Serious Cluwgc.—The Postmaster at Philadelphia
has been charged with opening and reading letters ad
dressed to Vice President Dallas and others ; re sealing
them so clumsily (hat the trick was discovered. '1 he
Postmaster denies it, and asks a suspension of public o
piniwn until the investigation, which has been ordered
by the r.islmarter General, shall Lo made.

Portsmouth (N. II.) Journal that the whole amount of
revenue received at the custom house at that port, from

a new proposition, in its April number. It is to shorten

proposition is n U hig doctrine, and wc arc gratified to
fiod it adopted by a leader in the Loro loco rank*. This,
indeed, is the fatal cancer in o ar system, and we will co
operate heartily with any party in its eradication. Wc
cannot, however, s«» readily assent to the other feature
ol the suggestion. Indeed, we wt old rather prefer as

;• In Louisiana, a Convention is now in session,
and has been h r some weeks, rent Celling the Slate
('(institution. Among the propositions win eh have been
r• jot ted, w as one making the* Judg-a periodically elec
live by the people. It was rejected by the decisive* volt
of l'l l » ^1. Tho pernicious efforts of a similar provi
si .ri in the neighboring Statu of Mississippi, are too obvi
ous to render such a preposition palatable to their next
door neighbor. The theory is very pretty — hut the
practice* is destructive to the purity of the Judiciary, as
wi ll as that independence of popular passion and preju
dice which is essential to the efficient administration of
justice,and constitutes the surest safeguard of the weak
against the strong.

tisement of Mr. Tutwilcr, relative to the celebrated
McCormick Helpers. We have no experimental
knowledge of their utility ourselves, but they are spoken
