EX-GOVERNOK AIKEN—HIS VIEWS OF THE WAR. Ex-Governor Aiken, of South Carolina, is still in Washington, where he has been com plimented by visits from residents who were tuiuiliar with him in former times, when bo represented a d'strict in the House of Rep resentatives, and avowed his loyalty to the Union. He still professes the samo senti ments. In 185C ho was the candidate for the Speakership of the House, but wax de. tested by General Banks. At that time lie was said to be the richest slaveholder in the world. A correspondent of the Rochester Democrat lias hart an interview with him, and writes the following: personal appearance. Mr. Aiken has none of the unctuous solid ity of person which position is supposed to bestow, and is the farthest remove from those (juattlebums who have so successfully cultivated pompous and offensive manners, lie is live feet ten in height, perhaps, and may weigh one hundred auil forty pounds, llis hair and full whiskers and moustache are very gray, but bis manners are subdued and courteous, and bis eyes as bright as during bis memorable contest with Ranks fur the Speakership, when lie wasn’t elect ed, but tnought lie was, und committed to memory his speech of acceptance. The Governor’s face is seamed and furrowed un duly lor a man of sixty, and has an auxious, vigilant, weary look. he calls the confederates “rebels.” QHis health was tolerable, he said, and he hud been treated witlt marked respect ever siuce the war began, by the rebels of ail grades, in South Carolina, who had tolera ted liis dissent from tlieir schemes, and now by the 1’resideiit and Gen. Jeffries, of whose considerate kindness lie spoke in the high est terms, (it was noticeable that when lie mentioned Jeff. Davis’ plotters, he said “the rebels”—not “the Con federates.”) “These have been lour dread I til years,” lie went ou to say, “but 1 told tiio rebels irom the beginning what the end would be. 1 have breu disappointed iu only one re spect; 1 told tin m 1 would give them two years to be cooiiiterid in, and it has taken iour. You <•> the North know nothing of the war in this respect. Kvery family in the South is bereaved, and 1 toid them it would he so.” HE AVoWS UNSWERVING UNION SENTIMENTS. He said “ No, 1 have never cast my lot with them. 1 told them they were wrong from the first. I gave a toast for the Union at a nullification supper in lN.'hl, ami offend ed all my young associates, and sinco the re bellion commenced 1 have not been to Rich m >nd or Montgomery, and have declined of fice from Mr. Davis lor myself and friends. t\ ben Mr. Davis was my guest recently at Charleston, 1 defended the Union, and scout ed the absurd doctrine of Secession in a. conversation with him. Since the war begun I have never said or done a thing of which tuy conscience accuses me as an act of dis loyalty to the nation.” UIS JUDGMENT OK JEFF. DAVIS. Ho continued by saying that Davis was not the man lor President, and never should have been chosen, lie hid not the ability nor the weight of character of !1 outer, and ha 1 been very unpopular ever since hii elec tion. South Carolinians had denounced him without stint—but it was a position where success was impossible. He bad not u high opinion of Davis’ morils or dis :r«tion, but it seemed to him incredible how a man of edu cation ami culture, of refined taste, a mem ber of the church who sat at Christ’s Tablo and partook of the sanctified body ami blood of t lie world’s Crucified Redeemer, could possibly harbor a thought of complicity in the assassination. He supposed President Johnson Had good evidence, however, but if such complicity was proved it would ma terially damage bis respect lor human na ture. 11IK WAR ENDED. The Governor said the war was .substan tially over when Grant took Richmond; all the South agreed to that. No organized guerilla ivaifaro will be carried on. The people of the South will not permit it. A selfish instinct to defend themselves will stimulate them to hunt down guerillas, lie spoke with pride of having recently presided at a meeting in Charleston to express to gret and inaignntiou at me nmraer m Mr. Lincoln. He sai l he had lost nearly all his property in the war (some seven or eight million dollars,) but if he saved enough lor hi< eupport ho should nor mourn tho loss. This is the substance of tho conversation. It is said, though 1 did not learn it from him, that the Governor ia brought hero charged with aiding blockade runners. AN AUGUSTA KJHTOli ON PEACE. [From the Augusta Chronicle, May I.] As with most wars, ours has been brought to a sudden cjDcIus on by a powerful and mighty catastrophe.
