cert at the California Hall,

Judging by the early inter
est taken by our members
and friends in this event,
we're fully confident that the
celebration will assume great
er importance than any we
have ever staged.
Although mention of some
of the highlights of the cele
bration has been made in
previous issues of the "Zajed
ničar," we now wish to point
out a number of key items
which are destined to make
this the outstanding event of
the year.
Ray Hacket's popular CBS
Orchestra will be on hand to
furnish the music, along with
that famous Yugoslav tenor,
Antone Soljanich.
With these entertainers al
realy scheduled, we are still
searching for talent among
our members.
If you want to be on the
program, simply inform yours
truly of the fact and we will
see that a spot is made for
you. Of course, the deadline
for doing so is September
10th, so come on folks, regis
ter now.
The members of the Cen

the Croatian Fraternal Union

the urgent need of greater ac
tion on our part in the cur
rent CFU Membership Cam

ified to speak on this subject,
since he has for many years
shown great achievement in
Lodge work and in enrolling
many new members for our
Society.

tieth Anniversary of the founding of the Croatian Fraternal
Union and its operation among Croatians and other Slavic
peoples in the United States and Canada, and in order to
honor properly the memory of the founders and all other
members of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America who
have gone on to their reward.

POST-CROATIAN DAY REUNION
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th
honor our worthy and deserving pioneer-founders, as well
as all of our other members, our dear ones who passed on
since the founding of the Union.
The Solemn Meeting of the Supreme Board in com
memoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Croatian Fra
ternal Union, will be open to all members of the Society. As
on that same day will be celebrated the 23rd Annual Cro
atian Day in Kennywood Park, under the auspices of En
glish-Speaking Lodges of Western Pennsylvania, we expect
great numbers of our members from near and far to visit
us and attend the observances being held on that day.
The Supreme Office of the Croatian Fraternal Union
will be open from eight o'clock in the morning for the recep
tion of visitors. The officers and office staff will be on hand
to show the various departments of our offices.
All members of the committee of United Lodges of
Western Pennsylvania, under whose auspices, together with
the Executive Board, the celebration of the 60th Anniver
sary of the CFU was held in West View Park on July 25th,
are invited to attend the Special Meeting of the Supreme
Board.
The Committee for the Croatian Day in Kennywood
Park is likewise invited to attend this Special Meeting, upon
adjournment of which we will be able to proceed to St. Paul's
Cathedral in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, where a
Solemn High Mass will be served at 11:00 A. M. for the
repose of the souls of all deceased members of the Croatian
Fraternal Union, at the request of the Croatian Day Com
mittee. The Cathedral is less than a mile from the CFU
Supreme Office, about a ten-minute walk.

Nearing $60,(KM) Goal
With the date of the cele
bration, Sunday, September
5, just around the corner, the
United Lodges Committee is
now concentrating on its goal
of signing $60,000.00 in in
surance to present the So
ciety as a 60th Anniversary
gift.
At last reports, the Com
mittee was confident it would
attain this mark. However,
every bit of business in the
remaining days will help and
we appeal to our members in
and around South Chicago to
turn in their share at once.
We need the support of all.
In the meantime, make cer
tain you are among the many
who are planning to attend
this pre-Labor Day salute to
the greatest organization of
its kind in the world.

