A lady was recently looking at the chromo of "Tho Birthplace of Whittle*, " wl.'ti .1 bystander remarked that it wai | painted by Thomas Hill. Moved by tho bad spiiit manifestly exUtlng between the Harvard and Yale class crews, a Boston paper remarks that both crews ate moro in need of the aid of piofessois of decorum and etiquette than of athletics. The St Albans (Vt.) Messenger says that there is in that town a herso whese upper lip bears a heavy moustache, fully threo inches in length, which parts in the n.iddle and gracefully curls out on either side in the moat approved fashion. Among the effects left by the late Samuel 11. Parsons, of Middletowu, is a costly dio oer service of china ware, of the mout elr gant workmanship, which formerly 13 --louged to Louis Phillippe, and which Mr. Parsons purchased in Paris during one of I his visits to that city. The Marion Commonwea'lh furnishes us with tlie following marriage notice, which j is somewhat stony : "Married—At Flint- Btone, by the Rev. Mr. Windstone, Mr. I Nehemiah Sandstone and Miss Wilhemina Whetstone, both of Limestone." Look out for brimstono nest. Mrs. Bella French, in her new Western Progrei, in giving an account of her visit to St. Paul and her lecture, says : "Seve- | ral of the first ladies of St. Paul met us at j the close ol" the lecture, kissed us, and bade us 'God Bpeed' in the good work. We al so received flattering congratulations from a number of gentlemen, who looked as if they wished to kiss rs, but were tc j bf sh ine fact of the baptism of Lo'.ta, the actre3s, in a New Orleans church, has al ready been mentioned. One of the papers says she bad on a black silk boddie and skirt, over which sho wore bretellos of light blue, in Christ Church, New Orleans, a week or so ago. She performed the Banm Sunday, in the evening, at the St. Charles Theatre, as Sam (with song and dance) iv tho Ticket-of-Leave Man. Mild winters in a Northern clime are not a new invention, as witnesseth this extract from tho diary ofthe A pestle Eliot, under date of IG4G : "This winter was one of ye mildest over we had, no snow all winter, long nor sharp weather, but they had long (hods at Conecttcot which was much spoyle to yr come in tho mea- j dows, we never had a bad day to go preach to the Indians all this winter, praised be the Lord." Erie, Pennsylvania, reports that one of its citizens, wishing some Brooklyn lawyer to tako testimony in a certain case, and not knowing any lawyer there, sent a tele gram ri questing tho telegraph manager to "ask reliable young lawyer if ho can take testimony, March 1;" and tho answer came back: "Reliable Young not known This is about as good a journalistic joke as wo have heard of for a long time: A copy of tha Fairfield (Towa) Ledger, by some mistake, was sent to the Bloomfield (Iowa) Democrat, with but one sid- printed. The Democrat printed its edition on the other side and sent it back—ladical Re publican on one side, and inteusely Demo cratic on the other. Virginia University has received the firßt instalment of the Duke of Argyle'a gilt to the university. The gift is to con sist of specimens of all the products and manufactures ot India. Foreigners Beem to take quite an interest in the institution. Bismarck not long ago presented to the school ol engineering a collection of scien tific drawings and models valued at It is said that a process has been in vented by which castor oil is made palat able, and can bo eaten on bread like honey. What advantages the youth of tho present day do enjoy, which were denied us. Twenty years ago a stroko of lightning would have been hailed with delight in preference to a dose of castor oil. A Missouri girl has not spoken to her, parents for live years. When she wants money or anything she writes it down on a slate and hands it to her father, and begins to load a revolver. He never failed to "coma down" yet; so they don't know really whether she would shoot or not. She is getting to be au old maid, because no young man dares to take tbe chances. There is trouble with the female jurors of Wyoming. They are too hard on meu. A man was brought before a female jury there charged with deserting a woman he had showed signs of wanting to marry. What did this jury do, after hearing the testimony, but briug in a verdict of murder in the first degree, aud recommend that the man bo hung ? Surely this is carrying hatred of men to far. Qoi.d in Washington.—About a week ago some school boys picked up some pieces of white quartz in the rear of the large colored school building on the corner of Ninth and Estreets, South Washington, containing gold in quantities sufficiently marked to give the chunks a value to jewelers as specimens, and there has'been a demand in consequence tbat has given quite a spur to "prospecting" by the juven iles of the neighborhood. The point where theso gold rocks are found is near an old rubbish heap in the rear of an out-house, and as the qttarlz-rocks do not belong to the soil of this part of the city it is proba ble that these "chunks" are specimens from gold mices iv other parts of the country thrown out here with rubbish by some for mer owner, or it may bo that they are atones hauled here for building purposes | (foundations or something of that kind) from Maryland or Virginia. If the latter is the case, they indicate richer gold veins in the localities from which they are taken than have yet boen discovered in the Poto mac gold mines. Some of these specimens that we havo in our possession would be considered rich specimens in any gold mine. The question now is from whence they come ?— Star. ■ .-._♦-. Governor Clayton Again Electbd TJ. 8. Senator.—On Tuesday last, the Legislature of Arkansas elected Governor Powell Clayton U. 8. senator by a majority of 20 votes. Tbe opposing candidates WU» McDonald, 16; Clark, 17; and White, 4. Leutenant Governor Johnson haviug re-igoed, the -Governmental chair will be died by the Hon. (). A. At first, a few crumbs of bread should be offered ; for some hours, the little odes will be in no hurry to oat; but, when they o commence, they should be supplied oustantly and abundantly with chopped ;g, shrods of meat and fat, curd, boiled co mixed with cress, lettuce, aud tho ;reon of ouions; moltod mutton-suet loured over barley-meal, and cut up •Inn cold, as also bullock's liver boiled ud minced, are excellent things. Caraway-se 1, as a tonic, are beneficial, if added to plenty of barley,'boiled potatoes, chopped vegetables and refuse meat. At this time the turkeys, naturally enough, begin to be troublesome and voracious ; they have to grow from the size of a lark to twelve or fourtcon pounds, in eight or nine months. One great merit in old jirds is, that in situations where nuts, acorns, and mast are to be had, they will cad off their brood to thero, aud all of them will abstain, comparatively, from ;avaging other crops. A Miser's Suicide.—Mr. Ditmas Dur yea, one of the most wealthy residents of Flatbush, New York, committed suicide on Monday by taking laudanum. The deceased was fiity-fivo years of age, and had buried his wife about six weeks ago. He had ams-ssed about $200,000 by the increrso in tbe value of real estate. His wife had about $7,000 in her own right, and before her death willed it to some of her relatives. This set medio prey upon his mind, and as he was subject to nervous attacks he began drinkiug and eating opium. He closed his house about two weeks since aud went to board with a neighbor. He boasted that he could take nearly half a glass of laudanum without injury.
