A FIRST VISIT TO JKliDO.
While our noble old ship, the Powhatan, was lying in
the Woosung liver, eight or ten miles below Shanghai,
Commodore Tatnall received orders from the Secretary
ol the Navy to take the two Japanese ministers home via
Panama, the Mississippi, which had been appointed for
this service, having been out beyond her time, and being
at on.e ordered home. Oar cruise will be considerably
prolonged by this arrangement, since we must wait till
February 2dd (or the Japanese ministers, while besides
this, ih.* ju.ss.ige round toe Horn is about two months
longer than by the Cape of Good Hop.*.
It was necessary for our Commodore to run up to
Jcddo at once to ascertain whether the ministers would
go as hud been stipulated, as tumors were current and
credited generally, that the whole bug tulked-of afl'uir
would be a failure and a farce. Accordingly, September
18th. leaving the Woosung, our course was laid lor Na
gasaki, which we reached in three days. Many faces
were bright with smiles, while the courteous and grace
ful obcisanct—alow bow with the hands touching the

changed all around! Fifteen foreign vessels were an

Hou. Mr. Ward accepted Commodore Tatnall's invita
tion to accompany him to Jcddo. Wednesday, Oct. 5,
leaving Yoko-homa, and rouudiug along point which se
parates Jcddo from Kauagawa, this great city for the
iir-t time broke upon our vision; and anchoring at three
o’clock P. M.. about I miles from the shore, eveiy one
was impatient to put his foot upon the .-oil, and explore,
examine, and see i learly what now, through the fogs, and
clouds, and trees, he »iw daikly.
\l". Ward had made his arrangements to call at once
upon Mr. Harris, our tir.-t Minister to Japan, whose 11
hor- have been so houorable to his country, and useful
to Japan and the civilized world. It was fitting, how
ever, that he should not leave the ship us a piivatc indi
vidual. He was the American Minister to China, and as
such -houid be honored in the sight of the Japanese Gov
ernment and people. Accordingly, when he left the ship
the yards were all maimed, and .seventeen report- Irom
the heavy gnus of th** Powhatan, toiling over these
smooth and'juiot waters, and dying away among the
groves and hills which give to the city the air of a forest,
must have awakened memories of the old volcanoes for
which this country is noted.

A mile octorc the town was a line of five forts, built
upon a .-and bar. on which a sixth, as I obs?rved, was in
proec.-sof construction. They are larg- and well con
structed, as gentlemen of the military p ofessiou assure
me, ihe wail- being of brown giatiite, without cement,
and Igor 15 feet b:gh. Some pieces of cannon were
seen without coming, and others were protected and
screened by mull houses, under which they are placed,
while not a soldier was to be seen, and the preen grass
luxuriating from side to side over the entire plutlorm,
which contained acres in each fort, reminds me of Pan
rather than ot the g<-J of war.
They were beautiful rather than-terrible; like little is
lands of this inland se t, tin own up by the Creator for the
happiness ot life and the adornment of this fair portion
of our earth ; not tor the work ot ini-erv and destruc
tion. Then turn wo to the shipping. Jeddo is not yet
opened to commerce, and therefore no for* 1 ot merchant
vessels are to b ■ en there ; but I counted mbit at Yoko

ed port, as J. . lo will be in 1 '53, the Japanese govern
ment having wisely decided that it would be perilous and
injurious to open all tbe ports at once. Where an in

must be a training of numerous oflicial* as interpreters
and custom-house oflieers and others, a. well as of the
people themselves.
In this we see the good common sense of the.Japanese,
who p isistently refused larg. r tone, ssions at the time,
though coaxed and urged by newly r.rrived outsiders ;
while in the same fact is seen the assurance of f iture
prudence and justice. Two small steam.-rs, tinned with
eight or ten guns, were lying in port, otlicercd and man
a d entirely by J.»pane-e, though not built bv them, one
being a present trout the i,*ueen of England, and the oth
er built in Holland by order of the Japanese Government.
Three -loops wete anchored near them, built after Euro
pean models, and unarm, d so far a-- could be seen, while
about I'M* large junks, with a single must of great size,
resembling the trunk of a forest tree cut off thirty feet
above its roots, were anchored indifferent parts of the
harbor, and probably above live hundred fishing boats,
o ' diflerehl sixes spreading their white sails, or propelled
b» oat.-, were matured over this put of the bay, giving
to it natural beauty the addition of th»t of art,and the in
terest created by the presence of human intelligence and
activity. Probably a thousand ot thsse fishing boats are
scattered over this inland sheet of water.
The uc\t day after anchoring, the Commodore went
on shore with his tiag I.ieuleuant and your corres|>ond
etit. amidst a drenching ram, which continued for three
d iv - aud night- without cessation and almost without
abatement. A solid wall is built up about eight feet high
along the beach in front of tbe city, and close up to the
long street which winds for g*» miles along the crescent
shore, but without wh uves or jetties, (lights ot stone
»teps being constructed in several pieces lor ascent and
descent, while often a plank lowered down into a bout is
the only and uncomfortable substitute. The good con
dition of this wall is admirable; in its whole extent not
one break is to be seen; not one stone is displaced. Tbe
impression nude by the forts and the wall along this
great heath «f more than twenty miles extent, without
anv sight of the city, is that of tiigh civilization and art.

