IflE LONDON PUNCH AND ITS DINNERS. When the history of the rise and progress of Punch comes to be written, it will be found that the Weekly Dinner has been one of ite chief things which ccntribn » ted to its success. Almost from the foundation of that journal it hna been the habit of the contributors every Wednislay to d ue together. In the winter months the dinn-r Is usna'ly 1-eld in the front room or the first floor of Nd. It. Bcuverie street. White friars, the bu-d ness odiees of the proprietors, Messrs. Bradbury and Evan*. Somatimes these dinners are held at the Bedford Hotel Covrnt Garden. Daring the summer months, it is customary to have ten or twelve dinners at plrees in the nclf hbtrhood of London, Greenwich, Richmond. Blackwall, Ac. And once a year they attend the annu al dinner of the fl.m at vhlch con posit rs, reader!, prin'eis, maebinemen, clerks, etc., dine, lhis dinner is called the “Way Goose,” and Is often referred to in Pnnch. At the wsekly dinner, the contents of the forthcoming number of Punch are discussed. When the cloth is re moved. and dessert la laid on the table, the fist ques tion put by the editor is, “What shall the Cartoon be?” During the lifetimes of Jerrold and Thackeray, the discussions after dinner ran very high, owing to the constitutional antipathy existing between these two.-r Jerrold Leing the oldest, as well as the noisiest, gener ally came oil victorious. In these rows it required all the suavity of Mark Lemon (and he has a great deal of that quality) to calm the storm; his award always being final. The third edition of Wednesday’s Sun Is generally brought in to give the latest intelligence, so as to bring the Cartoon down to the latest date. On the Thursday morning following, the editor calls at the houses of the artists to see what is being done. On Friday night all copj is delivered and put into type, and at two o’clock on Saturday proofs are revised, the forms made tip, and. with the last movement of the engine, the whole of the type is placed under the press, which cannot be moved until the Monday morning, when the steam is again up. This prj^ution is taken ty prevent waggish tricks on th? pkrt of practical Joking composite rtf, • At these dinners n-n? but those connected with the staff proper are permitted to attend; the only occasional exe?otions, we believe, have been Sir Joseph Paxton. Mr. Layard. the present Foreign Under-Secretary, Chae Pickens, and Charks-Dickens, Jr. As an illustration of the benefit ftdslng from these meetings, we may mention that Jerrold alwisyjrused to say, “It is po ose any of us quarrelling, because next Wednesday must come round with Its dinner, when we will all have to shake hands again" By means of these meetings, the discussions arising on ail questions helped both caricaturist and wit to take a broad view of things, as well as enabled the editor to get his team to draw well together, and’ give a uniformity of tone to all the contributioas.— North British Review At a grand entertainment given in Pans by the Am bassadress of Austria, thirty ladies appeared as bats, and in that strange disguise executed a dance with great skill. The workmen at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, who were on a strike have gone to work again, on being asiured by Secretary Welles that their grievances would be promptly attended to. • GROCERS & PROVISION MERCHANTS, From Baltimore.
