer of '01, and some cases complicated with choleric tymptomt supervening upon tlia dysentery, and a few canes of genuine cholera. We know not hnt this seetion or portions of it may suffer from this dread calamity this sea son, hence the necessity of being to some ex tent posted up with its nature and symptoms. It has been argued by some, and among that number (otherwise) intelligent physicians, that genuine Aaintio cholera has never yet visited this oountry. We would just say if this be true, Hint Asiatic cholera has never visited New Orleans or any other city in the United States or Canadas -eVr cases have oe-eari-ed in this county with all the charac teristic symptom of the disease, and termina ted fatally in less than twelve hours, and we have already seen indications of the disease this season, in the person of a child laboring under suspicious diarrnha'O, cramping and dying in a few hours. Cholera is a disease that in a large majority of cases gives fuir warning by being precetled by a dinrrhan, which diflers but little from ordinary diar rhoea, and is as amenable to treatment as a common diarrhoea if early applied in its in eipient stage. It is certainty more in ac oordance with the dictates' of common sense nd reason to warn au individual, individu als, or a community, of danger" from any aource whatever, than to lull them into secu rity, by crying No danger I nine alalia I The most of epidemius or sporadic diseases hnve some regularity in their approncii and duration. It is true, we cannot in every in stance demonstrate whnt produces them, but we can form some idea. We can calculate with some degree of certainly as to when and how they will attack and the length of time they will afflict us. But -ditaYtccliolera baf lies all such calculations. It comes at every season in the year in damp and dry weather, under favorable and apparently unfavorable circumstances, fur the outbreak of the dis ease. The manner in which it travels is still a myteryl might add its peculiar mystery. Last seasou this section of country was ex posed to a cholera miasm or virui, or choleric mtmonphere, but not sufficiently strong to at tack most constitutions, until depressed or undermined to some extent by the prevailing epidemic (dysentery,) or subject to some ex citing cause, such as intemperance in some of its varied forms, the too free use of vegetable diet, exposure to the damp or night air, the relaxing influence of a Summer's meridian in, or the depressing iuflunnce of fear, con .utional diseases, Ac As to premedication or preventives to an attack of cholera when in an exposed condition, I have but little confidence in and believe in ninny instances they prove decidedly injurious, by acting as n exciting cause in disturbing the stomach and bowels and Inducing an attack of the disease we are trying to prevent. A great variety of preventives have been recummend tl from time to time, without any good re suiting in a single instance that I can call to mind at present. The best possible course that can be pursued when there is danger at hand from cholera, consists in regular, uni form habits in every respect, agreeable oceti potion, and temperate but generous living, upon wholesome diet. I believe persons have but little to fear, even in cholera districts, that will act up to these last requirements. OBSERVER..
