TUESDAY KTENINCt, JAN. 17, 1871. i A Doggie in Church.—ln one of the upper counties of Virginia is a church whose worthy mini-tor is the Rev. Mr. . This gentlemao dislikes very much that his earnest discourses should be inter rupted. He has t special aversion to dogs coming into his church, and the appear ance of one of these animals always gird the excellent pastor tho fidgets until the intruder is driven out. On one occasion Mr. was deliver ing a very solemn discoursa to bis people, when a little terrier belonging to the Hon. Mr. X., one of the most prominent mem bers of his congregation, came into the church and went smslling round every- j Tho good preacher was evidently very much disconcerted, and began to balk in i his discourse. Suddenly, however, the dog came to a hole in tho* wall of the church, in which the scent of rat was quite fresh, and began to paw and scratch at It, and to squeal and yell at the top of his voice. This was too much for the good minister, and it knocked all of tbe ideas ont of his head. He paused in his preaching, and said in an imploring tone : "Will some one have the kindness to use his influence with that little crop-eared, bob-tailed cur,|and gel bim out of church?" Mr. X. immediately went up, and tried to call his dog away from the rat hole ; but so eager was the terrier, that this was no easy matter. The preacher waited for some moments longer, when ho cried out with some impatience : "Will some one be so kind as to get both the dog and his master out of tho church ?" This wa3 too much for Mr. X., who has a keen sense of the ludicrous. He could restrain himself no longer, but burst out laughirg, in which most of the congrega tion jiincd. Ho, however, now caught doggie hy the nape of his neck, and lifted him out of tho church, after which, order was restored, and the pastor proceeded with his sermon. The Charlestovvn (W. Va.) Courier says: Thero aro serious rumors of a silver mine excitement on Poca, in Putnam county, just above Raymond city. The party who claims to have discovered the precious stuff was in town a day or two ago, with his specimens, and has faith enough in hia ' luck" to believe that he has made a grand Btrike. Although we are satisfied that the Kanawha Valley is the world's Eldorado in the matter of mineral wealth, we will uot in this issuo adviso tho public to drop its business, and go to loaning land on Poca at a hundred dollars per foot. In brief, tho Poca miner hasn't "panned out" properly to the printer. Water Proof Boot Soles.—lf hot tar is applied to boot soles, it will make them .water-proof. Let it he as hot as the leath er will bear without injury, applied with a swab, and drying in the fire. The opera tion m.iy be repeated two or three times during tho winter, if necessary. It makes the surface of the leather quite hard, so that it wears longor, as well as keeps the water out. It is a good plan to provide brots for winter during summer, »ud pre pare the soles by tarring, as they will then become, before they are wanted to wear, al.nost as firm as horn, aud will wear twice as long as those unprepared. . «*. Chicago is in the sulks because a young lady has presumed to lecture it on marriage and divorce when she has tried neither. She is told that there are atiy number of people in Chicago who have tried both. A Berlin dispatch to tho London Times says that Prussia is endeavoring to effect a postponement of the London Conference, in view of the antagonism of Austria to the designs of Russia. Mrs. Stowe describes ono of her charac ters on entering college as simple, and con tented, and self-satisfied as a huckle-berry bush in a sweet-fern pasture. The printers' strike is at an end in Savannah, Ga., and they have returned to work at tho old prices, fifty cents per thousand ems. The Detroit Free Press speaks of a loom that weaves from 250 to 360 yards of cloth a day. It is the iuvontion of a Ver mont man named Abel. llu Galveston, Texas, an indignant ither, whoso daughter had married against is will, sent her for a wedding present a patent burial-csse. Young swell: "I say, boy, what do you do with your clothes wheu you've worn them out?" Boy—"Wears 'em home COI«MI-IlCIA_. Jiir-iiT 17.
