R!“® RICHMOND WHIG. GOOD NEWS FROM KANAWHA—TUE GRECIAN PHALANX IN MOTION. -, August lit!), 1860. 7b the Kditor of the I17i ty. The largest political meeting tbat wo hire witnessed in Kanawha riuce the memorable campaign of 1810— wlii'u the enthusiasm for “Old Tip" swept all resistance a>ide—assembled tu a cocl pleasaut grove near Oliai les tou, ou Thursday the Oth inst., to taily the uominalious of the Constitutional Union party. There were present upwards of 1000 persons from all portions of the coun ty, and it was apparent from the enthusiasm attd anima tion of those Whigs present, that they will worthily ac quit themselves this Fall. As usual at Whig meetings, the most perfect propriety and good feeling existed. The dinner prepared was iu excellent style. The music front the large Kanawha It,ass Hand was delightful, and to crown all, the speeches were such as to charm—almost euougb to convince any one. that in the Gousitulional Union party rests the only hope of our once glorious but uow tottertug and almost dissevered Union. The If-st sp alter was Col U. 11. Smith, who addres*ed the meeting iu his characteristic style, forcibly and ir resistibly appe !iug to the palrioiisin of the people, to resist now the traitors who would dissolve this Union— deploriug tint evil results of such a course, and denoun cing iu strot g terms the agitators—the politicians who had misruled us uow loug enough. It has been our good fortune to hi ar CoLS, ofteu, bat ou ihis occasion be “tried hiuis It." Mr. V. Hendrick, then followed iu an eloqu nt address, laying the blows ou the detainers of the great statesman and pitriot Henry Chtv, (alludlug to the “O. I*. F."(, and also appealing to the Wnigs to piescut an undivided trout at the jiolls. Dinner was announced at the closv of Mr. Il's speech, after which Judge Summers, appears d ou the stand. The station tbat Judge S. has occupied for a number of years, until recently, bus excluded him from participa tion in political affairs. He is now, however, warmly ad vocating these principles so loug enteruiued by him, and his speech last Thursday was probably the best one he ever made. There was nothing left unsaid. Any one who could have heard, unmoved, bis eloquent appeal in behalf of the Union, U more hard, tied than we could imagine even traitors to be. This is the first time Judge 8., has appeared on S.ump (except once lor Mr Goggin) .-iuce he i auvassed the Stale in the Gubernatorial Cam ptign of 1851. So nitny have been tlectrified by his eloquence that I will not attempt a discretion— knowing that in this hasty sketch I could not do him justice — Suffice it to say that lie leaves bis mark, and this will be seen at the (tolls. Following Judge S , was Dr IVrick, who has acted with the Democracy lor a number ot years. It made one • feel like old limes" to hear Dr. P., ouce more miking a good Whig speech. The Dcnioc wcv crowed prodigiously when they gained the Dr., but their feathers tell wbcu hr returned again to his early lore. The Dr. has a great deal of influence, and always curies a Urge vote with him. Geo. S. Patton, E-q , a gifted young lawyer, weli known in Richmond, wound up— lay it g it cu the Democracy and Di-unionists, with au uusptiing hand. Take it all iu all, there were few such meetings ever held in this region of the coutilry. It will have a good effict, and the motto insetibed on the banner of the Whigs of Kenawha i t 181“, “Kanawha ever at her post" will be not unworthily borne in this campaign. 1 have rarelv witnessed so much interest iu political affairs—so much good feeling on the part of Wligs and despoudency of Democrats. Kanawha as ever will be found high up in the column of Whig Oouuties this November. KANAWHA. fi«-«i inr ainit/r'Mu aniujr. LETTER FROM GOV. LETCHER. We have tbe pleasure of layiug before our readers the fallowing eorn4poude1.ee between Guv Letcher nod two ot his personal trieuds iu Augusta, which most satisfac loiily explains ise'.f. Tba Governor, with that frankness which has always ibnracterized him a3 air.au and as a oolitician, avows his preference fot Douglas and Johnson, tbe fairly nominated, but much abused aud misrcprescnt cd, candidates ol tbe National Democracy. Gov. Letch