Six or eight desmers from the Federal catr p at Chambersburg reached Harper’s Ferry yesterday tvening, and several on the day previous. DKTAILII) ACCOPST Or THK HUHT AT PHILIPPI We rind iu the Wheel., g //.It / /rucer (a Republican journal! a long account of the fight at Philippi, between the Federal and Vir6i iia forces, tho main facts of which we have already given. Wc tu'jvin, however, some in teresting details, of corn sc the Intel iigcncer'i account is by no means intended to flitter tho Virgiiiims: Graktox, Monday Night, June 3 j. The excitement has neen intense hero ail day about the action at Philippi, of which you are already appriz-d by telegraph. Kver since about 11 o'clock this morning pet sons have been coming in from the scene of action, and at each new arrival eager ciowds would gather around to hear the latent version ot the fight Every one tells the story a little different, and it is exceedingly difficult at this time" to get an absolutely accurate account of the affair. Mr. Lurdett came in from Philippi tbisevening, and from Hm and oth*rs 1 have gleaned a tolerably clear stxtt maat. l.aterday morning, at 10 o’clock, four regiments left here In two division*—one, consisting of the 1st Vir ginia Regiment, part of the Ohio loth, aud the ludiaua 7'b, under command of Col. Kelly; the other, the Indi ana '.<ib, and the Ohio lpb, commanded by Col. Lander, of Indian lighting, wagon-road, ami Potter Rrd Pryor duel notoriety. Colonel Kelly’s division moved Fast, bv tailroad, to Thornton, a small way station, five miles dis tant fiorn hen*. Thence they marched to Philippi, a dis tance of 22 milts The Indiana regiment moved out the N. W. Virginia Rtilroad to Webster, where they w*re joined by the Ohio 14th, from whi"h place they pushed forward *.n foot to Philippi, 12 mil -s fliatant. The march of the two divisions -was performed last night, tl.iough daiknees, laiu aud mud. U was a terrible undertaking, but they all w*.ut bravely throngh it no shriukingiy and without complaint. All night they toiled through the darknts* and storm, the soil earth yielding btneath their feet ti 1 the gray dawn found them in tho neighborhood of the cuemy. Col. Lander reports that as th»y reared Philippi they were discovced iv a woman, who tired at him twice, and who sent her little hoy across the hil1s (as he after wards found) to apprize the enemy of their approach.— Ue arrived on the hill across the river from aud below, Philippi aud commanding the town and the encampment (just tvlow the town) a little belore daylight this morn ing. They at otce planted two pieces of aitlllery on tho brow of the hill, just above the camp, and prepared to open on them when the time arrived. Four o’dotk was the hour at which the attack war to he made aimuluno otnly by both directions. Col. Kelly was to attack then* iu the rear aud cut otf retreat, while Col. Lander w* uld assail them in Lout. Rut Col. Kelly's division was be hind tho appointed hour, owing to tue terrible fatigue of their forced march of 22 mile*; and in addition to ibis, they tni-teed their point, and instead of coming in on the Beverly road, above Philippi, and tffectually cutting off all retreat, they came iD, when they did come, just belcw the town. Wbtn the d*y began to dawn upon th« impatient forces of C( I Lander, it discovered to them the camp be low in a state of commotion, evidently in great alarm, act! pr. piling for fight. The hour appointed for the at tack cam- and passed, but still Col. Kelley’s division had j not at rived. Impatient to begin the attack, and frnrful that the enemy, almost within his grasp, should escape without smelling powdrr, Cr.l Lander ordered the i r.il lery to begin ti e atlai k, and, at a i| tarter pas' four, the guns were tinlimbered, and dropped the first messenger o( terror into the enemy’s camp, lots than a quarter of a mile away. Simultaneously with the roar of the fiist gun, Col. Kelly, at the head of his command, came in eight across the river below the camp, and comprehend ing the position of affairs, they rushed forward at oneo iu the direction of the camp. Meanwhile the battery having, aft* r the first shot or two, got an accurate range, played open the camp with marked effect, tearing through tents and bouses at a fearh 1 rate. This the en emy couldn’t stand, and they retreated ia great disorder, in every direction that premised safety, after firing at random and scattering volleys which di 1 no damage whatever. Col. Kelley’s command was clfse after, the Virginia troops in advance, the Henry Clav Guards ia front, and ColomI Kelly and Capt. Fordyce hading. At the same time Col. Lander’s force came rushing down the hill to the bridge, and they all put out after the fugitives yelling like