On the night of the murder the Inmates of the house Wire Mr. and Mrs. Kent, the seven chil dren we have mentioned and thiee servants—a cook, a house-maid, and Elizabeth Gongh.the nurse. Duting the night the child Francis wai tsken out of his cot. strangled, stabbed, hi* throat cat, and his body, wrapped in a blanket which had been drawn out from over him, was thrown down a privy helor ging to the home, it was very evident that the uivrJer was committed by some oih in the hou*e. but, nt* withstinding every efi'ort was made to discover the mystery, the murder ha* remained a secret until how. Suspicion was directed towaids Miia Constance Kent, but, an investigation, absolved her. Suspicion then fell on the nurse, and there were not wanting those who set uu a theory which involved even the father of the child in the guilt of the murder. The coroner's ii quest did riot satialy the public, ami the comaer was loudl v blamed. Slowly the public cariosity subsided, but not without that feeling of disappointment winch fol.ow the unsuccessful attempt to jienetrate a mystery. The Kent family broke op their cs talilislmieut and quitted the neighborhood Nothing more of a reliable character was heard of the case until the 23d of April, when the stal ling intimation was conveyed to the Chief Ma gistrate at Bow street that Miss Constance Kent was in custody upon her own confession upon the terrible charge, having been accompanied to London by the Rev. Ultimately, Miss Kent regained her composure and nothing afterward occurred to outwardly mark her sense of the awful posi tion in which she is placed. The Hev. EXPOSITIONS OF SCIlIPTliUE PItOPHECY. ••Christ'sSecond Coming; is it Pre-millennial or Post millennialis the title of a work hy the K«v. Hichard Cunningham Ehimeall, just pub lished for the author by John Ttowr and Edward Briukerhotf, of this eity. The title of the work indicates very fully its subject. It is remarkable that whenever events of great interest and importance ate taking place among the nations.the attention of c.mmentatora on the Seriptualbooks iseijiecially turned totacexposi tion of the prophetical part. When the kingdoms of Europe were engaged in the mighty wars of Napoleon, and old uy ua.-dies were overthrown and new ones set up in their places, and more than half the civilized world was convulsed by revo lutions, tiere appeared a great number of elabo ra'e works aiming to expound the prophecies in such a manner as to app-y them to contempora ry event.i. i he great civil war of our own re public, with the change ot institutions of wh^ch it is tte cause, seem? to have a likeeflect. We have nheady noticed one or tvo werzs of tilts nature, and that before us is one of the most re markatde for ita research »ud the care with which it ii wri ter. Air. Shimeall ha* given to the subject of bis work the study o many year*. Hit tre.t.se bears evidence not only of the zeal with wbicn he maintains his own view ot the luhject, but of the diligence with which he has explored the wilting* of other*. In regard to tie second adveut of the Messiah, he has collect ed all the different theories which have been pro posed, stated the arguments in their favor, aud replied to them in all instance* in which ho doe* not accept them. ... , ...... The miijority of the Christian church at the preneut day, as is truly stated by Mr. Shimeall, hold that the second co/nlnz ol Christ is a spirit ual or allegorical coming. They believe that this coming will (.onsi-d, in the diflusiou ol religions truth, and the extirpation of re ig.on* error in the conv« reion of the heathen, the uaivcisal ac ceptance of the gospel, and the general conform, ltv of the live* Ol men to its precepts. Afr. Shimeall includes all this in his interpretation of the prophecies, but be gees further, and hold* that there will be a personal anl corporeal com ing of the Messiah, that the riven Saviour will return to earth in ine body in which he left the crtve—jn his glorified humanity—to dethrone all powe s adviree t»the spirit of the Gospel, to dsstroy Anti-Christ and his armies, to rvlo in per ton over all the nations of the earth, and to in augurate are fin of justice, mercy »n S truth. This second coming of Christ, according to Mi. Shime ail’s view, is to precede and usher in the millen ium It will prepare the way for that ago of in nocence, psace and :OVe which ia to succeed 'he present ace of dissension. blo.dsUed and crime, and to which the MiUenarlans loos u ith earnest longings for its immediate arii val. Although Air. Shimeall acknowledges himielf in a minority, he give* tin nAtcesof various eminent persons, both of ancient and modern times w ho have adapted view* aimiUr to th so set forth in this w ori. A part of the volume fs taken up with a reply to Professor bhedd. of the Union Theological Seminary In thle city, who, In hU History of Christian Doctr.ne, affirm* that Millenarianism by which he means similar, view* to those held by Mr. Shimeatl, had never been the recognized doctrine of the Chriatian Church. Mr. Shimeall takes issue with him on this point, ,nd brings forward many examples of peraons in the early age* of the church, and the middle ages and iu modern time*, who were Millenarian*. Lest the view taken by Mr. Shimeall should be confound ed with what la called Millerism, he takes care to show wherein he differs from the Milleritew. Iu the lirst place, he denica the possibility of Axing the day and hour of Christ's second coming though he holds that there are certain s> mptonis from which i s near approach is to be inferred. In the second place, he maintains that the con flagration of the world is not, as the Mdleritca hold, conteraporsMoti ly with the second advent of the Messiah, since the promised reign cfChrist on earth could not in that event t»ke place. The reader may not accept Mr. Shiroeall's con clusion, but he cannot look over the book with out being interested in the discussion of a ques tion which has mgaged the thoughts of many emloent men in every age of the Christian era which could occupy such a mind as that of New • ton, and which has so strong an attraction’lor persons of a lively Imagination when studying tie prophetic books of fccripture. / — ■ ■ . national cubbescv.
