tile drama, expended a considerable sum in repairing tin
lutenur, alter which the leasees took the matter iu hand
and are tiuishiiig up the work iu elegant style. Mr. R D
Moniliii, wluate skill in stage mechanism cannot he ex
celled,'ih laboring assiduously to have eieiything ship
shape by the time of the opening. The walla have been
newly papered, by Mr. J. K. Regnaulf, aud hare quite a

“Voyage of Lite,” a splendid picture, and highly appro

A Cutt.li Attacrkii bt Rats.—tin Wednesday night
last a negro wo.-iiaii in the aervice of Dr. K. B. Chevtiiny,
left her inlaid cnild in the cradle in the kitchen, and was
ab*cnt for some time. When she relumed she found that
the child had been mucked by rata, and iu Beall eaten
from both anui to the bone, and also a part of iu leg* de
voured in tlie same way. The cries of Die child were
beard by neighbors, but of course they thought iu mother

corder notices a batch of new counterfeit notes on the
Bank of Commerce, in that place. The counterfeits were
of tlie denomination of #5 and easily to be delected from
au almost enti'0 want of similarity to the genuine. In
addition the signature of the Cashier is spelt Hirudon in
stead ol llcindon.

Long Train—On Saturday evenings train of forty eight
freight car* come in over the Fiederickaburg road, drawn
by tlie locomotive GusUvus A. Mvcrs. The train exten
ded the length of two squares, and was laden with pro

of the prosperity of thu road.

A Giri. in Man’s Ai-parki. —A girl, who gave her name
as Elizabeth Davis, lias been rutting up shines in the
good city of Lynchburg, arrayed in the habiliments of a
■nun. She was arrested last Thursday night, hut released
on so'enmly promising to reform her “ haliita.”

eon* were baptised in the canal, below Trent's old bridge,
by the Rev. Jere. Porter. An immense number of persons
assembled to witness the cerainony, and the scene was al

rainy day ns any we ever read of. From morning until

, InjObso.—Mr. Hugh Ulhain, of Alexandria, was
thrown Iroiu a baggage wagon, last Friday, and badly in
jured. At last accounts, howaver, he was in a fair way of

ArPRSHKsnio—Three slaves, men, runaways, were ap
prehended near Bloomer* Furnace, in Hampshire county,on
Friilay evening. They were armed and made considera
ble resistance, but were compelled to surrender.

aome time since had seven of his slaves to run off, has

in that city, on Thurday last His death was caused by a
violent hemorrhage from the lungs.
