RICHMOND WHIG. WEDNESDAY MORNING..JAN. 10, D?6B TUE NORFOLK AND ST. NALAIRE NAVIGA TION COMPANY. Meeting of Ike Director* nnd Member* oTtbeMar chaai'k nud Mechanic’* Exchange-Direct Trade a Fixed Fact. ____ [From Ike Norfolk Host of tbs 8th.] Saturday evening, a called meeting of the d'rec- j tors aud members ol the Norfolk Merc haul sand Me dmn c's Exchange, at their reo.us, was be d for the , purpose of receiving Pro|ms.tw..s and ex[d»nat.ons . com Co! (1. Tliomi - »n wls mtreduced 10 the mootin' . He said that ho had Ucn induced to embark in this enterprise by W Ballard Preston, to whom the legislature had granted a charter in ISM. for the purpose of sccu ,,ug direct trade between this city •udJjL Nazane, in France, ho participated iu the desire^ Mr I res ton and at once proceeded to work, and was happy to stole that the legislature had granted to the or ganization a very liberal charter—increasing its cap- i ital sto k and privileges. He whs prepared to state that the organization was so far matured, that all that was required troni Norfolk and her merchants, w as % Leartv anJ zealous co-operation iu the enter prise He was followed in his remarks by Doctor stuait (Iwynn, Maiiagiug Director of tho celebrated Ifjnda'l Steam Construction Company. Mr Owynn set forth tho feasibility of the scheme and its im mense advantages to Norfolk, which is selected as the in-point of location in preference to any other seaport iu the United States. He urged that it was of tho Brat importance that a marine and sectional dry dock, with foundries and ship yards attached, should lie constructed here.— Ho was followed by Captain Henry Kandall. tho in ventor or the new method of construe tips? and build inir oof.in steamship:4. The Captain submitted h»s plans, drawings and models, and lully explained their advantages of currying capacity, light dratr, treat strength and high rate of s|a»ed. to a sailor the advantages of his models were apparent at a glance. One great improvement which lia men tioned m in securing longitudinal resistance. This was secured by means’ of a strengthening arch fore and aft connecting with the frame by diagonal iron braces and curnster steps. The peculiarity of this model was that the vossid bad good liearings, which throw the water from the wheel as »bo ran, aud each revolution thereof, struck iu lirm water, the dead water parsing outside of the peak mauu by her prow. The plaus submitted were of the following dimensions: length, 4S0 leet; breadth, CO feet, over all, SB feet; tonnage. 0,700, w ith a rapacity ol ac commodating 3 U00 passengers, each steamer to be Blted with two Lighthall's improved wariuc engines of 3 000 horse power. B0 im h cylinder, 27 feet stroke, and 3 feet crank motion, With t||i» model aud macInn ery he staled that he would pledge his mofcSsiou.il reputation that the vessel could make the trip from th.s port to St, Nazaire in eight days, and he could, with ease, accomplish the round trip, load aud discharge, inside ol thirty days. All that stood in the way of the building of these ships, was u place where lumber, lubor and material wore availa ble- auil he knew uo belter place than this vicinity, which possessed all these advantages. They had machinery which was capable of bending all their breast hooks, kuecs. Ac., required. As tho patentee of these machines Tor the construction or ocean steamers he felt assured that all he premised for . 1 1.no ore now running, built upou bis plans, which have fully proved all he had said. Hr. I*. C. Walker, after a few practical remarks, moved that a 00011111111*0 of three bo appointed by the Chair, to lender the gentleman who had addressed the meeting their hearty and zealous co-operation in all m-a.rn.es having for their object the advance ment of the interests of Norfolk. The motion was unauiruuulsy carried, and . tho following gentlemen viz; l». C. Walker, Jas. Higgs and Henry Kimberley, wore appointed a committee to dratt a series of resolutions in accordance with the motion offered. \Y hen this committee retired. Col. William Lamb being called tor, stated that he had no conti nence iu resolutions, and preferred action. He was in earnest, and cordially desired to co-operate and lend his humble aid to any eHtarurist* that would de velope the advantages, and secure the interests of Norfolk lie advised that instead of the city sacri tieme the valuable property of the tobacco wure l,ou-e and wharf, that the city council should tendei ,t. fur a term of years, to the lirst company* which should establish a traus-atlantic hue of steamers from this port to Europe. The committee appointed to draft a series of resolutions returned and submit ted the following, which were unanimously adopted. V Hesolved, That we have listened with pleasure to the remarks this evening by Culouel Thompson. Dr. Uwynn and Capt. Kundall. relative to the establish in ul of a steamship lino between this port ami St. Xazaric. France, aud wo trust that in the language of Capt. Samuel Sneedeu they will '* art." Resolved, That we, the members of the Merchant’s and Mechanic’s Exchange of Norfolk, do hereby plcdg** to Col. Thompson aud his associates, our hearty and energetic co-operation in tlieir efforts to carry into effect said euterprize, and will, to the ex tent of our ability, sustain them, so that their efforts will be more successful. Resolved That we consider the construction or ship.yards, miebiue shojis, sectional and dry docks iu the city, a matter of the very highest importance to oar commercial Interests, aud that we cordially invite* Dr. (Jwynu and his associates to a seat in our in dst hereby pledging ourselves to aid and second his and their efforts in their behalf, iu every way in our power. Resolved, That the importance of these ami other •enterprizes demands the manifestation, on the part of the teal estate owners, of a liberal and therefore «i<e spirit, such as will encourage rather than re strain improvement, and we earnestly* ask front all our ctizeus a hearty co-operation in this respect. Several gentlemen addressed the meeting, congra tulating the citizens and the Hoard of Exchange upon the certain prospects of success of the project of the long-talked-of direct trade with Europe.