The letter is dated 12th Instant: I ant able to lay before you the highly interesting and • important details of the surrender, through the courtesy of Col. Tal. P. sbatfuer. the eminent telegraph engineer, who was an eye-witness to the whole scene. * * It will bo recollected that Gen. Grant's first letter to Leo was dated on the 7th (Friday),*the day of the bat tle of Panuville, and the correspondence was kept up du ring the following day and up to 11 o'clock on Sunday, as already published. In response to Gen. Grant's last letter, Gen. Lee appeared on the picket line of the Second Corps, Miles' division, with a letter addressed to General Meade, requesting a cessation of hostilities while he con sidered Gen. Grant’s terms of surrender. Gen. Meade re plied that he hud no authority to accede to the request, bat that he would wait tfro hours before making an at tack. In the meantime Gen. Grant sent word to GeneraT Mca-it u that he wol 1 lie up in half an hour, and the matter was turned over to him. A flag of truce proceed to Ap pomattox Court House shortly after noon, and at about 2 o’clock P. M., the two Generals met at the house of Mr. Wilmcr McLean. Gen. Iere was attended by Gen.