on wfiat meets the eye as it turns in different directions,
tlie first feeling is that ot disappointment,—the houses
are so unlike in size and elegance to what he had ex
pected to find them, and the -econd feeling is that of ut
wr bewilderment, as fie sees eveiywhcre tall trees and
groves and thick undergrowth, while hills rise here and
there of considerable size and elevation, all shrouded in
a mass of luxuriant vegetation—bills as rural and rough
as any to be seen in a country town in New England aud
New York, which human foot seems never to have ap
prnaclic I. or tiie hand to have touched.
It was in the midst of a city larger in territory a 4
regulation than London, and yet stemel to tie in a/*-. -
at! That feeling is the one first awakened, and wander
where om* will, aud as long as he will, it is only deepeu

is a law, or custom, which amounts to the same thing with
the Japauesc, that every mail is bound to leave on his
grounds as many trees as lie found, and if lie cuts one
down, to plaut another in its place, lienee the forest
eitv. Some groves covered acres, and were in the most
I perfect state of nature, while in other placis, however
I thick the trees were planted, and deep the shade they
I cast, among them were to be s “on neat houses and tine
gardens, and tiie most elegant shrubs dwaifed, and their
branches trimmed into the most fanciful forms.

a half. Commodore Tati.all and his Flag Lieutenant took
a 'iugle uorimou, a sort of chair like a box, with mats
ou the iKjuoin, and suspended from a beam which tests
on the shoulders of two or four men, as circumstances
mav require. As for myself, I chose to walk and see,
however the rain poured; and crossing from streitto
street, all of which cross at right angles, wandering
amidst groves, looking into the shops which line the
streets and tilled with the eurio-ites of Japanese art,
jostling amidst the crowds, but always pushing onwards,
we reached the height of a considerable hill, w hen there
instantly burst upon the eye the imperial castle, the mas
sive amt vast palaces of the Dainties, or gr.-af princes of
the empire, all located outside of the walls of the imperi
al castle, while temples crowned the height of hills
amidst the solemn shade of trees, and groves were seen
like native toiests in other directions, and a commit ru
ble river slowly wound its way in another, and wide
street- stretched away in straight lines beyond the
reach of the eye. At once all the first impression was
effaced, aud i felt that 1 was i:i the midst of an immense
and magnificent city—magnificent, uot in splendid houses
md palaces, and stores, and paved streets, and pu! 1 c
works of art like Parks aud Home, and London, but n ag
n ttcent in thut nature which the Japanese have contriv
e I to preserve in the midst of so much art aud such an

A Brahyix’s Accoc.vtof ms Cocxtrt.—The Itev. Mr.
GangooD, a converted Brahmin, now travelling iu this
country, delivered, in New Bedford, a lew nights ago, a
lecture ou the manners and customs of the people of
India.
Mr. Gangoolv said that the manners and customs of
Hindoo life tad always been the subject of much specu
lation, and travellers and even missionaries had given to
the world inaccurate accounts ot the peop.e ot India.—
He had been requested to prepare a work upon his coun
try, and be has already done his part of the work, and
It «u In the handa of the Rev. Mr. Ellis, of Charlestown,
and would Foon l>n published. The paste system was ex
plained at some length. The Hindoos were divided into
t'.irty-four easts, of which the Hrnhmin reaehed the
highest, and the banker, goldsmith and shoemaker were
among the lowest. The blacksmith is of a high caste,
because of his usefulness. If a Brahmin eats animal
food he les’s his ea-te, which he can never regain. The
subject of birth was next treated. The birth of a male
child was always made the occasion of great rejoicing,
wl.il? tho birth of a female child was hardly noticed.—
The mother of live or six girls was always the subject of
scorn and derision, and never went into society.
There were but three castes in India thatcouid not read
or write. The strictest attention is given to the educa
tion of t oys in India, while girls never go to school.—
The discipline of Brahmin life in some Instances was
grand. A Brahmin rises as early ns five o'clock, walks
out and gathers flowers, and bathes before the sun rise?;
if the sutt sees one ol this class in bed, the fourteen gein
r itions of his ancestors will bo punished in eternity.—
Women must bathe every morning before they go into
the kitchen; if they do not people, will not eat their cook
ing. Brahmins must keep silent while at the table ; if
they speak tvnile eating, they are obliged to go without
food the entire day.
The marriage system was next considered. Hindoos
do not know, striutly, what marriages are. Neither the
boys or the girls have anything to do with this matter.
Barents make all matches, and the parlies have no idea
to whom they are to unite their destinies until they ar
rive at the altar. The marriageable age of gills is from
seven to ten. mill that of boys from thirteen to twenty
five. A girl at thirteen years of age, unmarried, is eott
-idered an old maid past all redemption.
In regard to the burial ceremonies of the dead in In
dia, many things bail been said anil written bv travellers
that were untrue. Tlte burning of the bodies of widows
upon funeral piles of the husband was explained and ue
conuted for by the fact that when a woman’becomes n
widow she must always remain in that situation, and they
weie never thought anything ot or treated respectfully,
andniinr of them,in view of these facts, preferred death.
This custom h is, said the speaker, been recently abol
ished by the British government.
