DR. HUNTIR ON BRONOHITI&
To the Editor of the Whip:
The term Bronchitis has hitherto been commonly ap
plied to diseases of the throat, and medical writers have
confirmed this popular error. The windpipe, at its eu
trauce into the lungs, divides itself into two branches,
and these are tbe beginning of the “ Bronchial Tubes,”
one of which enters the right lung, the other the left,
when each subdivides itself iuto innumerable smaller
tubes, like the branches of a tree, ramifying through the
whole internal substance of the lungs, and ending iu lit
tle clusters or cavities, called “Air Cells.” When I speak
of Bronchitis, therefore, I speak of a disease of the
lungs, and not of the throat, as has been too coinmouly
supposed.
Bronchitis is a di-ease of tbe lining or mucous mem
brane of the Bronchial tubes. This lining is very sensi
tive, and hence liable to become irritated by sudden
ehauges of weather, by impure air, by the fine particles
of matter which till the atmosphere of workshops, or
which float upon the wind in dirty cities—by the hun
dred irritating causes which meet us in almost every
place. This irritatiou deranges its healthy action, changes
the character of it# secretions, and sets tip a train of
symptoms to which we apply the name of “ Bronchitis."
In Chronic Bronchitis there is sometimes slight fever
towards evening. The patient does retain his wouted
strength or flesh, but become a little paler. He expert*
dices a KhcrtoeiH oj breath on exercising, and has a
slight but continued sense of oppression in the chest.—
The cough and expectoration diminish, or entir<ly dis
. pp ar, during the summer, but immediately manifest
themselves again on the return of winter, when tbe ex
pectoration b« comes copious.
It is re y common to meet this disease, in a milder
form, in peraens who speik t fit as a “win'er cough.”—
It comes on each winter, and us rcgubtrly subsides du
ring the summer, but at every succeeding recurrence it
manifests itself in greater s»ve itv, and the recovery in
the following summer is not so complete. This form of
Bronchitis, if neglected, will surely destroy life anil treat
ed in the usual manner, it is as incurable as consumption
itself. The mucous membrane, sooner or later, becomes
altered in structure, ami pours forth u tn itter which has
all the qualities of pus. Hectic fever supervenes, and the
disease tends slowly, but surely, to a fatal termination.
Another Iottn ol Bronchitis is peculiar to middle life
and old age. It is distinguished by the quantity and the
character of the matter expectorated. Usually there are
two tits of cotighit gin the day—otic on awakening from
sleep in the morning, and the other in the evening.—
There is cotisideiablc diltieuity of breathing while the
paroxisms of coughing last ; but it passes off as soon as
the lungs are freed (mm the viscid secretion. The pa
tient is feeble; he may, however, live and attend to
light dutie- tor several years. But tbe countenance grad
ual! assumes a pale, bluish tint, the body wastes, the
blood becomes thin, and death ensues, apparently from
the constant drain kept up by the dischaige from the
lungs. So.lie patients die from exhaustion in live or six
months, but 1 have known others to survive for as many
years.
i Here is sun anotner lorni oi tins disease railed ‘ Hi y
Bronchitis, ’ irom the quantity ol nutter cvpcctorab il.
The essential eliaructer of I)r_v Bronchitis consists in
chronic inflammation, attended by a thickening of ti e
mucous membrane, by which the air tube are diminished
iu size, and also in the secretion of a dense, glutinous
kind of matter, of a bluish whi'e color, by "which they
are still further obstructed. The ant illcr bronchi i! tubes
are oiteu entirely closed, and occasionally a tube of very
considerable size b. cone s sealed up with this matter.—
Tn'n affection is so commo . m ibis climate that, in some
d -gree, it is proha le that two out o! every three s lifer
f uni it. ‘‘In the mo-t firorcd parts of fiance.” says
I.ae nec, “rt Iy cne-hall of those arrived at adult age
will be found, on careful exam nation, to present evi
dence of a thickening of some portion of the mucous
membrane of the lung.”
The symptoms of Dry Bronchitis arc not marked by
severity. It is the most insidious of pulmonary com
plaints. The subject of it is conscious only of being
short breathed when ascending an elevation or attempt
ing to run. When a large portion of the lung is invol -
cd, a sense of oppression is experienced after meals and
on very slight exertion. By some this oppression is re
ferred to the opposite side of the chest to that iu which
the disease is situated, or to a remote part of the san e
side, or even to the region of the stomach. After a
lime difficulty of breathiug conics on, and continues for
-everwl days, the patient complaini lg of tightness in the
chest, which i< relieved by cough, and the expectoration
of a tough, jelly-like substance. The cough by which
this matter is taised is a mere rasping iff art to clear the
'hroai, and may probably occur not more than once or
twice daily, and almost unconsciously to patients them
selves. On inquiring if they have a cough, they will, al
most without exception, answer ‘‘NoI” vet during your
conveiration they will, peihap*. hack and raise a little
el y like mucous half a dozen times. At intervals Hic
cough is morcsevere, and comes in paroxysm, when it
is loo commonlv regi rdt-d as simply ‘ nervous." If the
stoniaeh be at i-ll detaiged, it is fashionable Hi regard il
as "a mere stomach romih," or as being caused bv •*liier
disrate," while, iu fact, the dc-riingem.'iits of the stom
ach liver, kidneys, and of the uterine functions which
exist are but so many consequences of this very condi
tion of the lungs. There is something so gratifving in
being assured by the p* > sician that there is "no danger
of consumption," that “this cough is a mere trifle, and
will speedily pass away if only left to itself;" that it is not
surprising the flattered patient entirely overlooks the
important fact tli it no careful examination of the lungs
has ever been made to determine the health or disease
of this organ; that this gratifving opinion, therefore, i
founded on nothing reliihle, and, reduced to its intrinsic
merits, is siniplv tampering with human life.
