The Comercio, ol' Lima, in its number of tho 24th of December, gives thu following account of the cause of the suicide committed bv the S|>aiiish Admiral in the harbor ol \ alparaiso, on the 29th of November : On the 2sth the American Consul at Valpa raiso went on board tlie Villa do Madrid for the purpose of seeing the Admiral. They had a long interview about some matters counected with the blockade. I'areja showed himself rather favorable to the Consul s demand, and told him at the close of the conference to come back two days afterward. When the Consul was on the point of leaving, Pareja asked him for news on shore ; the Consul answered there was nothing of great importance, except the excitement caused by the capture of the Cova dotiga, and the sending of tho prisoners to San tiago. The Spanish Admiral was entirely ignorant of this—for him—so disastrous event, and this first intimation was a great shock to him. lie asked for the particulars, which were given him by the Consul, who then took his departure. According to what had been agreed upon, ho returned on the 3l)th to the tiagship, where lie found the crew in the greatest disorder and consternation. He asked for the Admiral, hut received the answer that tho latter was very siei. and could not see him. Thereupon tho Consul returned. What had taken place in the meantimo is the following: The news which Pareja had received from the American Consul had deeply alllicted him.— His mind was so occupied with it that he hardly ever afterward spoke a word. It is further stated that some hours afterwards his brain be came affected and bo fell down on deck, mut tering curses against those who so easily had surrendered to thu Chilian arms. It is supposed that he became entirely out of his mind, in which state he probably committed the dreadful deed. About the manner in which the act was ac complished, we know only what we have heard Iroui private sources, although on good au thority : That <>ti the afternoon of the tatal day, Pareja had come up on deck after dinner with his officers ; ho had a revolver in his hand, with which he shot two birds on thu wing; lie then went down to his cabin, from where shortly ut terward a shot was heard. On somebody rushing in, the Admiral was found dead, and on the table a letter, ill which, it is stated, Pareja said that “as the comman der of the Covadonga had not had courage enough to do his duty, so he (Pareja) had not enough to survive the disgrace of his tlag,”and finished with the wish that his body might not be buried in Chilian soil or Chilian waters. lu compliance with this last request, we fur .1.I I l>ur..iu’a 1.. ill v* u'HM t lilt llll ill guano, iiii board one ot tlio■ Spanish, or, as others say, a French ship, to ho sent home. His successor, till the pleasure of his Govern ment is known, will be the Captain of the Nu luaucia, Commodore Gusto Mendez Nunez. France and the United States.—John Mitchcl, in his last letter from Paris, dated the 'd instant, and published iu the New York Yetes of the 22d, says : It. is singular to contemplate the uneasy curi osity with which both French and English are waiting for the next manifestation of the ener gies ot the United States, The British press is still, most earnestly and constantly, though iu a covert manner, endeavoring to turn Ameri can wrath against Franco and Maximilian.— They have all found out now in England that the American people—that is the people of the North, for the others do not count—are a very noble, generous amt tender-heurted people ; also that they are the true Anglo-Saxons, and so-forth. Ail this is intended to lay the foun dation tor an “Anglo-Saxon” policy on the American continent, in opposition to the French notion about Latin races. The British wheed ling, however, is probably well understood ; -ind any course of action prompted or indicated by that .people, must be regarded with great suspicion, seeing that England is the only enemy the United States ha*, or ever had. * * * * The Corits f.etjislttfif is to as semble at th.e end of this month. The E"» p. ror, Hum, iq his address, cannot \y«l! avoid some rvt'mwp to the position of the United States, or at least its (longrcss, uti the subject of Mexico, Assuredly most people in France have always regarded the establishment of the Mexican Empire with profound dislike; also, they would have been delighted at any time witiiin the last four years if the French Go vernment had washed its hands of the whole ail'air. Further, it is very true that nothing l oiild he more unpopular in France than a war \wri!i The United States. Nevertheless, it does not lot to*. 1)1' any means, that the French troops are lirkei, \j }<f‘ withdrawn under a threat. France is not a couni.y he ordered oil from any shore where her'flag is planted. It is very much to be hoped, in any case, that a pacilic solution of this Mexican question may be found for the world could ill afford a war between I'rahcp ) America.