Guard the Peace
This year, on September 1,
the nation ends its ninth year
of freedom from war.
That it remains a rather
uneasy freedom should not
detract from the significance
of this V-J day. For the
world still is holding on to
the peace that was signed,
sealed and delivered on Sep
tember 1,1945.
It was on that day that
American and Japanese offi
cers gathered on the deck of
the Battleship Missouri in
Tokyo bay to sign the articles
of surrender.
It was then that Americans
flung themselves into a joy
ful frenzy of celebration over
the brand new peace.
Today the hysterical hap
piness that overlay the end
ing of the war is gone.
What remains is something
better: A deep, abiding re
solve to hold firmly to the
peace that was so desperately
won.
Detroit Nest 318 Mothers' Club Set
For Youth Program Of First Magnitude
Detroit, Mich. On Sun
day, August 22, the members
of the Junior Nest 318 Moth
ers' Club held a family out
ing at Teeple Lake, Pontiac.
With games for the kids and
general fun for the grown
ups, swimming and eats for
all, we had a great time.
We're sorry that more of
our members didn't show up
for the event, but those of us
who did get together had a
wonderful time in each other's
company.
The August meeting of the
Mothers' Club brought to the
forefront a world of ideas and
plans for the Fall season.
First among these is a re
newal of the kolo classes. Our
dance director, Kay Kosovec,
is eager to get started, in fact
almost as eager as the chil
dren are to get bkek in the
shuffling groove.
Since the humidity is due
for a downward swing short
ly, we feel that we can re
sume classes on the second
Friday in September, at the
Lodge Hall, 1735 E. McNich
ols.
So, the next two kolo
clasess wil take place on Sep
tember 5 0th and 24th, or the
second and fourth Fridays of
the month. We will issue not
ices from time to time as re
minders of the kolo classes,
but it is important for you
parents to keep in mind that
these are held regularly on
these days, at 7:00 PM.
Also, Juniors will bowl at
the Bowlwood Alleys, Wood
ward at the Boulevard (the
Michigan Bank Building) on
Saturday afternoons at 2:00
PM. If you are interested in
junior bowling, or if you
mothers want your chidren to
bowl, a good way to expend
their excess energies, call

be assured of a place on a
team. Don't forget to call!
The Mothers' Club first
fall social event will be the
Card Party scheduled for
September 30, 8:00 PM, at
the Lodge Hall. As before,
Young Farrell Nest 190 Tamburitzans
Make Debut Sunday, September 19
Farrell, Pa. A debut of
our young tamburitza ensem
ble, comprised of eleven boys
and six young ladies all mem
bers of our Junior Nest 190,
will be held when they pre
sent a Concert on Sunday,
September 19, at the Croatian
Home, Staunton Street. The
program is scheduled to begin
promptly at 2:30 PM.
These youngsters, who de
cided to organize in a musical
aggregation last spring range
between the ages of eleven
and sixteen years. Under the
leadership of bro. F. C. Koss,
they have absorbed a suffi
cient amount of musical
knowledge in a very short
time and are definitely pre
pared to demonstrate their
skill at this event.
To add color to the pro
gram, Mrs. Purich and Mrs.
Prezgaj have volunteered to
outfit the entire ensemble in
national costumes. We might
point out here that the
youngsters are not only in
strumentalists, but are equal
ly versed in singing and kolo
dancing, too.
The American-Croatian Cit
izens Club purchased the in
struments which the young
musicians have, while bro.
Steve Lenardich made the
music stands.
As one can readily see, our
colony is very interested in
promoting this group to the
very limit.
Featured on our program
as guests will be bro. Philip
Vukelich, Croatian Editor of
the "Zajedničar," and his as
sistant, John Bronich, our
former Lodge member. They
will address the audience
briefly with greetings.

the choice of games to play
is entirely up to you. There's
prizes for winners and, in
some cases, prizes for the
losers.
Refreshments will be pro
vided by the Mothers' Club.
Those of you who can't play
cards, or don't want to play
cards, don't let this stop you
from coming down and join
ing the fun. There are other
games to play, also.
We'd ike to see as many of
you at these card parties as
possible, since a successful
turnout at the party insures
successful operation of our
Nest in its activities.
We are sure that you moth
ers and fathers With children
in Nest 318 want your chil
dren to have fun at our sea
sonal parties. The best way to
insure the continued success
of our Nest, and the contin
ued social events which have
been so much entertainment
for the children in the past,
is to join the Mothers' Gub
which meet on the first
Thursday of the month, and
join in its activities.