Most “coughs of long standing,” unattended by free
expectoration, are caused either by this condition of the
hrotichial tubes or incipient tubercles in the lungs.—
The ‘‘neglected cold," which so often proves the herald
of Consumption, is but another variety of this disease,
Tbe frequency of this form of Bronchitis, its slow, in
sidious, and tieauherous progress, and the disastrous
conscqueuces to which it so often leads, shou'd awaken
Irom their lethargy all who are nursiug dry coughs of loug
standing iu the vain hope of growing out of them. How
ever slight and apparently uuimportant such coughs m iy
seem, they lead on by sure graduation to a premature
grave. Your obedient servant,
ROB’T HUNTER.

THE DISASTER AT CAMDEN «. 0.—FURTHER
PARTICULARS.
The Sumter (S. ('.) Watchman brings further particu
lars of a melancholy disaster near C.imden, S. C., Satur
day, by which twenty-four persons, chiefly young ladies,
lost their lives. The party had enjoyed the morning
pleasantly in a pic-nic excursion at a mill poud ten miles
from the town, and in the afternoon about thirty of them,
ail ladies -ave one or two, embarked ou a flat boat to
sail on the pood. The Watchman says:
They had been out some time, and were near the cen
tre of the poud, »h< n the boat ran on a snag. This ex
cited little or no fears, as it was supposed that a speedy
extrication could be effected. All was life aud spirit—
all was hope and happiness! Soon it was perceived that
the great prt s-ure of the boat upon the snag, in conse
quence of the number it contained, was puncturing its
bottom, tnd that the water was nuking its way inside.—
Now the excitement btgau. Now fear began to picture
its sad traces upou those just now happy countenances.
Now the tender aud timid ladies called upou their pro
tectors for that assistance and d divcrauce which, painful
to say, they were unable to utl'ord.
Momentarily tbe danger became greater, aud momen
tarily the excitement of those ou board, as well as those
on shore, became more intense. It seeni9 that deliver
auce would have come, aud that the boat would have
probably hecu pushed ofT and run near euough to the
shore for many, if not all, to have escaped, had it not
been that those who stood at each end, (a white nmn and
a negro,) with their poles, laboring with ull their powe ,
shoved each in the same direction, thus mutu ally d •
stroying the effect of their etlorts. Soon, in a lew mo
ments, she began to siuk I When this was seen, and the
fact that she could not be moved became too apparent,
the scene became frightful indeed. The wildest excite
meut and fear seemed to seize every heart, aud but few
if any were sufficiently collected to enable them to em
ploy their efforts for rescue advantageously, la a few
moments, now, she sank, when tbe scene may be better
imagined than described.
Pierciug cries aud shrieks, and calls for help, both
from those ou shore aud those on the unfortunate boat,
hlled tbe air. Sisters and brothers, parents aud children,
relatives aud friends, whose hearts were bound together
bv the nearest and dearest of earthly lies, and animated
by tbe warmest aud most tender affection, were there—
some on the sinking boat aud some on the shore. Oh,
how rudely were those confiding hearts toru asunder and
ravished with wild and aching grief!
The boat seems to have committed them to the bosom
of the water, huddled together, maiuly, in a mass. The
water is supposed to have been about twenty feet in
depth. Thus thrown together, oue clinging to the other,
with that grasp which bilongs only to those in a drown
iog condition, there was little opportunity for the males
in the company to rescue the ladies or even to save them
selves.
But a few (wc have not been apprized of tbe exact
uutnber,) were saved, of those upou the boat. Oue a> >
ol daring, manly and gallaut rescue, which has been re
ported to us, aud which we believe true, demands espe
cial notice at our hands and should be rewarded by tbe
lifetime gratitude of thos‘ immediately concerned, as
well as to the relatives and fiiends ol'Jtle same. Mr.
Jones, a fireman upou the Camden train, (this ti&in was,
as well as we can learn, at the time of the awful occur
rence, near the spot,) rushed to the spot, and by almost
superhuman efforts, coupled with most cool and manly
courage, brought three of the drowning persons to the
shore.
Mr. 8. S. Riobburg, (surveyor formerly of this p’aee )
with noble devotion, lost bis life, as we understand, at
tempt ing to save another. Two negroes alto lost their
U • >.
Kffurts to rescue tbe bodies of the unfortunate drown
ed were immediately employed. Some were taken Irom
the water. Other* could not be found. Tbe flood-gate*
of tha pond were toon hoisted, but the body of water
was great and could not be soon mn off. It wai thought
that it would be sufficiently dry on Saturday night to ad
mit of all the bodii s being found. We have uot learned
the number that had been found when our dispatch was
sent.
Camden is shrouded in gloom, and many of its citizens
overwhelmed by the most severe nflliction and bereave
ment. At half-pas', three on yesterday, eight bodies were
at the Methodist Church, where funeral ceremonies were
being performed, in the presence ofa large congregation.
Almost every eye was moistened by the tear of sympa
thy or bereavement.
The names of the drowned were published yesterday.
A correspondent of the Charleston Courier says that -1
ol the victims belonged to one family, aud that another
family lost five'of its members by the disaster.
