From the American Former. Work for Hie tlonili. APRIL—CULTURE OF CORX. • Com Planting.—The limeTor commen cing this work differs so much in our ex paiuM country, that it is impossible to fix upon any particular period that would be universally proper; for although the corn is already up and flouting its luxuriant fo liage to the breeze, in many of the states in which our journal circulates, it will not be time in others to plant for some weeks. Even in our own state, no particular day can be set down as tho proper one; for VUch is the effect produced by a few leagues •f location, that a difference of several Weeks exists as to the proper time for plant-1 ing, in remote points of our own limits.— Bnt although it may he considered too eerly for planting over a vast range of country, it is full time everywhere for far mers and planters who cultivate this crop, to be looking about them for manure to grow it. with; for really it is folly, unless one's soil is realiy rich in organic as well i as inorganic elements, to expect a large crop of corn, without giving it plenty of! manure. The very structure and size of tho plants—their habits and rapid growth —would tell us that such is the fact,- if costly experience had not long since con vinced all observing corn-growers of the truth of what we here affirm. Without j tho element* to form the grain out of—to sustain the stalk in its wholeness, and ena ble it to elaborate and perfect its seed—be in dm soil, disappointment must necessarily follow every attempt to grow large, or •ven comparatively profitable crops ol, •Corn. If what we aflirtn be true, and we : believe every candid, thinking farmer, will My that it is, then it should be the duty of •very one, who desires to make corn growing a profitable business, to make the accumulation of manure a chief principle in his system of farming. It is not suffi cient for any one to say, that he has not the time to devoie to such objects—for it is « like Ilia interest, end bis duty, to take the time. On many farms—especially tlime having the advantage of w ater front—the materials for making manure are so abun dant, that it would be an object to keep a hand and team the vear round, engaged in collecting them. On such estates, sub nance* are to be found, in such abundance, that it would seem to be a sin, not to a »ail ono’a-aelf of their enriching properties, •a there can be no question, but that Prov idence placed them there, ihnt man might be induced to appropriate them to the uses of bis crops. \Ve were on a w - it I;.*! summer at a friend's whose estate fronts dtebay shore, and Creeks making out of it, j (or upwards of two miles. His shores Ware lined at different points, with tliou aand of loads of the very best kinds of ma terials of composting into manures; and yet be had never used any of them; auj the only reason he hod to give, was, that he could not spare the time necessary to uolluct them, aa if the time and labor which might he thus appropriated, would uot re sult in more profit to him, than any ether •mae and labor to be bestowed on bis lurin. Wa left him with the promise, that lie! would sat his hands to collecting and com posting them the following fall. If ho did *o, we should like to hear what results they may produce on his crops the pres- ! •at season. If he followed our advice, as to the mode of composting the rough ma terials on his shores, with ashes and plus ter.or with barn-yard manure and plaster, we feel very sure, that the effects will so tell upon the products of his corn crop, the present year, as to make him a beibvrr j te the faith which teaches, that the first | dety of a tiller of the soil, is to accumulate SMuiure. Neither man nor beast can effec- j lively labor, unless he be well fed, so is it ! with the soil—unlesss the substances ah- j st reeled in the growing of crops, he re-1 placed—be re-,upplied— exhaustion, im* j poveriabment, must be the inevitable con- j sequence. In this replacement, and re- ' •apply, one need not be so very choice in ! his selection, forall animal—all vegetable j bodies —may be usefully and profitably, putio the compost heap, if you apply the proper tractn to excite fermentation and decay. One load of barn-yard or stable manure, if it be good—if it shall have been preperly taken care of—or 5 bushels of asms, will be sufficient to convert two loads of marsh, river or creek mud, or Wood's-mould and leaves, or ditch or road acrapings, or the earth from head-lands, or Cmca corners and sides, into gooj manure. To every twenty loads of such materials, •M bushel of plaster, or from 2 to 5 bush- ■ •k of salt, whichever he the most conve Itient or economical, should he added.— Over every layer of the coarse material, plAAter, salt, or charcoal dust, should be spread, as the compost heaps are bein<y termed, to arrest and economise the vola tile principles of the substances, us they may be elaborated by the procesbes of the I decay of the rough materials; for in all the eubstances we have named, and all others ofa kindred natuie. there are large percen tage* of nitrogenous matters—large per centages of those elements which, under tbe operation of decomposition, generate •***Ui that substance which gives to Guano ao much of its active virtues—so ■neb of its agricultural value. We do not Wish to be Understood ns desiring to j convey the idea, that, in the production of the substances named by us, have anything ®V*the same quantities in their compose j tma, as are to be found in Guano; for such fc anther our belief, nor our object; but, if A® (juintities named by us, they ' willadkWef fully as well, as do the ordina- j ry dressings of Guano given to an acre of' laad. We believe,, that 20 double-horse-1 Cert load* ofcotnpost, prepared as we have [ directed, wonld impart equal present hen- ] efc, aa would a dressing of 2, 3 or 400 lbs. I ef guano; while ite effects, in the mol.ora-1 taaeof the soil, would be much longer con- j tUMMd. We ere aware, that the collect Materials, and the formation of eoMnoet heaps will occopv con ■iiimUMhis Be it even so; for time and i ■ewywimot be better applied and ex-1 paMfad. We know situations, where one ■H and a team cou Id collect t wenty loads fat * day, which would, with the additions haw named, manure an acre of land •a thaa ita yield would be double,—and t e*««inly. no one will question the profita Maneaa ef such result While ere are upon tbe subject of mate •■h far fanning manure, we desire to iin value of one upon our renders, I * | that aloiOat every body neglect*,—and ■ however distasteful its name may sound upon the delicate ears of some, tve will name it; for, as no one need be ashamed of telling the truth, so should no one, who feels an interest in tlia w elfare of the Agri cultural community, permit any false no tions of delicacy or taste, to deter him from proclaiming a great agricultural truth.— VV e allude then, to the Urine made about the homestead and quarters. Is it saved? But.it should be, and may be, with out much labor, and with but very little expenae. Having apnken of Urine, it be hooves ua to slate the elements of which it consists. According to Berzelies, 1000 lbs. of hu man urine consists of the following sub stances, in the quantities named:— Urea*.30.00 lbs.