Indians. They could not be overtaken by our already exhausted men, who, aft.r closing them a couple of miles, returned to the evacu ated camp, to learn the painful fact that their victory, though complete, was dearly, too death, bought. Co! Kelly, who, with a bravery amounting to rashness, was foremost from first to lest, was rallying his men in the upper part of the town, tbs enemy having all apparently tied, when he fell by a shot from a foe concealed either beh:nd a fence cr iu a house; some say the a°sailan( fired from bebiud a wagot; others that Col. Kelly was pressing 'him hard with a view of capturing him when he wheeled and fired. This is not substantiated. At any rate, the shot was fired after the engagement was over. The as sas.-in was an assistant quartermaster in the Confederate force. H s name is Simms, and he hails from Chester field, across the river from Richmond. He was imm< di a'.ely soil’d, and it is a great wonder they did not make mince-meat of him instanter. The pistol with which he shot Col. Kdly is an old fashioned, old Virginia hcr-c pistol, carrying a very large ball and inflicting a most dangerous wuund. The ball entered the left breast, and passing ch ar through, lodged benea'h the skin, just ur dirneath the shoulder blade. It has been extracted, and every attention of the highest m-dical and surgical skill is lavished upon the wonnded officer. In the gray, uncertain ltgbt of the morning, it was iu> po-sible to tell anything about the loss of the enemy, as tney carried away in tkeir tight whatever k.lied and wounded they may have had It is very cer tain that somebody waa hurt, and right badly, too. A leg, which li.ul been torn off by a cannon bull, wag picked up io I be camp. There was a great deal of blood upon ihe ground, and along the road in the direction of the flight, on the fences, and ou everything in the way of the in discriminate retreat. Hats, blankets, clouks and every imaginable description of luggage, were scattered along the rnad lor more than a mile. 1 saw one of the sects siou hats, with a veritable cockade, which a chap was wearing around town to-day with a great deal of gusto. The hat and epaulets of Ctlonel Porterfield, the se cession commander, were picked up in the road I li.-y left behind some forty hoises, all their provisions, ihe r baggage, and camp equipage, aud a good many handsome uniforms, together with souio -14b stand of arms— at I of which fell into the hands of the victors Several prisoners were taken besides Simms, among them D. M Auvil, prosecuting attorney, aud Col. Wil ley. Captain Robinson, of the Logan Hoards, bad the liouor of making the capture. Colon. 1 Willey’s coin mi .ion from ihe Conf. derate authorities, with aome in teresting correspondence, was found upon his person. Seven I bats, apparently belonging to officers, were picked up, and a burse and buggy, belongii g to B. F. The almost painful suspense and anxiety into wbnh this community was tbiowu, on Monday afternoon, upon the arrival of the train from Norfolk, which brought nu merous rumors of lighting hiving taken place in the vi cinity of Newport News, on James River, was most agree ably relieved yeaterday forecoxn by passengers who came tip from York and Elizabeth City counties, on the James River steamer Curtis Peck. These gentlemen bring the percioulars of a warm contest, in which the Yankee troops engaged our force? tor some three and a half hours. Several gentlemen traveled on the Curtis Peck for a distance of sixty miles with Private Causey, of Elizabeth City County, who was engaged in the coi.tbc. and rrlated all the particulars. One ot bis auditors war Mr. E W. Mr. Hudgins gives us particulars, which we believe are in tbs main leliable, but they may be slightly varied by the ultima! account. It appears that, ou Friday las'. Genera! J. Bankhead Magruder, of the Confederate army, who has b. e i at his headquarters at Yorktown for some tim* past, received further iufotmaiiou of the continued depredations of the Yankee hir. hugs, who, under Gen. Our forces detailed for this mission, we are informed, consisted of some six or more companies of the First North Carolina regiment, Col. D. H. Hill, a portion of the Richmond Howi'xert, under Cap am -, ar.d two comoanies of cavalry—one from the county ol Chat Us City, and the other from Nottoway county. The column moved ou as far as a point near the dividing I no between Elizabeth City and fork counties, and lu the inimmediate vicinity ol the Bethel Church. This iutell gecce was received by our officers with iome doubt, but they resolved to be on the alert, and jive the infamous despoilers of cur property and in vaders of our soil, as hot a reception as rifle, musket md grape shot could extend.
