lityitblican Mast Meeting laiU Night* \ s
lAst night tho Hppublicans'of Manchester j h
inwnsliip assemblwl at the colored Societies' _
Hall, for ihe pnri>ose of completing the
election of delegates to represent that town- j
ship in the Chester Nominating Convention.
The night before, Kiclinrd Waldridge, a
Thomas .Mann, antl W. T. Martin had
been chosen as delegates, to whom was
added, last night, the name of William L. :
Holt. These four will constitute tlie Man
chester township delegation.
After the election of delegates, the meet- J
ing determined to instruct the delegates as -
to whom they should support as the candi
dates for the various oftiees to be filled at ,
the next election. t
By a large and impressive majority vote, J
the Hon. H. T. Edwards and Hon. Sam'l ]
F. Maddox were pronounced the choice of i
that township, to be elected as members of '
the House of lielegates.
Messrs. Ed waitls and Maddoz represented
Chesterfield in the last legislature, and alt
though strong efforts were made to induce
the party to believe they had proven ifieffi- ,
cient, they made but little impression upon '
the friends of these gentlemen. , . '
The records of the legislature deny such ,
assertions more impressively than could the ,
friends of cither the gentlemen.
Kesolutions expressive of confidence in
Hon. Charles H. Porter, Messrs. Edwards
and Maddox were unanimously adopted. [
We will publish these resolutions with \
pleasure when furnished us. I
We beg the Republicans of Chesterfield
and elsewhere to exclude positirehy from
their meetings all persons who are un
friendly to them. The hall contained last
night as many, or more, Democrats than ]
Republicans, who, although frequently re- .
quested to remain quiet, lelt nothing un- I
done to create confusiion and discord.
Politeness is one of our weaknesses, but .
we sec no want of it in excluding persons I
from these meetings who are unfriendly
and disposed to disturb their proceedings. \
Religious. —Preaching at the Baptist
church at 11 A. M. and 8 P. M.
Methodist Episcopal church —the quarter- .
ly iiiec.ing will be held. Rev, l>eroy M.
I.cc will preach morning and night.
At the Meade Memorial church, the sac
rament of the Lord's Supper will be'ad
ministered at the close of the morning ser
vices.
Meeting at all other churches, as wo have
not been informed of any changes,
Marriage Licenses. —There were fifteen
marriage licenses issued by the clerk of the
county court during the month of August
-—nine whites and suvep colored.
Pii.-Nic. —Providence Sabbath school will
have a pic-nic next Wednesday near their
church in Chesterfield county.
The County Court. —This court was in
session yesterday. Nothing of importance
was done. Additional security was given
by the township collector.
A Story About f.en. Cass.
Col. Forney writes:
John Guy bore a striking resemblance to
Geo. Lewis Cass, and while he was pro
■ prietor of the National Hotel, in Washing
ton, the Michigan Senator was among his
favored guests. Guy dressed like Cass,
and although not as portly, his face, includ
ing the wart, was sti-angely similar. One
i lay a Western friend of the house came in
after a long ride, dusty and tired, and Walk
ing up to the oilice encountered Gen. Cass,
who was quietly standing there. Mistaking
him for ( Juy, he slapped him on the shoulder
and exclaimed: 'Well, old fellow, here 1
am; the last time I hung my hat up in
your shanty one of your clerks sent me to
the fourth story; but now that I have got
hold of you, 1 insist upon a lower room."
The General, a most dignified personage,
taken aback by this startling salute, coldly
replied: "You have comnutcd a mistake,
sir. lam not Mr. Guy, I am Gen. Cass,
of Michigan," and angrily turned away.
The Western man was shocked at the un
conscious outrage he had committed; but
before he had recovered from his mortifica
tion, Gen. Cass, who had passed around
the office, confronted him again, when, a
second time mistaken him for Guy, he faced
him and said : "Here you are at last. I
have just made a devil of a mistake; I met
old Cuss and took him for you, and I am
afraid the Michigander has gone off mad."
What (itn. Cass would have said may well
be imagined, if the real Guy had not
appeared antl rescued the innocent offender
from the twice assailed and twice angered
statesman.

The "PAIN KILLER" may justly be styled
the great medicine of the world ; for there is no
region of the globe into whicli it has not found
IU way, and been largely used and highly prised j
Moreover, there is no clime to which It has not ]
proved to be well adapted for the cure of a con ]
siderable variety of diseases. It is a speedy and ]
*a!_ remedy for burns scalds, cuts, bruises, ]
wounds and various other injuries, as well as for ,
dysentery, diarrhoea and bowel complaints gene
rally. It is admirably suited for every race of j
men on the face of the globe.
It is a very significant tact, that notwithstand- j
ing tbe long period of years that the "PAIN
KILLER" has been before the world, ii has
never lost one whit of its popularity, but, on the
contrary, the call for it has steadily Increased
from its first discovery, and at no previous time
has the demand for it been so great, or the quan
tity made been so large, as it is to-day.
Another significant fact is, that nowhere has
the "PAINKILLER" ever been in higher re
pute, or been more generally used hy families
and individuals, than it ha* been here at home,
where it was first discovered and introduced.
That the "PAIN KILLER" will continue to
be, what we have styled it, the urkat medicine
