significance if we turn to sums ol the details. Let as se
parate the old States, or the larger portion of tbs Atlan
tic States, from the residua. Take for example New Eng
land, New Yak, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware,

We thus see that in twelve of the old Atlantic States
all domestic animals have diminished ia numbers. But
the population has not diminished. Ou the contrary, the
population of these twelve 9tates has increased at a rapid
rate during this period. 1
Let us now turn to the region of oouatry which sus
tains the markets ol Cincinnati, Louisville and St. Louis,
and which embraces by tar the largest part of the surpiua
producing State*. This is composed of Ohio, Indians, Il
linois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri. The progress
of animal production in these six Staten during the period
from 1840 to I860, was as follows :

The population of these Stales increased 26 per cent.—
Hut neither cattle nor swioo increased over 2U per cent.
These tables, prepared with care, show the remarkable
'-ct we have stated, that the domestic animals, eapecally
cattle and hogs, are not increasing with the same rapidity
aa the population, and in many ol the States are positively
retrograding.
Bat while this is the fact, the exportation of animal
products has more than trebled In the last twenty years.
We thus have the double process of a diminished produc
tion and an increassd exportation. Thus the demand is
fast growing on the supply, and there can result no other
consequence than what we see in the rise of prices. Thin
condition is permanent, at least for many years, for it can
only be corrected by the rise of pricas to a point high
eoougb to diminish consumption. The process,
(via ; the tnrrrnteof the nan producing population aa
compared with the producing,) bee beau going on in Eu
rope, so that prices are alweye high euougb in London to
permit exportation from this country. The result is, that
the export of food from this country, both cereal and ani
mal, has increased at a moat rapid rata. The export of
food from this country in 1856-4, was greater in value
than in any previous year. The average export ol bread
stuff* and provisions from the United States, arranged in
periods of five yaort, ware aa follows:

table in one sense, it makes every man. not a cultivator

induce a larger portion of Ihe people to become hueband

and adding to tba mass ol consumers instead of prodacers.

prices, diminish the production, and increase the con
saasptioo of food. How long this can last, without ssrioua
detriment to society, mnaina to be seen. A few years will
