drcning £ tote journal __ « tv i*" '( 1 W\ It Oil 1871. Value of a Hoop fifclrt. A Plattsburg (New York) correspondent or Ihe New York Sun writes : An incident so romantic and unusual. and with a denouement so pleasing, occur red near here one day recently, t hat.i sena tho particulars to you. Lake Obamplain, on which this place U situated, is one of Ihe moat beautiful sheets of water proba bly iv America, and Cumberland Bay, where one of tho most brilliant naval et. gagements ofthe war of 1814 was toiigm, and won by Commodoro McDonougn, of the American Heel, against the Itritish under Commodore Downie, lur ntetWl oue of tl.e grainiest parks | \a\wiureaati ofthe young ladies and I nentlomen of this vicinity ou moonlight cvenin"s. Oue evening a short time since a yout°- lady and gentleman of this vil lage who had frequently been skating on the 'bay before, went out upon tbe bay, but believing in the old axiom that "two ia company," went to au unfrequented part, whore they could onjoy the skating aud each other's society unmolested. After skating for some timo near tho shore, the geutleman proposed that they should go further out where the ice was smoother, to which she consented, and they accordingly ventured out about two miles. Here they found the ice in a beautiful con dition, and the gentleman was proceeding to do the grapevine, forward and back ward roll, together with many other fancy figures only known to accomplished skaters, w"hen suddenly tho ice gave way beneath him, and in a moment he found himself struggling in the water and unable to ex tiicate hfmself, the ice breaking as fast as he attempted to raise himself on the edge. . . The young lady, true to her womanly instincts, began to scream at the top of her voice, but tho privacy they had sought had taken them beyond the hearing of all who could havo been of service to them. He besought her to go to the shore and en deavor to procure assistance; but she well knew he must perish before sho could get back, even if she found no difficulty in procuring assistance. Than an idea came into her "head, and she immediately put it in execution. Bhe first took off her jacket aud dress, and tying them together undertook to reach him with ono end ; but it was too short, as tho yielding ice warned her when she moved toward him and endeavored to throw him one end. What moro could she do? She hesitated a moment; then slip and yet it was too short. Meantime, the young man was rapidly becoming exhaust ed, and if she was to save him no time was to be lost. For a moment her hands dis appeared in the drapery about hor waist, and then something fell on the ice about ber feet—it was her hoop skirt. This was quickly sovered into half-a-dozen pieces, and added to the jacket, dress, and stockings, and, to her great delight, this made the line long enough to reach him. Bravely sho tugged at one end of it, while he clutched the other cud with a grip of a man who knew that that was all which stood between him and eternity. In a fow minutea sho landed him safely ou the solid ice, and then the red jacket and dress were wrapped about her as best they could be, and the two started for home, where they arrived without being noticed by any one. Few were the words spoken on the journey home ; but they must have been to the purpose, as the wedding suits are ordered, and beforo the ice shall disappear from our beautiful lake this spring they will be mar ried. Humorous. If a woman were to change her sex she would be a he-then. A little girl wanted her father to go to the loafer's and get a loaf of bread. The Cleveland Herald defines a snore to be "a nocturnal trumpet without a stop." "What have you to remark, madarne, about my singing?" said a gentleman to a lady. "Nothing, sir," replied the lady ; "it is not remarkable." At a lecture given in Frankfort, Indiana, not long since, tho ticket read: "Blessed aro the pure in heart for they shall see God. Admit one." "Misfortunes never como single, ] And so, like birds of a feather, The marriages and the deaths Are always printed together." " I have this afternoon been preaching to a congregation of asse. l :," said a conceited young parson. " Then that was the reason you called them 'beloved brethren,' " re plied a strong-minded lady. A statesman who had failed, wrote on his front door: "Payment suspended for thirty days." A neighbor reading this, said: "You have not dated the notice." "No," said he, "I do not intend to do so; it would run out if I did." The way to wealth is clearly pointed out in an old almanac of 1819, worthy of Poor Richard; the secret of traveling that road ia summed up thus: j "Pray take my advice if a fortune you'd get, I Pay what you owe and keep out of debt," A little Boston girl joyfully as<" ire(l mother, the other day that - fourjd out where they made hf jrlleß _ i . ue had Been a man in a shop r> lghj one of them for he was nailing oQ his ,J t foot w . oung Booster once aaid to a Hoosier *J»s: J "Sal, is there anybody courtin'yu now?" And Sal roplied: " Well, Bam, there is one fellow sorter courtin' and sorter not, but I rekon it is more sorter not than sorter." " I say, boy, is there anything to shoot around here?" inquired a sportsman of a boy he met. "Well," replied the boy, "nothing just about here, but our school master is just over the hill cuttiog birch rods, you might walk up and pop him over." Jones, says the Boston Journal, who wears his pocket book on the left, not 00l does not let his right hand know what h left hand doetb, but he goes further—h does not let his left hand do anything fo fear his right hand might know it. "Pray bestow your charity, young gen tleman, on a poor blind man," said a beg gar to a person passing by. "If you are blind, my good fellow, how did you know I was young?" "Oh, sir, I made amis take," said the beggar ; "pray give a trifle to a poor dumb man." "A friend of mine," said Erskine, "wag suffering from a continual wakoluln ai, and various methods were tried to bring him sleep. At last his physicians resorted to an expedient which succeeded admira- I rainut: A I'rovitUtncii )wii>rr i-.v. claim.--, with characteristic grace, "« year ago to-day was just such another day M yesterday was—only moro so."
