Maslin, of Moorefield, Hardy county, Virginia. He says
that from six Japan peas sent him in 1854. which were
not cultivated iu a way to give much hope ol' success the
product firat aeaaon .as 7,850, or an average of 1,225 to
each stalk. The next year he planted two ounce* ol the
beans, jnany ol which wero destroyed in Iheir groeth t>«

“They grow up iu a stiff stalk about the size of a man's
finger, and throw out branches from the ground up • and
every branch is completely covered «ith pods, which con

a flour barrel. When green they are about the size and
atiApo of a corn bean. I counted some sulks this fall that
lud 2,5110 to 8,000 peas, and have seen as much as one
hundred pods upon braurhe* not a foot long. I have no
doubt but ihey will yield live times a. much per aero as

imprudent and indiscreet persons have been known by

Accident on Tn« Ccntbal Hailboad.—1The mail train
which left this city on Christmas morning, came in colli
eion with the inward (rain, at arurveof the road, between
Melton a turu-out and Ourdonsville. Both trains were
considerably damaged by the concussion, and seversl ns
grocs in the train from (iordonsvi Iu were badly injured
One of them, we learn, has since died. None of the white
passengers wero hurt. The accident, if the collision may
be so termed, was caused by the detention of the inward
tram. The conductor believing that ho could reach the
turn-out within the limit ol time prescribed by the com
P*UJ - iulcs, proceeded on, while the conductor of th«*
other train, having waited hi* allotted ti.nr, and auppofing
thst tho road would be clear, also directed the engineer
^o go ahead, and hence the collision, which, providenliailr
has not been attended with very serious rouseuiuonoes —
The locomotives were both disabled end several ears
damaged, but the h»s to the company will prove ineon
•iderablo. There must have been culpability somewhere,
or the collision would not have happened, and should the
reported death of the negro be true, we trust ilw.

the causes of the disaster.