er Hriiilv adheres to tbe National Domocralic organiza tion, upon which we heartily congratulate our fiicnds iu Virginia and elsewhere. Our Breckinridge frieudsclaim tbe National organization upon the ground that Caleb Cushing, the President of tbe regal ir convention, join ed the Seccders, became President of their convention, and thus made it National. I'pon deci lidl.v be ter groutid we can now claim for Douglas aud Jubuson, the regular Stale nomination ot Virginia—since we have as our standstd-brarer of the party, the Governor of tbe Slate, the commander of her military forces, etc. Tbe announcement of the Govi root's-preference for Douglas aud Johnson cannot be without its ilt.-ct in Vii - Etnia; for, apart Irom his otlicia! po-itii n, the name ol John Letcher is a tower of strength in the Suve: Stacmox, August go, 18IS0. Hun. John Ltlrktr : Dear Sir: We are aniious to know tbe poution you will take in the present Presidential canvass, now that all hope of uniting tbe two wings of the Democratic party in Virginia is over, we consider tbe “I’uioti” is in imminent |ieril, and yet we hope the conservative voice of the American people will, on the tith day of November ncx", save tbe country from tuin. Hop ng to hear Irotn you, we 11 e Your friends, Bx.vi. Crawford, M. G. Hauxax. GOV. LETCHER’S REPLY. Kicmtoxn, Viriiinia, I August 22d, lStio. ) Btnjomin Crawford, M. Ir. Hartnun : Gen'lemeu: Your letter of the 2oth instant, desiring to kuow the position I intend to take in the Presidential contest, has beeu received, and I avail myself ot the ear liest moment to reply. I have purposely avoided committing myself to the sup port of either Breckiuridge or Douglas, in the hope that a compromise would be agiecd upon by the two Con ventions recently held in our Slate.lbat would be hoi o a ble aud mutually eaiidac'ory to both wings ol tbe Dem ocratic party. All hope of an adjustment having now tailed, 1 have no hesitation iu declaring that my support will begtveu to Douglas and Johnson. The division that lias occurred in the Democra'ic party could have been, and 1 think ought to bave been, avoided. Tb< re was no more necessity for a rupture in I81UI, than there was in 18iti. The division has, however, taken place. Tbe breach is widening daily, and it is useless now io enquire iuto tbe causes which have produced these deplorable results. Such a discussion will not restore uuion and hariuouv, but will, of necessity, add to present embar rassments, and will only tend to make certain the el c tion of a s. ctioual candidate to tbe Presidency, whose success all parties must deplore. The following publications in the Montgomery (Ala) Confederation shew the turn tbe Cannes Is taking in that fiery latitude! A CARD. Mr. W. L Yancey, in a card, published in the Adner liner of the U-d, after denouncing the Editors of this pap-r iu tbo most offensive language, concludes by fay ing that, “their (my) conduct has shown that they (I) arc not to bo treated as gentlemen; but as black guards " “My son has this day caned the senior editor of the Confederation—nod I now brand him as a couvic edliar, and a slanderer, and turn bint loose.” The assumption, on Mr. Yancey’s parr, that I am not to be “treated as a gentleman," is tbe cheap resort of a coward, who seeks refuge from the responsibility “usual among gentlemen ” It is an advertisement of the fact r hat be won't tight, if calird on dir me. Voder such circumstances, 1 hare no right to ask a frit nd to put him self in a position which might compromise him ; and this, Mr Yancey will kuew when he cau tiously penned his card. His son had asaaulied me on tbe street for articles in this pap-r, acknowledged by Mr. Yaucev himself to be irsultinp; he was iu towu on the day of the publication of one of them, and perudl’ed, if he did uot iustigate, his son to mako an attack which he bad not ite courage to do him* If. If (he articles writ ten by me were insulting, Mr. Y. had his remedy. I held myself ready, at nil times, to respond to any de maud he might nuke, but he skulks from a conflict, and —interposes ids son"! This man—a convicted felon—the recipient of Kiecutive clemency—who is marc familiar with the walls of a jtil