— Colonel William Lamb, after a b’.ief address upon the prospect of direct trade and its advantages, of fered the following resolntion, which was unani mously adopted. Re 1 >lved. That the Board of Directors of the Mer chants’ and Mechanics’ Exchange ot' this Citv pe t tion the Citv Council that the tobacco warehou>e and wharf, owned by the city be tendered, free of re it. Tor a term of years, to the lirst company that estubl.shes a line of steamers, traus-Atlantic, from this port to Europe. Upon motion, the meeting adjourned. American people is tlic weakness of the marriage t e. We sec it stated that Chicago boasts two hun dred and seventy-live divorces ill the year that is past. We would bo glad to know what per centage i hat »um bears to the marriages. • Of these, one hundred ami seventy-seven w ere ap plied for by wives, whoso grounds of grievnuce against their husbauds were: drunkenness in fifty of the cases, desertion and crucify, four; drunkenness aud cruelty, forty-four; adultery, eight; drunken ness, desertion, cruelty and adultery combined, two; bigamy, two; other causes, two. Of the eutire number of divorces grauted, ninety-eight were up pited for by husbands, w hose grounds of grievance against their wives were: adultery in fifty-eight of the cases; desertion, twenty; drunkenness, eight tit-u liigauiv. oue; other causes, one.’ In these statistics we find forty-four, or twenty-five per cent, of all the applications by w ives were based on the cruelty of their husbands' while iu the case of the applications by husbauds, fifty-eight out ot ninety-eight, or nearly sixty per cent, of the cases were for adultery. " ill not some logical Garrison, whose occuimtiou of uhusing slaveholders is uow forever gone, organixo a society on these statistics for the abolition of marriage!— Petersburg InJex. A PaTKNT Pl'Li'iT.—Some years ago, according to the London Punch, a benevolent and ingenious Lug lishuiaa coutiived au excellent article iu this line, it is to be introduced into this country. It was proposed that the patent pulpit be built in the usual style, but suspended over the preacher’s head was to" be au apparatus something iu shape like a caudle extinguisher. Thia w as to desceud so as, in exactly fifteen minutes, to completely extinguish the clergyman, and of course his sermon could never exceed thut jieriod iu duration. Light minutes after the sermou had commenced a loud premature snap or click was to uiioiince the commencement of the extinguisher's descent, and it is slated that upou sev ers! private trials, no clergv man could be fouud who had iba ueive to continue his seiuioii after hearing th's snap or click, over throe minutes longer, such wan the feat in his mind that his light would lie hidden under the suspended bushel. Mile. Kargueil, who plsvs one of the ladies in “La Famille Benoitou," is made to exclaim. -Ah' simple attire of my early youth, what is now become of you 1 ‘leu yards of muslin, tlnee of ribbon and a flower in the hair, and with that, fifteen years of age, a brilliant complexion, aud the delight of a first ball* tVhat worn out pleasure-seeker would not feel a thrill of emotion at the sight of u dress so simple aud a joy so naive 1 Ah! muslin, white muslin' tire ungrateful mothers who were iudebted to you for th,-ir husbands, now deny you to their daughters ' O, sacred muslin, virgin of the toilet, save our young girls who are drowning themselves iu tloods of loco'" As a comment, it may lie men tioned that the toilettes of the four ladies w ho play iu the Kawille Beuoitou cost not less than eighty thousand francs, aud that Mile. Pargueil pronounces this eulogy of white ruusliu in a dress valued at seven thousand franca. An exchange says: General Grant, last week, was riding fast from Georgetown to Washington, when be was overtaken by a butcher's iait, which passed him. Bornew hat surprised, he put •* Cincinnatus” to his metal, hut the butcher whipped up his nag, and toon completely beat General Grant ou thut line, leaviug Cincinnatus far hehiud. She declared that she was moved by soia* irresisuble impulse to the commis sion of the act. Captain Robert B. Pegraru has been elected Su penntendent of the Petersburg (Vu.i railroad. The Need Tor Farm Labor. The season to commit the seed to the earth is at hand, the farmers in the conntry are going through the market places seeking laborers for the vineyard, and yet various and numerous able-bodied freed men, poorly clad, and without money, with hands in their breeches pockets, and an air of don’t-care-a tiveness may lie seen at the street corners refusing to seek homes or contract to labor for the present year. Now tics is wrong, all wrong, and very wrong, for the colored individual that refuses to'workinthc fields, or gomewhero else, during the present year, will have no clothes or food the next. The owners of the land are anxious to go to work, to mako crops and help to recuperate and make Honrish again the barren waste which war has left, butthev can do nothing without labor: and as their main dependence is on the freedmen, if they refuse to work, nil is lost. The wealth of a country con sists in its productions, and unless we can revive the agricultural interests of the Sontli we need not talk of future prosperity or the development of our re sources. Our resources are mainly in the soil, in the bowels of the earth, and nothing but toil will bring them forth. The blacks have but one choice, and it is to labor, systematically and for fair wages, or abaudon the held for others who ate anxious to take it.
