Brigadier-General Heekiuan is a conductor on the Central New Jersey Railroad. There are two hundred small-pox patients in the Chattanooga hospitals almost destitute ol cloth.ng. General D.lH. Hill, late or the Confederate army, is a deligate to the Presbyterian General Assembly, now sitting at Macon, Georgia. Mn Ataily has recovered $10,000 damages from the l^misjivaiiia Railroad Company for cuusiug the deatl^w :icr husband bv sheer carelessness. Mr Southern, of Dubuque, Iowa, lately brought an action against Mr. Uverpeck for seducing his wife, and recofcred $7,000 damages. The bridge over the Chattahoocbie River, seven miles south of Atlanta has been carried away by a freshet. A tornado swept over Pulaski, Tenn., on Tuesday, unrooting buildings, and temporarily destroying tel egraphic communication with the South. Vt the lowc-t estimate there are now in the Dis trict of Columbia at least fifty thousand negroes, against about eighty thousand whites. The Sandusky, Dayton and Cincinnati Railroad is advertised to be sold" at auction, to satisfy a mort gage, on the 5th of January next. The Cincinnati Presbytery has dismissed in dis grace the Rev. Dr. M. I.. P. Thompson of the .Second Presbyterian Church iu that city lor licentious con duct. The Hon. J. L. M. Currv has accepted the Presi dency of Howaid College. Alabama, and will take steps immediately to put it iu a condition for the re ception of pupils. A man named John Jones, living at Atlanta, Ga., sends to the Wvandottc (Kansas) (lazcltc the small sum of $50,000, Confederate money, and asks the editor to send the paper a month! Mr. W. H. Crosby, of Chicago, lias made an as signment of all In’s property for the benefit of his creditors. His liabilities are between $400,000 and $500 000. General Sheridan and stall' called on General Scot while he was iu New Orleans. In discussing the late war. General Scott spoke in hign terms of Generals Lee. Johnston and Lougstreet. The Savannah papers of last Saturday announce the arrival of the second installment of shad from the St. Johns River, l'loiida. A large lot of them were shipped North. Rev. George Maxwell Randall. B. B., of Boston, was consecrated Bishop of Colorado and parts adj.t ceut, on Thursday. About 1735 the Hon. Theodore Atchison, of Ports mouth. N. U., left a legacy of XI,000. the income of which was directed to lie distributed iu loaves of bread to the poor of that town every Sunday. This has been done regularly for nearly a century: about X'o.000 have been thus spent, and the fund has nut been impaired. A report of a most remarkable discovery comes to us from Italy. An Italian sarant is said to have dis covered a process bv which sounds may be transmit ted by an electrical process any distance, so that two persons—one in Rome and the other iu Paris— may converse together, .recognizing the sound of each other’s voice. The Barings have taken two millions of the five percent gold-bearing bonds of Massachusetts, at a imut ninety-seven |>er cent. While a couple were being married in an English church the other morning, the mother of the young |ady. who was under age, rushed into the church ami forbade the wedding. The officiating minister stopped the service, aud, although the bridegroom had niououuoed the words: - With this ring l thee wed, declared that no legal marriage had taken pla> e. Hughes was convicted at Cleveland, Ohio, last Fri day. of murder in the first degree, for shooting Mi'S fauuen Parsons, at Bedford, (a few miles from Cleveland.) on the 'Jth of August, lbtkfi. The cir cnnistanres of the crime were peculiar. Hr. Hughes, a married man with one child, had settled in Bed ford. where he gained the etl'ectious of Miss Parsons, a girl of seventeen, ami effected her ruin. They Hed t.. Pittsburgh, in December, ls04. where a forged di vorce was exhibited, and a form of marriage goue through, and where Hughes was arrested for bigamy.
