POETRY._ From Eliza Cook's Journal The Deck of the “Oatwartf Round.” How seldom wo dream of the mariner’s grave, Far down l»y the coral strand ; How little we think of the wind and wave. When all we love are on land. The hurricane comes and the hurricane goes, And little the heed we lake, Though the tree may snap as the tempest blows, And the walls of our homestead shake. But the north-east gale tells a different tale, With a voice of fearful sound, When a loved owe is under a close-reefed sail, On the deck of an “outward hound.” How wistfully then we look on the night, As the threatening clouds go by— As the wind gets up and the last fain: light Is dying away in the sky. How we listen and ga/.e with a silent lip, And judge by the bonding tree, How tliesamo wild gust mu«t toss the ship, Ami rouse the mighty sea. Ah, sadly, then do we meet the day. When the signs of storms are found, And pray for the loved one fir away. On the deck of an “outward bound.” There is one that I cherished when hand in hand We roam o’er the lowland and lea! And I thought my love for that one on land Was earnest as love could be. But now that he hath gone out on the tide, l find that I worship the more; And think ibownters deep and wide, As I bask on the flowers on shore. 1 have watched the wind, I have watched the stars, And shrunk from the tempest sound: For my heart-strings are w: -athci’d with the slender spars * That carry the “outward bound.” 1 have slept when the zeyphr forgot to creep And the sky was without a fiown, But I started soon from that fretful sleep, With the dream of a ship going down. I have snt in the field when the corn was in shock, And the reaper’s hook w is bright. But my fanry conjured the breaker and rock. In the dead of a moonless night. Oh! I never will ima<ure affection again. While treading earth’s flowery mound, But wait till the loved one is on the main, O i the deck of an “outward bound.” TIIlM'EEEAAKOtS. FOR THE VIRGINIAN. Fruit Trees. This is not the season for transplanting. It is however, the time of year in which persons, generally .from the North, go through the coun try engaging fruit trees, to be delivered in the fall. A few remarks on trees generally, will not be therefore inappropriate on the present occa sion. A tree is a living thing, and it is furnished wiih various means of sustaining life. The root :s the source through which it receives fowl from the ground, and it is also, the medi um through which it obtains moisture from the earth. The leaves act as longs to the plant, and through those necessary appendages, light and heat mo received. The trunk and branches are covered with bark which protects tho tree from cold, fee., as well as prevent tho escape of sup. If the root of a tree be cutoff, the tree will die, because, it is deprived of obtaining its food from tbe earth, and if the branches be cut t,fi, or the body of the tree be bruised, or mutilated, besides tho injury which it at tho time receives, when the sap starts much of it escapes from the affected parts. When trees are taken from the earth to be transplanted, the roofs should be disturbed as little as possible, rind if left out of the ground in an exposed con dition too long, death is tbe inevitable conse quence. Therefore to grow vigorous trees, they should have original health, and when dug up, the roots should he as little damaged as possible, and the trees in all their parts be as little maimed and bruised as possible, and w hat is still of equal if not of greater impor tance, tltey should not be suffered to remain out of the ground long, and never should they bo exposed both root and branch to the influences of the sun and drying w inds. Trees which are hawked about the country by pedlars, ere generally deficient in every thing essential to vigorous and healthy trees.— They arc commonly deprived of at least half their roots as w ell as bruised and scarred by rough n ml careless handling and in the third place, they have been out of the ground so long a nil so much exposed,* that usually not more than half of them live at all; and we doubt not but those which do live, never recover from thp effects of passing through so severe an ordeal. Persons » ishirig to purchase would do well to to consider these facts. !