than with tru h or honor, re venges an insult uttered him, not by aetn hut words, and advertises hintseif as a poltroon and coward, by publish ing that tee “are not to be treated as gentlemen." He has saved us the necessity of pulili-hing him as a cow ard, bv advertising it himself iu advance. J. J. SEIBELS. THAT CASINO. W. L. Yancey says his son caued the senior editor of the Confederation ou Wednesday last. If he had a-ked tbe eyo witnesses to the ttffiir, he would have found the boot sadly on the other leg. His son did attack ns with a blud geon prepart d for the purpose, and biiug unat tried and noteip-vting an attack, with our umbrella up, he did hit us a slight blow on the left temple ; but after wo got our umbrella furled so that we could use it, we taught him, in his retreat, a severe lesson (or his temerity, by wearing it out to atoms over him, and then putting his back to ttic grotiud, where we should have given him much more hut for the interference of the crow d. Being of sup -rior physical force, we do not by any means mention this to boast of, but merely to correct a false impression from going ont Ironi Yancey's a atemi nt. From the FredirieLnburg Kevin. We have the best authority for staling that the Mexi can question is on the point of being peremptorily set tled try a decisive intervention of four of the great pow ers most deeply interested in the restoration of order throughout the donduions of our distracted neighbor.— France, Ei gland, Spain and Prussia have signed a con vention lor the paolieation ol Mexico, to which they in vite the adhesion of the I'nited States, but which llrev propose to carry into s iV.-ct without that adbesiou should the United States refu-e i>. The bases of toleration for all religious opinions, and of a modified establishment for the Rotuau Ca'holic Church, are undeislood to havo been already accepted by the Constitutionalists under J.ia'ez on the one part, ami bv the Clerical party uudrr Mirumonon the other.— An armistice of twelve months’ duration is to be declar ed between the respective leadets, and during ibis petiod those portions of Mexico occupied by each are to be held without dispute by the actual occupants, joint setiou be ing taken to secure the carrying on of the necessary bn uh.es* ol the public administration and the maintenance of order. At a time to be hereafter fixed, the people of Mexico are to be called upon to el ct between be prin ciples represented by the two factions, and (he respec tive leaders pledge themselves to resign all their authori ty and arms into the bauds of the Government thus de signated under the sanction of the intervening Power*. The grounds of this action, already submitted to tho Administration at Washington are, that tho party of Ju arez, which might have been established as the Supremo Executive more than a year ago, under the terms of the treaty proposed by Senor Ocampo through Mr. McLaue to the Washington Government, has demonstrated its in capacity of conquering power, aud that the United Stairs have definitely abdicated their pretensions to aid it in tbia conquest; that the party of Miramou in like manner has proved itself dependent upon an isolated in tervention by Spain, which is in every poiut of view un desirable; and that the interests of the subjects ol the intervening Powers and of civilization generally, can no longer be left at the mercy of the partisan warfare which has raged (or six years in Mrxico, and has reduced the country to the very brink of chaos. It is unnecessary for us to point out to our readers the the gravity and importance of this act on tho part of the European States. Our own government is understood to bare announced that while a pacific intervention of the sort contemplated, if it fails to command the assist ance, csDnot provoke the hostility ol the United States, no armed interference to enforce its provision must be made without due previous notice, commuuioated to the Administration at Washington. The results reached are attributed principally to the activity of the l’rusaian Minuter in Mexico, whose com trjrmeu are largely represented in the foreign popuA lion of the Republic, and to the influence of Lord John RueeelJ.