■ rtini tie- Vienna Ciirreapimiieiit ul the London Times The Fssmily of kossulh. It having been found impossible to establish a eise against Mesdames Meezlenyi and Rutt kay, they have been liberated, and are now re siding in the Hotel National, in the Leopold sladt. The Austrian government has at length come to the conclusion that nothing is to be gained by detaining Kossuth’s relations here, and accordingly the whole family—some sev enteen persons, 1 believe—will be permitted to quit this conntrv on the 1st May. Aspeo plc hero can never do anything with a o-ood grace, difficulties have been raised about the servants, w ho were willing to go with tfie emi grants. The authorities insist on tho Kossuth family emigrating alone, which, in my opinion, is most unreasonable, as there are four females and eleven children of the party. Prom a per fectly creditable source, I learn that Madame Moszenlyi, who is said to have as much moral courage as all the rest of her family put to gether, completely baflldd all the attempts of the authorities to extract any isformalion of consequence from her. The military judge (auditor) to whom the case was entrusted, dic tated a protocol purporting to be a recapitu lation oi the admissions made by the defend ants, and Madame Meszlcnyi was instructed to aign it. ’Never,’ cried the spirited woman, in Sign mat which, though not positively false, is not perfectly true. Ret me dictate the protocol, which I am well able to do, and then 1 will willingly sign it.’ Jus tice require* that f should state that Kossuth’s sisters were kndly treated during their impris onment, and that their mother’* letters to them were duly delivered, after having been read by the authorities, to whose safe keeping they were entrusted. The old lady admonished her children to take courage and te remain firm, ‘as the sun must rise at last, bo the night ever so dark and long? This, I have reason to be lieve, is tho sense, if not the literal translation of a phrase contained in one of the hitters de livered into the hands of the prisoners. As Madame Kossuth and her family will not be permitted to come lu re, they will meet with Mesdatnes Mcszlenyi and Ruttkay somewhere on the road to Bed-uibach.’ Mbs. Clay—We take tho following ex tract from one of Col. Forney’s “Glance, at Congr**, published in the Pennsylvanian: Do y?u h"'v that Mrs. Henry Clay ha. never v,sued Washington! Her domestic char! acter seems to have been formed for the quiet shades of Ashland; anu tho’ her woman’s heart beat high when she saw “youn" Harry with his beaver on,” in the midst of the greatest events that have made his name immortal, yet by her the blessings of home and of fires'ide were to be preferred. Now that ihe statesman Is wasting away, her presence would alleviate his sufferings and prepare him fur his final reck oning. But now she is too old to come. She could not bear the toilsome journey from Lex ington, and she remains as it were a watcher for the fatal news. A few days ago, she sent bim a boquet of flo wers; but when they reached here they were faded—a melancholy evidence that both tho giver and the receiver were fast hastening to that bourne whence no traveller returns. The old man eloquent held it to lii<> lips for a lew seconds, and said with mournful %pathos. “the perfume is almost gone! ’ But not so with his fame. That will live forever green in the mem ory of man. His physical frame will decay, but his great history will never b© forgotten. “AUCTION AND PRIVATE SALES. Improved by RICH & CO., his failed to preserve its contents in the fiercest fire. New York, December 20 1851. Messrs. Stearns & Marvin, successors to llic h & Co.. No. 14f>. Water street. New York: Sirs :—\\ lien the fire was < onsnming mv place of hu sines*. No, 21G Pearl street, 1 was absent in Renn-elear county, testing a new cleaning apparatus in connection with my Excelsior Thre-her, and did not read the ac count until I was fearful it was loo late to save myhoo!. s. which were placed in one of your Safes, purchased of M r Marvin some year ago. My fears were not allayed when I found it nee ssary upon my return to apply the Croton water 40 hours before I was enabled to commence op erations: after which it required fifty-four hours of labor and application of water to raise the Salamander from its ashy bed. You may judge of my anxiety during this delay, and my agreeable surprise upon opening the Safe in the presence of a number of gentlemen to find my books and papers saved, and as legible ns they w ere previous to the fire. The intense heat to which the Safe was subjected, can be conjectured from the condition of another safe, (not a Salamander.) of which an iron skeleton frame only remained, and not a vestigeofa book. They were companions in the same office, on the second floor, from which they fell upon crutes of earthenware in the cellar, the ruined Safe upon the Salamander. If their position bad been reversed, not even the skeleton would have remained. My’ loss over the insurance is $1,900, yet the salvation of my books in your Salaman der with the representatives of upwards of$100.000, and important documents which could not be duplicated, has fully compensated me It will afford me great pleasure to exhibit the new Safe purchased of you, and explain its merits, at my present office No 251 Pearl street, where 1 shall remain until the new building No. 216 is erected.
